Artistic integrity my ass, all game developers care about is money. As they should be, as its a business, not an art. So, they thinking what decision will bring them more money, and will act accordingly in April.

You sad sad man :/ Video game is an art, and whatever you think ME3 writers consider it that way. I think that's why they're so unreasonnable on this matter. Wounded artistic pride.

Which writers? ;)

There’s been a lot of discussion and debate about the conclusion of Mass Effect 3, so I thought I’d share my perspective with you here. I’ll avoid outright spoilers, but I’d still recommend finishing the game and experiencing it for yourself before reading this.

For the last eight years, Mass Effect has been a labor of love for our team; love for the characters we’ve created, for the medium of video games, and for the fans that have supported us. For us and for you, Mass Effect 3 had to live up to a lot of expectations, not only for a great gaming experience, but for a resolution to the countless storylines and decisions you’ve made as a player since the journey began in 2007. So we designed Mass Effect 3 to be a series of endings to key plots and storylines, each culminating in scenes that show you the consequences of your actions. You then carry the knowledge of these consequences with you as you complete the final moments of your journey.

We always intended that the scale of the conflict and the underlying theme of sacrifice would lead to a bittersweet ending—to do otherwise would betray the agonizing decisions Shepard had to make along the way. Still, we wanted to give players the chance to experience an inspiring and uplifting ending; in a story where you face a hopeless struggle for basic survival, we see the final moments and imagery as offering victory and hope in the context of sacrifice and reflection.

We've had some incredibly positive reactions to Mass Effect 3, from the New York Times declaring it “a gripping, coherent triumph”, to Penny Arcade calling it “an amazing accomplishment”, to emails and tweets from players who have given us the most profound words of appreciation we've ever received.

But we also recognize that some of our most passionate fans needed more closure, more answers, and more time to say goodbye to their stories—and these comments are equally valid. Player feedback such as this has always been an essential ingredient in the development of the series.

I am extremely proud of what this team has accomplished, from the first art concepts for the Mass Effect universe to the final moments of Mass Effect 3. But we didn't do it on our own. Over the course of the series, Mass Effect has been a shared experience between the development team and our fans—not just a shared experience in playing the games, but in designing and developing them. An outpouring of love for Garrus and Tali led to their inclusion as love interests in Mass Effect 2. A request for deeper RPG systems led to key design changes in Mass Effect 3. Your feedback has always mattered. Mass Effect is a collaboration between developers and players, and we continue to listen.

So where do we go from here? Throughout the next year, we will support Mass Effect 3 by working on new content. And we’ll keep listening, because your insights and constructive feedback will help determine what that content should be. This is not the last you’ll hear of Commander Shepard.

We look forward to your continued support and involvement as we work together to shape the remaining experiences in the story of the Mass Effect trilogy.

Thanks for taking this journey with us.

Casey Hudson

Well, true, but is it really any less valid? I mean, it's been 7 months and we haven't seen hide nor hair of the little weasel.

My guess is he hasn't defended his vision because he doesn't have to nor would it probably be productive if he did. If people liked the ending or the creative process as a whole, then they don't need to hear anything. If you didn't like the ending, then having Casey explain to you their rationale probably wouldn't change your mind at all. I can't imagine anybody saying "oh - that's why they did it." and suddenly have their minds changed. It'd be nice if it did, but odds are it won't. In regards to "defending the vision.", Casey posted that he was very proud of his work and he should be. Thank you, to Casey Hudson and the entire ME team for their work.

Actually, that's not true.  If he came forward and fully explained the reasons why things turned out how they did, I might not LIKE the ending any better, but I would've gained perspective from and respect for the creative team.  Even if I didn't think the reasons he gave were enough to justify what happened, I'd still be able to understand a little better.

It's kind of like what happens when I get into a fight with a friend.  Let's say she said something that really hurt my feelings, and I get really mad at her and refuse to talk to her for a while.  Now, if she comes along and says, "sorry for hurting your feelings, but I was having a horrible day and needed someone to take it out on," that doesn't mean it was right to insult me, but I've had bad days before, so I understand.

This is really all he has to do:

"I'm sorry the fans didn't enjoy [X].  The team and I were trying to accomplish [Y], and we were confident that we'd be successful.  Clearly we weren't, and we'll try harder next time.  Nonetheless, I'm really proud of how far we've come together, and I'm not ashamed of the creative choices I've made."

The fact that neither Casey nor Mac has been seen at all (apart from 1 very carefully worded video) since this whole thing began speaks volumes about how they really view their own work.

If they truly believed in it they would have defended themselves by now...but they won't....because they can't.

Maybe it's attitudes like this. I'm not saying his work shouldn't be criticized, but there's no point in him defending it with when so many people focus on defimation rather than his work.

Really!? Because the recent article I read on ME4 seems to say otherwise.

Well, how can I argue with that?      Not all gamers are certainly as reasonable as you are, of course and I'm sure he'd still get plenty of angry and irrational feedback, but you can't win them all, right?   :)   Obviously, as the ending shows, you certainly can't please everybody.     But, I'm sure at some point (I'm hopeful anyway), that Casey and hopefully more of the Bioware/EA staff will come out to explain their creative thought process that led to this.    I don't have any problem with them coming forward to state where they were coming from, but what I would have a problem with this is apologizing.    Obviously, they don't feel they need to and I don't think they should apologize - even if there is some backlash among the fans.   The trilogy should stand on its own awesome and creative merits.    That statement is pretty good that you wrote - although you could amend it to "some fans" - as many of them didn't have any issue with the ending.   But, the big thing is that they shouldn't be ashamed of any creative choices they have made as a team and still be proud of the product that they've delivered.

I agree with most of what you said, except the bolded part.

See, even if you technically did nothing wrong, it's still right to apologize if somebody's upset because of you.  You can still respect other people's feelings without turning into a backpedaling pushover, and you'll be a stronger person for it.

Seriosuly, there's really no downside in being considerate of others. :)

Casey did defend his vision. In fact, he wrote a song about it called "Forgot about Casey." Here's an excerpt:

[Casey Hudson]
Now you wanna run around and talk about guns
Like I ain't got none
What you think I sold 'em all
Cause I stay well off
Now all I get is hate mail all day sayin Casey fell off
What cause I been in the lab wit a pen and a pad
Tryna get this damn label off
I ain't havin that
This is the millenium of Aftermath
Ain't gonna be nothin after that
So give me one more Greatest Hits plaque and forget ME3
You can have it back
So where's all the mad directors at
It's like a jungle in this habitat
But all you savage cats
Knew that I was strapped wit gats
When you were cuddled wit cabbage patch

[chorus] x2 [Mac Walters]

Nowadays everybody wants to talk like they got something to say
But nothin comes out when they move they lips
Just a buncha gibberish
And BSNers act like they forgot about Casey
