I've never been a big science fiction fan and I was pretty skeptical when Mass Effect was announced. I'd always loved Bioware games though, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I really didn't think I'd like the game so I kind of just blew off the naming thing. I mean heck, they didn't even give femshep a default face. But I did end up loving it and eventually bought Mass Effect 2. When I loaded it up and imported my save file I saw my shep's name. I would be saving the galaxy with Panda Shepard.

It's grown on me though and it just doesn't feel right renaming her.

Name? I never really put much effort into serious names. My Shephard's name was "****tycakes". Shephard's name isn't used for anything but your own character screen, so I don't see the point of spending time to think of a good name.(Though, even if it -would- be displayed in dialogue, I'd still use silly names for good laughs)

This also bothers me in Multiplayer. Why force me to name my characters if it's not going to be displayed anywhere? It's not for distinguishing purposes either, since it's not hard to seperate the characters, being different races and classes...

But I digress. This was about how you came up with your Shepard's name. Well, it was inspired by Ben Croshaw from Zero Punctuation.

I have four Femsheps:

1) Blair--I just like the name. Blair Shepard just has a nice ring to it, and sounds badass. She was my full renegade playthrough.

2) Phoenix--I also just like the name, and it turned out to be very fitting for ME2 when she was reborn. She was a half-and-half, basically just picking the choices I myself would have picked.

3) Natalia--she was my full Paragon playthrough. The name means "birth of Christ", and if you see Shepard as a sort of savior-figure, I suppose it's fitting.

4) Sophia--the name means wisdom, and she was basically my "perfect game" Shepard. Knowing the consequences for every action, I played through ME1 and 2 picking the choices that would make the story the best for me.

My FemShep's name is Addison Shepard, as she was originally based on Kate Walsh's character in Grey's Anatomy. Over time, her appearance, personality, and background have changed, but the name stuck.

the dude in my profile pic is Ace Shepard. Ace is my name for all of my video game sprites, at least on the first playthrus. I dunno, it sounds like a cool name....I didn't want it to be something stupid like Maverick lollll

Nice!  I have an Ace too, but he's named for Ace Rimmer of Red Dwarf.

Most of my characters in games are from old Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, or other pen&paper RPGs.  Canon Shep is Vyan, after a female Revan, a D&D character, a Death Knight, and a Sage Consular in SWTOR - all light side/paragon type characters.  Also have a Devonna (Cyberpunk 2020 character), Astrid (D&D character, neutral Revan, also Commando Trooper), Kyja (DS Revan), Dakshi (WoW toon), and a few more.

I've always liked the name "Alexander", or "Alex" for short. And given both the meaning of the name ("Defender of Man") and Shepard's role as the protector of both humanity and the galaxy at large, it just seemed to fit perfectly.

I just look around my room loooking for clues...
I had a character in Dragon Age named after film theorist (Casetti), only because I had his book on the table. And then I had my mage under name Crowley with his dog named Aziraphael... I once had a character name after washing powder.

But to the ME. I though Maria was a great name for my renegade Shepard ruthless colonist. And she looked like an ice queen with her blue eyes and blond hair. I think I even made her German. So much for watching Fritz Lang films.

And since I finally played ManShep I named him Mark. You know he is practically Mark. Mark Vanderloo, Mark Meer. He just wants to be called Mark...

Named after myself lol. There is an amusing conversation with Dr. Chakwas were the whole first name thing comes up and why people call Shep Commander Shepard and not by their first name.

I looked at the keyboard on my screen, saw the name "John" already typed out.

Said to myself "Welp, that's good enough" and hit the A button.

I named her Lynd. Before I played Mass Effect for the first time, I watched Casino Royale and loved it, so I watched it over and over again. I thought Vesper Lynd was a cool name so ... I named my Shepard after a Bond girl, lol. ^^

Yeah...so I got five Shepards...

1. Genevieve
This is my first Shep/main Shep.  I picked the name because I wanted something unexpected that was still very respectable.  I felt like this since this Shepard doesn't really feel her first name fits her, she would prefer being called by her last name.

2. Saya
I was watching a lot of Blood+ at the time she was created...^_^

3.  Ellery
This is my other canon/main Shepard.  I needed a name that seemed wise and something also unisex since I felt that this particular Shepard would have a unisex name. She was also meant to be played as someone sort of wise, rather serious, beautiful and stately. Ellery means elder tree, I think?  I actually looked this one up when I created her.

4.  Luca
This was my first Renegadeish character.  I wanted another unisex name, also a name that seemed Eastern European because that was her family origin.  She's also fairly aggressive and I think the name implies that.

5.  Roxanne
This is my Renegon character who I tried to make very chic.  I needed a name that implied a sort of sleekness and felt that Roxanne fit bill.   Also her nickname with the Tenth Street Reds was "Fox" so I kinda wanted it to rhyme.  Lame, I know.

I have a tabletop RPG character that I've always wanted to play and probably never will get the chance. Hence, I always have one Kelly. My canon Shep is Kelly and designed to look as close to what I think she'd look like as I could get. I also pick as close as I can to what I think she'd be like.

Zaira is a random roll off a list of random names I've collected over the years.

Jade is a choice based on how the character is supposed to look a little like she has some Asian heritage but green, green eyes.

Ailian is actually another random role off another random list of names. It's supposed to be Chinese although Aili's not.

Interesting. I once named my blonde hair/blue-eyed Colonist FemShep Maria as well, although for an entirely different set of reasons.

Named all my femSheps after myself lol. This is the one video game series that I can do that because my actual last name is Shepherd (pronounced the same, spelled differently obviously). I even took the audio file of Garrus saying "It's me Shepard" from ME2 and made it into my text message alert.

All my Shepards are named after either video game or anime characters (with the exception of my one M!Shep which I let my kids name after their friend, lol)
Hence, we have:

Liryl ("Lighthouse" character)
Aelita ("Code: Lyoko" character)
Meche ("Grim Fandango" character)

Meche is my canon. <3

Sara Shepard for soldier Femshep. I wanted to name her Kara like the BSG character but decided I didn't want to be that derivative, so I changed one letter. It fits her.

Tay Shepard for Adept Femshep: Always liked the sound of the name.
