I never played the first one, i played multiple times 2 and 3 and i can say i really love the second game, i loved in particular the loyalty missions, in particular the ones from Kasumi, Miranda and Tali. Probabbly if it weren't for the fail ending, ME3 would have been my favourite.

ME2>ME3(sans ending),ME1>>>>>>>>>ME3(As is)
In terms of replays, ME2(all possible LI combinations, one full paragon and one full renegade)>ME1(all LI's, again full paragon and full renegade runs)>>>>>>>>>>ME3(4 replays all up to Anderson's death and then quit)

Why you may ask?
Mass Effect 3 was better hands down, 5 minutes doesn't won't ruin the game for me. Unless DLC sucks then Me2 gets bumped up.
Me2 was great, but Me3 was more emotional and well... I'm a sissy. c;
Me1 was a slap in the face after I played the other games.

As Mordin: Vote, problematic
ME3 for me is the best in the series, but due to it being overshadowed by it's ending I'll have to opt for ME2, the suicide mission and the lead up to it are still fresh in my mind, and before anyone tries to burn me at the stake, yes I did enjoy ME1 a lot.

I voted for Mass Effect 1. For me, ME2 and ME3, just don't come close to anything ME1 had to offer. They are both good game, but not worthy sequels to Mass Effect 1.

Genophage.

Cerberus, the Reapers and everything related to the main plot is so hideously awful so from ME2 and onwards I've been in it strictly for:

1) the sidequests
2) the characterizations of the normandy crew
3) gameplay

...not necessarily in that order.

Yep, ME1 was on a level all of its own, and this isn't just nostalgia talking, it was an amazing game with amazing story and RPG elements, sure the combat system and the glitches were :(, but everything else made up for it.

the suicide mission in ME2 is my favorite part of any game, ever.

I wasn't overly fond of ME2 as a whole, but the suicide mission was truely epic and well executed, although the initial, tube sequence was kind of stupid, or well, there should have been something prior in terms of massive firefights.

For me it has to be ME1. Why? Simply because of the sense of wonderment it inspires. The huge landscapes, the vastness of the Citadel, and all of the unknowns presented in the game from the Reaper's motivations to mysterious planet descriptions.

The ME1 universe made you realize how deep the lore of the series is. While I enjoyed ME2, the sense of wonderment wasn't there. You visited a lot of cool places, but gone were the empty planets with mysterious bunkers and anomalies.

I LOVED the planet freeroaming, it never made sense to me why Bioware decided to remove content rather than improve it, they could have added randomly generated terrain with scattered factilities and enemies also randomly generated. Would have added much to the game, and even adding friendly NPCs on worlds would have given it even more exploration vibe.

But exploring was definitely the most fun portion of ME1, the world seemed massive, and I was spellbound.

In terms of narrative? ME1>ME2>ME3

In terms of gameplay? ME3>ME2>ME1

In terms of overall product quality? ME2>ME3=ME1

In terms of what I like the most? ...I don't know. ME1's story is easily my favorite. ME2's setup is my favorite. ME3, pre-ending, brought everything together in such memorable ways that I really thought I'd struck gold by investing in this franchise.

Then the ending happened.

I would have said ME3 but the ending ruined it. It is the best game i have ever played until the ending. But unfortunately that ending is part of it, so i will say ME2. ME1 gives more emotions but it has terrible combat.

Mass Effect 1 because it had the most coherent plot and best atmosphere of the games. Also, it is free of EA's claws.

As of right now?
ME2 - Best finale, great dlc, overall good game, but no squad banter.
ME1 - Story only, everything else has not aged well at all. I hate doing Noveria mission.
ME3 - Ending is bad and the game feels... incomplete... Gameplay is best, vanilla soundtrack is best, and this is the most emotional. If bioware can fix ending, bugs, and when they're done supporting with dlc I can see ME3 being #1.

Atmosphere is one thing Bioware knows how to do. And Mass Effect 1 was a perfect example of this, everything lead towards immersion, that you are within this vast universe which draws much from reality.
