 the dude in my profile pic is Ace Shepard. Ace is my name for all of my video game sprites, at least on the first playthrus. I dunno, it sounds like a cool name....I didn't want it to be something stupid like Maverick lollll

My main Shepard is named after myself, but for the rest I tried to use names of other fictional characters for appropriate classes. Hence Raven (Teen Titans) = Adept, and Sarah (Kerrigan) = Infiltrator. John (S-117) also made a good soldier.

I have one that uses my first name, Eric, but my others just use the plain old John and Jane and usually have the default appearances, just so I can get into the game faster.

Diana is my canon, paragade Shepard, I took her name from the Roman goddess of the hunt.  It seemed appropriate.  

I also have: Helena, who is a renegade modeled after BSG's Admiral Helena Cain; Justin, my paragon m!Shep, whose name means righteous and just; and Leda, my adorable paragon, whose name means "joyful happiness", but it's turned out to be a very ironic name, considering what happens over the course of the series.

I wanted to name her something from FFVII, my other favorite game, but Aerith and Tifa didn't really fit so I named her Marlena (like Barrett's daughter Marlene).

 I reread Starship Troopers and imagined that it shared ME's universe. Thus, Juan Rico Shepard was born.

I was into fantasy roleplaying games back in the day and I had made up a fantasy name that I pretty much used for all my characters so I gave Shepard that name. It was only a few years back that I learned that the name I had made up was actually a real name, or at least a variation on a real name, and mostly used for women (sometimes it's used for men but not often). My Shepard's a guy.

So now it's kind of a joke/headcanon for me that everyone calls Shepard by his last name because he insists they do due to his embarrassing first name.

Personally I love the names Alice and Madeline and put together with the last name Shepard and got.
Alice Madeline Shepard, which sounds really nice IMO.

My main maleShep is Thezreus Shepard.

Thezreus because... Well. Why not? Thezreus originated from a culmination of ideas on my part. I was enthralled by the name Theold for a time, and used it as a main in other games. The concept eventually evolved into Theomel Ezreus Ahzar(the full name of a desert-based dancer type character concept I developed). I ultimately desired to crunch it all into one name I could use for a first name, and Thezreus resulted! I generally associate Thezreus with dark skin(desert origin), very light blonde hair(purity, grace), and lime-green eyes(wind element, swiftness, etc.)-- and I think he pulls it off rather well if I do say so myself!

I tend to like, and ultimately create, exotic-sounding names.

For alts: Xyraphius Shepard, Xypherion Shepard, Xeniferos Shepard, Xevdythisi Shepard...

I used the forum name I have atm . I use it in most of my handle names/online names. Pretty effective, I enjoy it to say the least.

My canon Shepard's name is Francis. He's a Colonist/War Hero Infiltrator and, honestly, at first I just thought the name fit him. After looking into it a bit more, Francis kind of relates to how everyone sees him. Francis is a paragade, and in my headcanon most everyone sees him as a kind of saint, not knowing him enough to see his pragmatic side. Seriously, he (SPOILERS) killed Samara in favor of Morinth, sabotaged the Genophage cure, and has an affinity to blow things up despite his occupation as a tactical "kill them quietly and before they know" type of combatant. He's a genuinely good person, like Saint Francis. Its just that when worst comes to worst, he's more than willing to sacrifice the faceless billions and use the Krogan as cannon fodder to save Kaidan (LI) and the rest of his crew.

For my "alternate" canon renegon Earthborn/Sole Survivor adept femshep, I chose the name Anna Jen. A little bit more thought came into the decision to name her that. "Anna" after the prophetess in the bible, because Shepard has been trying to tell eveyone of the coming Reaper Invasion. And "Jen", not only because I thought it would sound really cool next to Anna, but because its meaning contradicts her "in your face" personality.Also, since Anna Jen tends to contradict herself sometimes by being mistrusting of aliens in ME1 and romancing Liara and later Garrus (She loves her Turian), being naturally mistrusting and ending up being cautiously believing of TIM out of spite to the Alliance, and hating synthetics with an exception of EDI.

Yeah, I have way too much time on my hands...

I choose Jack & Jill vs default John & Jane for my shepards. It seemed to keep with the theme they were kind of going for and created lots of hilarity in my mind when my male Jack romanced Jack(subject zero) Jack^2 for the win!

The name of my main Shep is Casval. He is Spacer/Ruthless

My favorite fictional character is Char Aznable (Mobile Suit Gundam). His original name is Casval Rem Deikum.

He is also knowed as "The Red Comet", and my Shepard is a vanguard and I always paint his armor red, so is a kind of tribute to the character of Char.

I think that's kind of neat, actually. Cool to see that kind of immersion, depth, and creativity with the RP aspect of the characters. Kudos!

I don't really have any "deep meanings" behind the first names of my Shepards.

My first (damage control) Shepard was named Logan because it sounded science fictiony, but every Shepard after that was given a name that fit his or her face and character. For example, my main Shepard is named John because he just looks like a John. And he's paragon (for the most part), so a popular biblical name seemed appropriate.

I tried a couple names including the default Jane, but they always looked wrong to me. I ended up using Robin because it always strikes me as having a certain irrepressible and hopeful quality. Shepard's all about beating the odds.

I cannot for the life of me remember how I came up with Sentinelle's name or my maleShep, Hale, either. I think the latter had something to do with Star Trek: TNG, but I can't quite recall now.
