I use "Daniel."  It's from the Old Testament and means "God is my judge."

Given some of the pretty extreme decisions Shepard has to make, it seemed appropriate.

I just used my zodiac sign which, lucky me, happens to also double as an actual male name. Leo is my canon Shep. I like my name just fine, but I decided to use different names. I still see Leo as me. My other characters are sort of me as well, but of course I can't have 10 different male sheps with my name. LOL that would just be confusing.

Vera is sort of a staple for video games with me. One of my characters is always named that.

I liked the gender-neutrality of Devin, and it fit my canon FemShep well--I've always thought of her as the Warrior Poet type.

I admit I don't actually have a name for my canon MaleShep--he's just Commander Shepard and alright with that.

Blake is a name I really like for my canon manshep. Rebecca, Nina and Shane are pretty names I like for my femsheps. And Francis is my name.

Nothing overwhelmingly clever or anything, I really like the Star Wars books (Legacy, and Fate of the Jedi in particular) so I named my femshep Jaina, they both are tough, strong military-minded women that don't take "no" for an answer.

Malachi for my male Paragon. Means "messenger" which ended up being far more appropriate than I expected it to, but I originally chose it because it's close to my own name without being identical.

Marcus for my male Renegade. He's a Vanguard, and I wanted something that sounded tough, even brutal.

I started planning my FemShep before I sat down to play the game. I'd been watching my roommate play ME2 and I really liked the concept, so I decided to play it myself.

I wanted her to be blond-haired, blue-eyed like me, but I knew I didn't want her to have my real name. It's just too common (Sara), and I wanted something unique. I was teaching a class at the time, and the name of one of my students was Skylar. I really liked the name, and it fit with my headcannon that my Shepard was of Scandinavian/north European descent. Plus, I'm a pilot, and I thought a name like "Sky" is fitting and awesome. I decided to give her a middle name, too. Since I decided she'd be a quarter Swedish (like me, and her father is half Swedish, half Scottish, hence the "Shepard" surname), I wanted to make her middle name Astrid ("star"), but Skylar Astrid Shepard didn't sound quite right. I eventually settled on Laine for her middle name, more English, but it worked and still gave her name a very distinctly European sound.

My other three Shepards are fairly simple. My renegade Colonist/Ruthless Vanguard femShep is Amara (I just picked the name out of thin air, but it means "bitter," which is really appropriate). My paragade Sentinel femShep is Kathryn (Janeway Shep, lol). My paragon Engineer Sheploo is Mike (after a good friend of mine who is a very talented engineer).

I didn't give my Shepards middle names because it's not common in my country like it is in the US. But Rebecca has a nickname, Becky, such a shame noone ever calls her that.

Also, @HYR 2.0, I loved your explanation to why everyone calls Shepard by last name, wish I had thought of it first XD

Well, first off my Shepard's first name is Carole. She's a fiesty Vanguard / Paragade / Colonist / Sole Survivor :)

I don't particularly care for my name (Kendra), and I wanted my Shepard to be an "extension" of me, but not exactly the same, so I needed a different name anyways, haha.

I went to high school with a girl named Carole and I always loved the way she spelled her name. While trying to figure out what I was going to name my head canon Shepard I was browsing Facebook. I saw a post from my friend and the rest is history. Note, I did not name Shepard after her, haha.

When I reached Creativity on my real life character sheet, I had already spent all of my stat points.

So I went with the default name. I have many Johns and Janes.

Always thought the name Brooke was pretty badass and it's also a gorgeous name, and since Shepard is a badass, I named her Brooke. I have another one named Reagan too.

My first Shepard was the default 'John'. But I created him at the same time I was watching Firefly, and his personality in general was similar to Malcolm Reynolds. So his middle name became 'Malcolm'. Eventually, headcanon expanded and he became named for his supposedly deceased father 'Malcolm'. And I expanded his first name to Jonathan. Eventually I shortened his name to Jonathan-Mal, then just Jon-Mal.

I've always named main characters "John." So I was pleasantly surprised when I played the first ME, and found I could just keep it at default.

My FemShep is Carnetha. She is a strong woman and needed a strong name. However, I wanted something different, kind of spacey/futuristicy sounding, but still sounding noble and Ancient Roman-ish. I think I also got it as a variation of Carth from KOTOR . I also have another female that I don't use as often named Ariana. I don't really have a reason for it, other than just reallyyy liking the name haha.
My MaleShep is Kaige. Don't know where I got that one from, I think from Nicholas Cage...

My first mShep was named Zane, a name I've loved for years. It's the name of one of my own characters, who I thought I'd try kind of recreating in ME, but he took on a life of his own.

My 2nd mShep (canon) is John. He's a custom, but I wasn't being terribly serious about him for a 2nd play through and was being lazy about naming him. "John" may be the default name, but it was short, sweet, and appealing to me. He's now my favorite.

Alexander is my canon Shepard's first name-- I got the name from my sister's book which has a list of all names you want to give to a baby, but the true reason why I chose Alexander is because the name comes from the Greek name "Alexandros" which means "Defender of man", and that the name itself represents extrordinary prowess in battle-- the ability to withstand or push back an enemy battle line, which to my surprise coincidentally references Alexander Shepard's War Hero reputation.

I just pick random male/unisex names beginning with J. All my Shepards are J. Shepard. Though I couldn't resist naming my Adept Shepard 'Jack'. All with fear the biotic rampages of the double Jacks.

my sheppards are always named after colours. so, Azraq (blue in arabic) - Carmine (red) - Verta - ect..

Don't really know why, but using a colour as a base always gives me a direction to feel out the character as I play them.

Started playing ME1, wasn't sure what to name him. Roommate happened by, so I queried him. His answer?

Book.

I of course had to use this.

My favorite FemShep, the one I used from the beginning is Cameron. No real reason other than I'd just got done watching House M.D. and the name was still in my head.

I picked "Alice" because my when my wife was very young, she had a make-believe friend named Alice. Plus I actually like the name, and am considering it for my future daughter's name.
