Does the lack of a happy ending bother you, or the lack of closure?

I am with FemmeShep. The lack of a happy ending does not bother me at all; I actually quite liked the martyrdom of Shepard to save the galaxy. However, everything after that (and the way this comes around) it completely non-scensical and so immensely stupid that I actually think I was left a dumber human being after completing the game. Therefore, I am mostly interested in closure and BioWare explaining to me what is heads and tails in that ending.

Both. You don't end a story where everyone is expecting explanations to unanswered questions with ambiguity for the purpose of speculation. That's just lazy, bad writing with absolutely no coherent direction.

You likewise don't end a story without telling people what happens afterwards when they expect it, with a stupid "Rocks fall, everyone dies" ending. That, is also bad and lazy writing.

You also don't forge a story based around your character always succeeding despite the odds, getting everyone out of the buring building in time, build upon the premise of choice and consequence, and then conclude everything with a single nihilistic finale. That's why it feels so jarring. Everything is optimistic, and then you utterly fail. Bittersweet is fine, for some, although what we have doesn't have a single bit of sweetness. I wanted and expected at least the opportunity to work towards a 'happy' ending (emphasis - millions are dead, civilization is devestated, all I wanted was for Shepard and his team to survive on at least on playthrough, to rebuild and mourn), but no, that's far too optimistic and therefore against the groove. Better have a cliche sacrifical finale, and fail at doing that as well.

Both - It's a RPG game that is supposed to revolve around choice. There is no happy ending given the state of the galaxy, but it can certainly be an option to have Shepard live (without an MP requirement). Give us CHOICE.

Both. Considering the ME series was known for having player choice affecting the story, I don't see how a happy ending couldn't be one of the possible endings you can get.
But even if they didn't want us to have some sort of happy ending I would have been fine with the current endings if there was actual closure where we can see how our decisions affected the galaxy. Instead we just see the same endings with no real context as to how destroy, control, or merging the reapers affected everyone.

I wasn't so much looking for a 'happy ending' as just an ending that Made Sense. Exploding relays would annihilate entire star systems ('Arrival'), Normandy's escape(?), and my LI's beaming up to the Normandy (after stating she'd stay with me no matter what) were just too glaring holes I can't make sense of.

This, we shouldn't sacrifice a happy ending for closure or vise versa. If the player wanted Shepard to survive in cliche fashion, the opportunity should of been there. And for those saying "But ME is dark." No, go play ME2 and tell me you can't be the hero of the galaxy.

The ending doesn't make sense at all, but closure out of the 2 options.

Ultimate Sacrifice is the best ending for DA:O, Planescape: Torment is the best RPG ever made and Gladiator is one of my favourite movies. You don't need happy endings to get an ending right.

Closure.

I've only played Deus Ex: Human Revolution through once because I felt that it gave such poor closure on huge chunks of the plot and on the player character's relationship with other characters. Have no desire to play it again.

I am the same with ME3 (if not worse)

Closure

The game feels like it ended on a huge cliffhanger.

I was extremely disappointed by the ending. Lack of closure, lack of explanation, my choices didn't really matter, secret ending about DLC LAWL.

And the main protagonist giving their lives up to save the entire galaxy is so over done. D:

</3 Loved the game but the ending was terrible.

(The ending reminds me a lot of FF XIII-2's ending, no real happy ending, have to wait for DLC)

No it has nothing to do with a happy ending it has to do with the current ending being an awful railroaded ending full of plotholes. Shep accepts the catalyst nutty logic for no apparent reason. I want diverse endings with vastly different choices and resulting consequences and no railroading. I'm quite happy to make different sacrifices on different playthroughs as long as i get different rewards. I don't accept having relay destruction forced upon me no matter what.

For me, I wasn't bothered because the relays were all destroyed and my Shepard's LI was left stranded with Joker. All of that was completely fine. I like grimdark endings, actually.

What bothered me was the lack of closure. The ending doesn't tell you how Shepard or the rest of the galaxy deals with the aftermath. It doesn't explain why Joker was fleeing the battle. It doesn't adequately explain or clarify the last twenty minutes of the game.

But, I can see why some would be upset by the lack of a happy ending.

I'm upset with the lack of options. Yes, I want a happy ending and the lack of one upsets me.

Sacrificing your character is pointless if you "have" to do it to advance in the plot.

I would be inclined to believe that being absorbed into the Reapers to become their Overlord (blue ending) was awesome if I ALSO had the opportunity to pursue self-determination and a mortal human existence.

Consistency, coherency, better writing more than 'closure' - although a bit of that would be nice too.

I was prepared for an ending that wasn't precisely happy, as I suspect many were.

The lack of an ending that makes sense and is not horribly written. That and closure and a happy endings. All those things.

grimdark ending utterly kills replayability for me especially in a ganme like ME. If I wanted to be reminded that life sucks and the you die then I'd be watching the news

Both. When I was promised ~16 wildly diverging endings based on my choices I just assumed my Broshep and Garrus would get that beach together.
