Siding with mages, Hawke must realize that he/she will have to assume templar responsibilities in the future, sort of. Or is there anything to do? Not for the sake of Meridith, but for the sake of normal people.
Why is that? Of course, it depends on the role play you used and the reasoning behind siding with the mages in the first place. If you thought that Meredith had just gone too far and there were some innocent mages, then I don't really see how your statement is true. If you yourself are a mage, then you of course know that not all mages, not even all of the ones in Kirkwall have succumbed to demons. If on the other hand, you are siding with mages specifically for personal relationship reasons (ie sister Bethany, romance Merrill or Anders), I can see how this would be a logical line of thought.
If you sided with the templars, we can just assume that you killed most of the offending mages during the assault on the Gallows, so there is really nothing you have to do with them.
Unfortunately for Kirkwall and its non-mage citizens, the veil is extremely thin there, which was not at all helped by the initial Tivinter occupation of the place, nor was it made any better by havng a circle of magi housed there, or the proximity of the Vimmark mountains and the Grey Warden prison holding Corypheus (as shown in Legacy). Any lingering mage problems there will either persist or get worse because Kirkwall itself, the physical area, is part of the problem.
As far as doing anything after the big fight, I'm not sure. It's not really stated how long you remain in Kirkwall after it's all over. If you sided wtih the templars you are made the Viscount, but you don't have that option as a mage PC. Either way, we do know that we leave at some point. Who the hell knows what we do after that.
I have a head RP where I go south into Ferelden to take up King Alistair's offer on joining with him, but that's just me.

I would also encourage all mages to head for Tevinter, before the real war / after they have been freed from the circle.
Tevinter doesn't really like foreigner mages, but I don't really think they will rationaly deny couple of thousands standing at their doors. Would be the best opportunity to defeat the qunari, and all they have to do to get the power is to welcome the mages with more freedom, soft beds and hot food.
Also someone really has to continue/restart Avernus reasearch. It would make mages basically immune to demon possession, they would all be "grey wardens" though. But that's nice, they all could fight the blight more effectively, when it comes.
But all and all - Strengthen Tevinter empire with big ranks of new mages from broken circles - defeat the qunari - make the black devine rule supreme in the other countries. Since if people don't want to live equal with mages, they are going to live under the mages.

Logic check: Avernus' research only works on currently existing Grey Wardens. It doesn't turn people into Grey Wardens.
So then it logically stands that first you'd have to poison all the mages by forcing them to drink darkspawn blood, which kills most people immediately. Then you could activate Avernus' secret formula to make the rest more rsistant to possession. Of course, by then most mages would be dead and a templar purge would probably ensue.

Hmm, right ok. I forgot that so many people die from the joining ritual. Oh well, will have to do without then.
