The lack of both and more, Framing the question as a "One or the Other" Dichotomy is misleading.

@Nostradamoose:

It might have been squandered potential, but the squadmates living or dying, and the crew and even Shepard is still a fa better way to show the consequences of our actions as the conclusion to a game built around choice.

They're the characters we actually care about, and encouraging us to play better, and do more to get them through it is far more satisfying than knowing it all goes ****** up no matter what you do.

Closure, a lack of plot holes and making sense is a basic requirement of any story, fixing it should be a given.

Mass a effect isn't just any story though, it does specific things, has specific themes and precedents that also need to be present, that the game was sold to us with the promise they WOULD be present, and the failure to deliver the variety and satisfaction, as well as an ending consistent with the tone of the rest of the series and game itself, is equally as important.

Just providing closure wont prevent the majority of fans ditching Bioware, or at least becoming disillusioned with them as a game developer.

If they're going to alter the ending anyway, then they should go the whole hog and do a thorough job of it, and try and recapture the glory of the last to games endings. And that needs player input and a feeling of accomplishment to be included, as well as the basics of 'making sense'.

Closure, mostly. However, at least having the OPTION for a happy ending would be preferable.

 Mostly closure.

The fact there is no option  for a happy ending bothers me, just as much as there's no option for any other ending besides the one we get (with 3 flavors).

Destruction of the relays got me the most.

I expected Shepard to die, but the destruction of the galactic community was not something I expected.

Here is an example of a good closure ending from a fan who romanced Tali

Hmmm. I think lack of closure and lack of a happy ending both are things that bother me, but really they're symptomatic of a much larger problem:

nowhere near enough resources and dev time was spent making the conclusion. It's full of strange and bizarre inconsistencies, logical problems, goofy hollywood tactics, and giant space fleas from nowhere (both in the form of Harbinger's party crashing and Catalyst). Ultimately I want a rewrite, because if they do add closure or a happy option, it'll only exacerbate the writing problems in the scenes that lead up to the conclusion.

Definitely the lack of closure. I never expected a happy ending, not with an enemy that has wiped out civilizations for millions of years. I even fully expected Shepard to die, heck, I hoped I had the option to, you know, going out like a boss. I expected heavy losses, I expected more than a few friends dying, I expected victory over the Reapers with earth in ruins, and I expected closure for the remaining survivors. I wanted to see how life continued, without the Mass Relays and most of the technology gone.

But all we got was a light show, Normandy crash landing and that was it. Oh, and then the old geezer telling stories about "the Shepard".

they could have at least given us that oppurtunity to have a happy ending, like a reward if you have gotten high EMS

The fact that it's a terrible way to end a NARRATIVE is what bothers me. It's storytelling 101. You do not turn the laws of the fictional universe on their collective head in the final moments with no forewarning.

There's a lot more that bothers me, but this bit is just unacceptable with all the writing talent Bioware has available. Somebody should have stopped this ending in the rough draft phase.

This and lack of closure and the whole dialogue with some new character that is thrown in. It's okay to leave off on a cliffhanger if there is a To Be Continued, but this is supposed to be the end of Shep's trilogy, so end it properly! There are supposed to be falling actions and resolution, not a bunch of bright colors and cut to credits.

I would say both lack of closure and the impossibility of attaining a happy ending bother me very much. I also didn't appreciate them using their own lore/history/canon as toilet paper during the ending.

Mass Effect did a couple things really well as a series:
-player choices counted and were incorporated into subsequent playthroughs to truly change the landscape of the game. Different play throughs offered significantly different experiences.
-lore was written in stone. Bioware did not trip over their own plot lines and sub-plots.
-it offered you a strangely meaningful, rewarding, and emotional experience which allowed every player to take ownership of their shepard and their crew.

Mass Effect 3's endings failed at all of those Mass Effect trademrk strengths and more. It did elicit emotions from the players but from what I have seen, heard, and read about 90% of those players honestly hate the ending (there really is only one ending not three and certainly not 16) about as much or more than I do. I don't know about ya'all but that is not the type of player feedback I would wanna hear if I was running Bioware.

Yes, at least the happy ending should be an option like many things are throughout the trilogy.

IMO, even the happy ending should be grim. The only difference maybe would be less people dying and maybe Shepard surviving. But there should still have been a high price to pay for victory. After all, sacrifices happened during the entire game, no reason the end should be different, especially when the stakes are the highest.

Closing. I honestly think a happy ending would've been a BAD ending for ME3. THe reapers are supposed to be a major thing, having everyone dancing around in the meadows all happy like would make me roll my eyes

Closure and choice are both lacking. The potential for a happy ending is a pretty reasonable side-effect of choice.

That said, I could certainly take an ending where Shepard dies to save his friends/the galaxy. The end as it currently stands is a bit too bleak. Even tragedies have catharsis at the end.
