I recently bought Mass Effect 1 on my laptop for 5 euro on origin and it is downloaded and installed. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742 so I figured a 4 year old game would work on the laptop which is a few months old. When I click play on the Mass Effect Launcher nothing else happen si I am wondering is it just not compatible, I am fairly sure it is but I am not a pc expert.
Processor= intel core i3-380M
Graphics- Intel HD Graphics (all i know about it)
RAM = 4GB
Sound= Realtek Speakers
Mass Effect 1 won' go past Launcher on my Laptop

Intel doesn't know how to make a 3D graphics card. You are out of luck.

are you sure, isnt the configuration utility not meant to tell you if its is not compatible

The game was designed to run with a REAL video graphics card from a real 3D gaming company. That doesn't include Intel, so the result isn't "running", it's a casual stroll, at best. The Intel chips aren't designed for the strain of game play, and laptops with such poor graphics also have poor thermal protection. The chipset will accumulate damage over time, and instead of lasting 2-3 years before being so outdated it has to be junked, the laptop will begin having all kinds of artifacts, anomalies, and failures in half that time.

Hi all,
My issue is a little bit different. I was able to play ME1 on my old OS (Win XP) but recently updated to Win 7 and can't seem to get the game to work. Had big issues at the outset and couldn't even install the game (installer would automatically cancel after entering the product key). After reading through tonnes of forums, I found out that the DVD version I have won't install on Win 7 because the WIn Zip installer corrupts the data files and thus cannot unpack them properly. I used a workaround and unpacked the files into a folder on my hard drive manually (one by one). This fixed the installation problem...
THE ISSUE I'M HAVING NOW:
After using the launcher file though, the game starts up correctly and shows the BIOWARE and DEMIURG game developers logos. Then when I press the Enter or click to launch the game itself, after a few seconds it freezes up and Windows kicks me out of the application informing me of the APP CRASH. This is the error:

I tried different workarounds, including opening the Launcher.exe file from the Binaries folder instead of the config console, running the file as ADMIN in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2, SP3 and Vista SP1, SP2 as well as Windows 7 as a last resort. That didn't work either.
I disabled UAC as I've heard this causes the issue in certain cases but in my case it didn't make any difference. I also did a clean boot (switched off all Microsoft services and other applications/processes that might interfere). Firewall and antivirus were disabled too.
Also tried updating the game with the latest patch but still got no joy.
Also tried changing the registry keys as per suggestion on one of the forums:
1) in /program files/Mass Effect/Binaries locate the OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll files
2) Rename OpenAL32.dll to OpenAL32.bak
3) Rename wrap_oal.dll to OpenAL32.dll
4) Launch as Admin by using the MassEffect.exe
This didn't work either. I've read that EA deny users any help on this issue, stating the game is not meant for Windows 7. Whilst, I agree that this was designed a long time before official premiere of Windows 7, I disagree with the fact that it shouldn't run on Windows 7. Actually, I've read some people have been able to launch it on their Windows 7 OS. The problem is, in most cases they they were users of the Steam edition of the game and not the DVD version like myself.
I've heard that some were able to resolve the problem by installing the Bring Down the Sky DLC. I couldn't try this fix as I need to register my game first. When I tried to do that through the EA website, it wouldn't give me an option to register. I bought the original game, not a pirated version and yet I can't seem to get it fully up and running on my Windows 7 x32. It's really frustrating.
I still think they should come up with some sort of workaround to get this issue sorted out for their loyal users. That's why I decided to write on this forum as I've virtually run out of all my options.
I would appreciate any suggestions or further workarounds from you:-)

As per a hundred previous people who wrote here and all wanted to believe their problem was a unique one, you needed to patch the game prior to attempting to run it.

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply. I will try that. Also just got an activation code for the DLC (Bring the Sky Down) from EA, so I will try both solutions :-) Hope that helps. If not, I'll keep on trying until this has been sorted out...
