The Bioware Art defence program... What is art, if no one buy it? would you still go to work every day and look at it in your office, you wouldnt get payed, but it would still be ART right?? you think that would satisfy EA?? Go tell them about your art..

Also Geoff, is it hard to do a fair and thorough review of a game like Mass Effect 3? I mean, there's illiterately hundred plus hours of gaming if you went through them all in one sitting, and if you did all the paths and stories, you would be sitting for many hundreds of hours. Reviewing a game like Mass Effect 3 would require intimate knowledge of all three games in my opinion.

Can you do a fair review of such a complex game as a busy journalist who probably have several games to review over a limited amount of time? How did you solve this at gametrailers when you chose a reviewer?

I just want to say, when you jump down the throat of a person who doesn't have to talk to you, it usually bodes poorly of getting to speak to people again. You can ask people about the numerous legitimate grievances without sounding angry.

I hope you're not refering to me here, if so I'm sorry that my concerns/questions came across as anger.

Is having passionate fans a positive thing? Is including elements like morals and empathy in games a positive or negative? And, playing off the emotions that you put on this highly interactive medium that is a game like this, is it cheap to stab deep with the writing quill to inflict the most emotional response from the players who've invested themselves the deepest emotionally into the game? And then ultimately, claiming artistic freedom in creating a rigid and unyielding ending when the predictable uproar from the players spills over into PR and gaming news. Art versus entitlement is a sidetrack of the debate I think, the debate is how you can touch and upset players with maximum effect. And I think Bioware has proven both extremes in this case.

These questions must be interesting to ask yourself as a gaming journalists. It touches upon the potential future of gaming, and what I would imagine is potential pitfall for a gaming studio that decides to venture into -- What I would almost consider a social experiment with an increasingly passionate fan base as they delivered content to the trilogy.

Actually, even more importantly for me as a gamer is the potential that we can learn something from this in the industry instead of rewriting a game. Because I honestly feel that I've wasted a lot of time playing this wonderful game for many years on and off, just by ten minutes of extremely controversial techniques of writing to inflict the most emotional responce from me.

Ummm....  what she/he said:whistle:

I don't understand the above posting, Singu.

Is producing a game that has the capacity to be deeply emotionally affecting a bad thing? Do you think that BW deliberately provoked this uproar?

I don't know if he's here anymore, or whether or not he can answer my question, but here is it anyways:

Why on Earth is the Normandy fleeing from the battle? It's a violation of all the characters aboard her. No teammate would leave the battle. EVER. They would win or die trying. Also, how did Joker beam the squadmates up?

Nono, I'm all for emotional gameplay. It's a refreshing break from conflict and violence - which I also like when it's motivated by those same emotional responces.

I think BW wrote the ending to create an emotional responce for sure. I strongly doubt they accidentally invoked it in the belief that it would be something else for the audience(victorious and uplifting for example, I don't buy that one for a second). However, what I'm sure of is that they never anticipated such an uproar. If I was an artist I can easily see the value of shocking, it's seducing to your talents as an artist to be able to cause a wide feeling of loss and shock. But it can be too much when you don't balance it out to the amount of time and energy your audience had in getting to the level of emotional involvement. This is what I think happened with the Mass Effect 3 ending, and that's what I hope can be brought away from this as a lesson.

That is certainly interesting app.

And I got few questions:
1)Did they mention anything about removal of War Assets - like due to bugs or not enough time? (Cerberus fleet and like)
2)Is it possible to get subtitles? (Could help with understanding)

Anyway one last thing at others: Stop seriously misquoting Casey Hudson about Boss battle. Missing part is: "And nothing we did to work it in the themes really answered the fact that ultimately it just felt like there was an end boss for the sake of having end boss"
Note: Transcribed by me. A mistake might have creeped in, but I am sure it won't change meaning...

Mr. Keighley,

Could we get your personal opinion on the ending? Not the opinion of a journalist or producer, your opinion as a player of mass effect. You say that you hope they won't completely change the ending. What would you be happy with? What do you hope to see changed?

Hi Geoff.  Thanks for coming on.  I have a few questions.

Can you get Mac Walters to come talk to us?  If not, can you explain why Mr. Walters made these comments one week prior to release, when the actual game does not begin to reflect the promises made therein?

At what point did the team decide to essentially scrap the choices from the original two games?  Was this decision made due to time and budget constraints, technological impossibility, or pure laziness?

Why does the team continue to assert that our displeasure with the ending is a result of its bleak nature, when in reality we hate it because it is fraught with plot holes, flawed logic, and outright stupidity?

Why is BioWare taking such an aggressive and pretentious attitude towards its customers?

How much control would you say EA has over BioWare?

Is there anyone else at BioWare who has the guts to speak with us?

Thanks!

Hello Geoff,

I don't really have a question (so don't feel obligated to respond). I just wanted to say that I thought the Final Hours app was very interesting and definitely worth a purchase. I actually thought the pre-ME1 section was the most interesting part. It is fascinating seeing how such a detailed world like ME's is created. I was especially surprised to learn that the Reapers weren't always intended to be the main threat.

Unfortunately, the latter sections regarding ME3 were ruined and tainted for me by these forums. My fault I guess for reading those topics. Its regrettable that something so neat as you app has to be corrupted by all this "ending" business.

Anyway, I just wanted to express my gratitude and enjoyment of the app in question. I never checked out the Portal 2 app, but based on this its probably worth a look. I also look for any further Final Hours apps you might produce. Thanks for the behind the scenes look.

Geoff, just so you know, I'm sure answering all of the questions in forum format is probably pretty annoying. Next time you might just want to post a link to a Reddit AMA, so that the fans could rank the questions so you wouldn't get repeats and would only have to answer the higher ranked questions. Also, the answers would be right below the questions, making it easier for people to read them, and others could comment on the answers to expand on them.

As for questions, while I haven't tried the app (don't have an iPad and I heard the transfer to PC wasn't perfect) I would like to know if you noticed any apprehension among the developers about the future fan reaction to the game and especially the ending. Also, if they let you play/finish the final build of ME3, did they ask for your personal opinion about the game and the ending? Were you able to notice if the general consensus of the team (not only the team leads) was that the game met their expectations and was ready to ship? And one final question: Did you notice the presence or any noticeable outside pressure of EA in the Bioware studio in the final hours of development?

If you answer any of my questions, or even just read my post, I want to thank you for your time. I'm sorry if you felt any hostility directed to you, but I'm sure you can understand that many of the Mass Effect fans felt betrayed by the horrible ending of ME3. Plus, even if you like the ending, you have to realize there are many glaring plot holes and inconsistencies along with none of our questions being answered while many new questions are raised in the final minutes of a 120 hour plus series.

Btw, for anyone that may have a below average IQ or just not be aware of the existence of the Final Hours App, your topic title could be pretty misleading. It could possibly be inferred that you were the author of the ending of Mass Effect 3, which may have lead to some of the hostility earlier in the thread. :)

Was Jack planed as real companion? Or since beginning she was supposed to be non recruitable? Can you say anything about Jack?

^^ This.  Certainly would like to know more on Jack's status in the game, or any planned additional material that might be planned for her in regards to future DLC.

I have a question. 'FINAL HOURS' offers a deleted scene showing the DEATH of Shepard's squad-mates in the final charge. It then presents the 'final' version of the scene, which shows the BODIES of his squadmates. I did not see this in the final cut of the game.... do you know what happened? Why was its changed?

I think you only see their bodies if you have a low EMS, otherwise they're alive, you just can't see them for some reason.

This thread was a good read and it was nice to hear an honest opinion from someone who had a look at the creative process.

Geoff, did you get the sense that the team had an idea that the content of the endings (StarChild, Shep ALWAYS dies, destruction of civilization) would disappoint such a large portion of the fanbase? Do you think anyone saw this coming?

Thanks!

For number 1, I think the Cerberus Fleet is probably an asset from the cut Omega Missions.

Is Geoff actually going to show up again, or has he vanished into the nether that is the Internet?

Either that or he's hunkering down in a bunker, since he just gave people more ammunition to use against Bioware.

He jumped ship, and did an AMA at /r/masseffect http://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/reo71/i_am_geoff_keighley_author_of_the_final_hours_of/

But maybe he will be back :)

I wonder why BW let us in despair and haven't informed us about the end of the game logics. They don't need to announce DLC and it's contents, just a little hint would be much appreciated. Why so secret? Something like "Yes, Shepard was there, it wasn't a dream and he survived the Citadel explosion. Squadmates left him unconscious because of Joker was running out of fuel." Or "Yes, Shepard never was on the Citadel and Crucible never fired, it was all just a dream and later Reapers was destroyed...somehow."

Might be. (Was fun digging through files for it and MassEffectCore) Just curious if he heard something about them.
