 Hi everyone -

This is Geoff Keighley, the author of The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3.  I thought I'd stop by the forum to answer any questions you have about the app and the story, which is now out for iPad and also PC/Mac. (You can see more details at http://www.me3finalhours.com).

I'd love to hear what you think of the story!  I'll try to respond to as many of you as possible.

Geoff

Hey Geoff. First of all, thanks for the great app. It was very interesting. However, I wish it was optimized for PC better, but I understand that it wasn't really made for PC use! I also wanted to say I have a lot of respect for how you handled that Fox news interview about Mass Effect a while ago. Also, say hi to Mega64 for me if you see them around at some point again lol.

Anyway, did you think the cameos from previous characters was enough? Did you want to see more out of them? For example, I was hoping (and honestly, expecting) to see them in the final battle, which unfortunately did not happen. On that point, did you think the final battle showed enough? Do you have any insight into why the final battles were so limited in what they showed?

Why did the ME3 team abandon its process of peer review for the ending?

Why are so many people asking him specific questions about the game and Bioware itself? Do you not know that he doesn't work for Bioware? All he did was report the story for the app.

Oh, and one more thing for everyone in the thread.......It has already been confirmed that Mac Walters wrote the ending, so you can stop asking!

@Geoff:
The only thing that confuses me is that you actually gave info about the upcoming content that Bioware is working on and went on to say that it is FREE. That would be a major slip since Bioware wasn't planning on telling us anything until April. My only question for you is: Did they allow you to say that or did you not know we haven't been told that officially??

He was talking about an update for his 'Final Hours' app, not for ME3.

Maybe this is sort of off topic, but no topic was really established.

Typically the rabid part of any fanbase behaves somewhat poorly from an outsider's point of view. Many feel some gaming journalists acted even more poorly given their position as many were quite eager to shed objectivity to render a harsh and negative opinion on the retake petitioners.

As a gaming journalist what's your view on what appears to many to be a growing rift between gaming journalism and gamers?

@Geoff: The flowchart on chapter 7, was that the final flowchart (aka, the flowchart Bioware used while the game was about to go gold or had gone gold) or an earlier flowchart? Might make an difference what to expect in the future...

I would like to thank Geoff for his great app, it has certainly added an additional level of interest to the whole ending saga and has answered a few questions that I had after seeing the ending. Keep up the good work.

I was hesitant to purchase the app, but I am glad I did. I would buy something like that for a lot of my favorite games.

John385 - Thanks for reading. Yes, the plan is to write a new chapter that addresses the fan feedback and how BioWare is responding. It would be a free update. The Portal story was updated with a new chapter on the DLC for free.

So there will be an ending DLC (well some sort or ending related content.) And it will be free?

Btw, I'd like to apologise for the troll accusations. Understand that the BSN is in a very depressed state right now... more than usual :-)

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

Given the large reaction and impact, both positive and negative, will you be doing a 'The even more final hours of Mass Effect 3?' In which you comment on how Bioware reacted to the ending reaction of their fans, the game press who believed fans were whining and annoying, and how they were unwittingly caught in the middle of this huge debate whilst only trying to make a game - showing us where they go from there with DLC.

Because honestly I'd love that - far more intrested in what is actually going on inside BioWare at the moment than what actually happens to the franchise.

My mistake. I thought he was responding to the person before him that asked about the DLC. I wish he would quote people so we know what comment he is responding to without having to search their name down.

Are you serious?  My biggest problem with the game is that you didn't get to meet many new people because it was just a non-stop series of cameos.

Do you think Casey and the team really want to work on building new universes or continuing the Mass Effect franchise?

In the section of the app "The Darkest Hours", you first quote a GameSpot user on the leaked endings:

Apparently your choices in the past games don't matter in ME3 if this script is authentic. The writers came up with one plot line and then used a bunch of excuses to explain how a given decision you could have made didn't really change anything.

You then go on to give Bioware's internal response to the leak:

The entire team was devestated, especially Waters and his team of eight writers. The fans weren't giving BIoWare the benefit of the doubt; no, they took the hacked story synopsis as the real script. "The reaction from everyone online was, "These writers are idiots, this is the worst thing I have ever read,' remembers Hudson. The truth, however, wasn't what it appeared to be. The "script" was a series of jumbled-up dialogue lines and short-level descriptions for internal use. "It would be like saying the script for Star Wars is, "Farm boy meets up with robots who have a message, and the three of them go off and meet the wizard on the moutain," says Hudson.

I am looking at a copy of the the spoiler script released in November, and I must say the ending here is strikingly similar to the in-game one. Since you were the one who spoke to Mr. Hudson, I was wondering if you can clarify his remark, because I am not sure if I understand his comparison here. Without any sarcasm at all, am I just missing something?

Guys he probably wont be able to answer everyone when he comes back, so its better to just wait for him and ask your question AFTER he returns.

That's reasonable, too. People did mention that it seemed like every mission an old character basically popped up. Personally, I thought it was fun to see my old buddies again, but wanted something more substantial out of it besides, "Hey I'm here! Yeah, I'll help you! Ok, bye!".

@ tobito113 Love it!

@ Geoff Keighley Thank you for ME3. It was probably the best game I've ever played (Until the end)
My big question (because I know most people are going to ask the obvious ones) is:
Do the people at Bioware understand why a lot of the fans hate the ending?
I don't feel like you guys are going to help it out if you don't understand what's wrong with it.

Geoff Keighley doesn't work for Bioware.  He wasn't involved in making the game.  What he WAS involved in is the Final Hours app., which details what went down in the office during the development process.  He was there as a journalist.

Geoff Keighley didn't make ME3. He's a gaming journalist.

Oh come on guys, do you really think that his guy can say something about the new DLC? or about the endings? and even more, for free? and if he knows, that bioware will allow him to talk about it?

Seriusly.. This really have no sense, just wait until Bioware says something :/ , this is just marketing xD
