This article does a good job of explaining why the ending is so inadequate:

http://www.escapistm...ing-Controversy

In short, we get no happy ending, no closure, and no explanation- all the things people look for in an ending. The author argues that it's ok to skip one, but if you deny the audience all three, you'd better expect some backlash.

I am more concerned with the lack of ending we got. If you tell me that the endings are tragic or sad I only can answer: no they are just stupid. Mordin's end was tragic and sad. ME 3's "end" failed to provide any emotion what so ever. They should start with an ending that actually makes sense without obscure guesses, that actually provides anything remotly close to an ending, because we got some drivel on a wall that provided "lots of speculation" and nothing more.

Both. The lack of endings shaped by our actions and an epilogue are the big complaints this one has.

My biggest issues with the ending is that:

I. It's incoherent.
II. It redefines the entire main plot.
III. It contains plot holes/lore errors
IV. It lacks resolution/closure.
V. It doesn't reflect your choices made throughout the game.

So for me, it has nothing to do with the lack of a happy ending. Although for a game that is all about choice, why couldn't there be a happy ending? That's the only thing I'll say in that regards. Seems weird it wasn't at least an option. Or rather, there wasn't a path to get a happy ending.

I agree. This post covers pretty much all of my issues and opinions on a happier ending as well.

The above reflects my thinking as well.

I'll give Mac this, the intent of the ending is epic. It's the execution that's epic fail.

I'm just sick of Developers thinking it's cool to end a game with a "bittersweet" ending.....EVERY GAME DOES IT NOW DAYS.... Never thought I would miss the days of happy endings....not that I hated them to begin with..... but that's not the main problem with this ending. the problem is it is so full of plot holes it makes my head hurt, and WE WERE PROMISED 16 DIFFERENT ENDINGS..... not 1 ending with 3 different colors....

For me, I wasn't bothered because the relays were all destroyed and my Shepard's LI was left stranded with Joker. All of that was completely fine. I like grimdark endings, actually.

What bothered me was the lack of closure. The ending doesn't tell you how Shepard or the rest of the galaxy deals with the aftermath. It doesn't explain why Joker was fleeing the battle. It doesn't adequately explain or clarify the last twenty minutes of the game.

But, I can see why some would be upset by the lack of a happy ending.

It's an RPG, and should be built as such, all types of endings should be adressed. And closure would be nice when you have an RPG as well, you built this galaxy, show me why I bothered.

And theres a third thing missing. Continuity. have an ending that makes sense to what I have been told throughout ME and not contradict the universe BioWare put in place.

Both closure and gaping plot holes. They have a lot to "clarify" if they're really not going to change this ending.

Both really.

I don't personally need a happy ending but I can see why others would and this would be 1 of the "Multiple endings" we were promised.

Closure I can do without.

But the premise of the catalyst and how it undoes pretty much the whole series....ya that can go to hell.

Both.

Speculation is fine if we are going to eventually get our answers and find out if we are right. Speculation without answers is just frustration.

A chance for a happy ending gives me reason to play more than once. If I know that every road leads to doom there's no point in my taking the journey again.

Its mainly the lack of closure, although after what they gave us I'm doubting if they could pull off a grimdark ending well. So all thats left is a happy ending and hope they don't screw it up.

Both.

I was upset about the lack of closure because BioWare did exactly what they said they wouldn't do, leave us with more questions than answers. However, I did want the chance for a reasonably happy ending where Shep lives along with his/her LI and every species isn't totally screwed. As long as they made it incredibly difficult to achieve, varying happy endings would've been nice.

Personally I prefer happy endings.

But I also like sad endings, if they provide at least a certain degree of closure and fit in the overall theme of the game/movie/book.

So closure is a prerequisite for a good game/movie/book.
A happy ending is a nice addition.

Both bothers me a lot and it is only natural. I think most of people play games to feel better, not worse.

Both. In a series that emphesizes and can change drastically with the choices you make throughout it I would've liked the choice for a Happy, Bittersweet or Sad ending due to my actions. Not get forced into something that I don't want to do and then get the same result regardless.

The entire scene with the Catalyst seem to be misplaced. The choices, the reasoning and the way what happens doesn't fit the lore.

The ending could be slightly happier (they call it bittersweet, but I'd call it mostly bitter), but that doesn't mean Shepard and everyone has to survive. If things were less doom, gloom and implied holocaust I'd be happy.

I don't mind Shepard taking his last breath, I don't care if all my crew mates met a horendous end.. I don't even give a flying turd if every civilisation in the entire Game goes down and burns as the Reapers win and the cycle continous.

All I want is to know how the rest of my crew and the species of the galaxy fared after the events of Mass effect 3.
To see the result of my choises and action in the game and it's predecesors.

Instead all we get is closure for the Shepard, and semi-closure for everyone on the Normandy trough space magic.
Everything else went under the flag of 'speculation'

I want closure, I want the important questions awnserd, the main issues resolved and the supporting characters laid to rest.
I got nothing of this.

All I got was this Deus Ex Machina, closure for shepard and implied genocide of the entire galaxy.

I would like closure, predominantly. I don't necessarily need them to have a whole new ending, but I'd like the one we have be expanded a great deal. I mean a full discussion with the Catalyst, complete with investigative and argumentative options, as well as Interrupts. I would like scenes explaining what the Normandy is up to, and whether my squadmates are dead or not. I would like to see scenes with the fleet survivors as they discuss what happens next.

I don't really want a Fallout-style epilogue where text tells me what everyone did next, because we all have our own ideas and wishes for the characters we've come to know and love, and are perfectly capable of imagining our own futures, happy or otherwise. What we DO need to know is which of them are alive, and what options they have available to them. That is all.
