The glorious ending which perfectly represented the many decisions I had made over the course of all three games and 120+ hours of playtime.

ME2>ME3>ME1, I just can't excuse the horrible gameplay in ME1.

How was it horrible...personal preference towards games like Gears Aside...I think it played well.

I consider ME3 mediocre, and ME1 a living gold. I don't care about the shooting, the story rocks.

ME1 best ever. The others were too shooter-based.

Simple question, think long and hard, and explain your reasoning if you please.

They all had similarities and differences in approach, you can rank/compare them in any way you please, just want to know what you all thought.

For me it was Mass Effect 1, since it was the original concept, featured a very well defined series of foes, be it Saren, Sovereign, The Matriarch, the Geth etc. The graphics and combat were executed well, and despite bugs/glitches the game itself was solid. The story was tight and coherent, the cast of characters both in your party and within the universe was diverse, there was LOTS of sidequesting material and insane amounts of customization. Had freeroam elements both space and in the Mako :P. The battle sequences were all memorable and the events were cohesive to the main story. The choices you made had great impact on the outcomes of the game, and the final sequence itself was a masterpiece, the memory of scaling the citadel council tower will always be in my mind, as will the giant space battle that took place during. Sovereign was also one of the most intriguing foes as well, and his puppet Saren, and how the story seemed to shift between you and them very in depth. And again the geth made an amazing adversary, as well as all the other races you managed to fight throughout the course of the game. Overall I just loved it and its probably my favorite game of all time, and that is a title I don't bestow lightly.

So how about you? Which is your favorite?

I'll just plaigerize your critique because I think ME1 was best overall.  The story is everything.

In order:

ME1 (BEST story, best pacing, best RPG elements)
ME2 (Better mechanics, better graphics, improved mechanics, so-so story)
ME3 (Improved graphics, fairly well improved mechanics, throws RPG under the bus, the end murders the series retroactively)

ME1. Favourite moments in particular are Vigil and Sovereign.

Mass Effect 3 in my opinion. Best ending I'd say none of them, hate cliffhangers, but I really hated 3's so, if I had to pick my posion I'd say ones ending

I'm not saying ME1 was bad or anything (the story was phenomenal), it's just that the combat and inventory systems weren't really my cup of tea. As for ME3, the endings and auto-dialogue really decrease the replay value in singleplayer for me. Finally, ME2 just seemed like every playthrough was unique, the decisions mattered, and I felt enveloped in the ME universe as it was.

Mass Effect 1 doesn't end on a cliffhanger... Everything that the story sets in motion gets resolved. For all intents and purposes, the Reapers were just stuck in Darkspace, screwed until Bioware realized Mass Effect captured lightning in a bottle.

I found ME1 borderline unplayable after ME2. Not just the clunky combat and awful inventory -- the dialog was clunky too.

I'm still undecided about where ME3 fits in.

Mass Effect 2.

It would have been Mass Effect 3 if the ending hadn't sucked major krogan balls :(

ME2 is the best game I've ever played in my life. ME1 was awesome because it was first. ME3 is totally underwhelming to me. It's a distant third, and then only because it is part of the series.

How could you not like ME1's ending, had they not said the whole we are preparing for the reapers, they could have even went with the story ending at ME1.

Oh man, I don't know which one to choose. I think I liked the story of ME1 slightly better than ME2, but ME2 had far superior gameplay (except for planet scanning). ME3 had both better story and gameplay than either of them, but the ending was so bad I hesitate to even call it a completed game. :?

I loved them all almost equally, but I think ME2 is just slightly better. ME3 would take the last place,I'm hoping for some awesome DLCs (not alternate ending, but retake Omega or something).

In retrospect:

ME1.
Nearly lost to ME2.
Better(by far) than the current state of ME3.

Or in smileys:

Mass Effect 1. Thanks to the opening sequence and the narrative derailment of ME2 onward, I can to this day still play ME1 and imagine things having gone in a completely different and much better direction. One where the retro 70s/80s 'golden age of sci fi' vibe wasn't completely abandoned. Where the mystery of an unexplored and dangerous galaxy wasn't encapsulated in a series of galactic gang warfare and sexually suggestive sado robotic warships.  I've written the whole series off in one fugue of headcanon. But hey, at least I'm enjoying the multiplayer, for now.

Mass Effect 1. Playing it again right now after the abomination of a third part. Took some time to get used to the not-so-optimal mechanics again, but it's well worth it. Heck, it had an actual inventory! And dialog options in abundance. And free exploration. The citadel of ME1 alone is bigger than any level (*cough* corridor) in ME3. Plus after all these years it hasn't lost any of its fascination and immersion. Only the romances were better in ME2. Though none of them were ultimately truly fulfilling, as much as I love Tali. But hey. Except for some gameplay improvements, none of its successors ever lived up to the first.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins were the last real Bioware games, Accall. The rest since then are EA-Bioware. I used to scoff at people who made this claim prematurely, but it's pretty demonstrably true now, in my mind.

Yeah I know. Westwood, Bullfrog, Pandemic...
Let's not hijack this thread though. I think few people on here like EA anyway.
