honestly regarding story im caught between me1 and me3
Its a preference thing I suppose, personally the void between the games was pretty drastic for me, since ME1 was much better than ME2 and ME3, not that they weren't good games, but not nearly as good as ME1 in my books, plus I loved the story in ME1 and how it introduced you into the ME universe. ME3 had its story moments, but it was more about wrapping up what happened in ME1 than starting its own arch, and for that it was good in its own right.

Its not even a Mass Effect game, really.

I'd say this list about covers it:
1. ME1
2. ME2
3. nothing
4. nothing
5. nothing
6. nothing
7. nothing
8. nothing
9. nothing
10. ME3
Don't get me wrong, *some* parts of ME3 where actually not bad, but the whole package together was just way inferior to both predecessors.

Even thought ME 3 sometimes feels like a lifeless shell of it's predecessors because of it's lack of choices and dialogue, it does feel more fluid in the gameplay department.
However on all aspects (gameplay, story etc) I'd say, Mass effect 1 without a doubt. It even plays much more fluid to me than ME 2 or 3. Sure it's no gears of war gameplay but the extra layers of complexity appeal to me and so does the extreme customization this game offers with class talents and amount of gear/weaponmods. You can easily see this game was made by Bioware alone with the RPG mechanics and the gigantic amount of exploration available.

ME1 had a great central story but the game mechanics weren't quite there and the side quests were too cut-and-pastey for my liking.
ME2 had improved character development/interaction and better shooter mechanics with more interesting side quests but the main story was not as good.
ME3 had a great story right up until the end, and for me the character interactions were the best yet despite the loss of one dialogue option. Fetch quests were a bit meh but the proper side quests with previous squadmates were great. The Normandy in particular felt like a living ship, with other characters moving round and chatting to each other, and with something to say after just about every mission. I don't dislike the ending as much as some and I'm not bothered by the lack of variation, but nevertheless it felt way too rushed with too much that was poorly/not explained.
In the end ME3 still just got my vote because aside from the very end the rest of the game seemed to combine the best of its predecessors. I'm hoping that the ending DLC will help to make this a more clear-cut choice for me.

True, I hear all too often that just because it doesn't copy-paste the shooter model, as per Gears or Uncharted or whatever, that the gameplay is bad, what it did was fine for a shooter, because it was more a true RPG shooter.

'Cause I think a lot of people are excluding ME3 just b/c of the endings...

Yup, from what I've read on this thread, the majority thinks that way.
*sigh*
The endings sure do blind people.

This was actually a tough one to vote, because if I have to take the ending into account, then ME2 might just win out (loved the suicide mission vs hated Starchild), but final five minutes aside, it's ME3 hands down. So I didn't take the ending into account, and voted ME3.
That last few minutes of ME3 is making a difference, I think, in terms of how people vote. How about a separate poll, asking people to vote for ME1, ME2 or ME3 without the ending? It might give a better indication of how much impact the ME3 ending is having on people's opinion of the game overall. I'm still unsure from the current poll whether people think ME3 is a worse game, or just as good (or better) but with a rubbish ending ...

ME3 in comparison felt cheap compared to the amount of pure content that exists in even a vanilla ME2. I mean just look at what they did to just about every non-liara romance.

ME2 was ok, but the while Cerberus story felt forced. The characters were good though. The gameplay was too action oriented for me, but I could live with it.
ME3 on the other hand is without saving grace. Basically a linear shooter, with weak story and abysmal character development. For the ending I run out of negative descriptors....

ME2 had lots of strong points and far greater character development - but went a bit overboard with the dirty dozen - combat was improved, but the relation of the Collector mission to the overall epic is weak, and the side missions were even less well tied into the plot. Good but lacked the emotional punch of ME1
ME3 - Brando said it best in "On the Waterfront"
"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley [Casey?]."

Although I can't see that statistics changing much from there present distribution, although I have noticed as time has gone on, the ratio is becoming more even between the games, with ME3 getting more votes than it was per quota before.

1) ME3 (best emotional experience)
2) ME1 (most ambitious and best story)
3) ME2 (most polished one)
People are simply hating on ME3 as a whole because they dislike the ending, which is unfair imo, but whatever..

ME2: Being rebuilt really angered me having hated Cerberus i never felt i could trust him the whole way through but he was essentially a bad guy. Had to go along with it the whole game...but it didn't centre on him it centered on the amazing crew i got to know, and the collectors/prothean/reaper connection which i loved, didn't have to figure it out it just worked. The Alliance being wary and not trusting shepard was a bit hurtful but it again worked being rebuilt could mean shepard is a number of things. The illusive man pretty much used shepards name/ideal to recruit this group and being given the choice at the end to say NO was a real YES! for me. The collector base, choosing who should do what i loved, it was immersive, gripping i will admit the human reaper my immediate thought was 'terminator' but i was willing to overlook that because it didn't matter what it looked like. That wasn't important killing this thing and getting my team out is what was important. Again it was 'yes we did it' and a 30 second cutscene was enough. Satisfied again.
ME3: I can only say a few missions were fantastic, Rannoch, Tuchanka, Thessia i still loved a lot of the dialogue and the characters all great and i felt that same sense i had in the first 2 building up to this (oh wow we are finally going to stop this) and the inticipation i had was immense. I really don't want to nerd out on details because the general core/feel of what i have experienced is important. This was HUGE. All the species coming together to stand up to this finally... some of the scenes were great the fleets etc, the music was incredible but.. i don't know how to emphasise properly how i felt.
Using a simple hypothesis, you take a friends dog for a long walk through parks, along the riverside, maybe a close encounter with a cat (lol), over hills basically a nice route then 5 minutes before you reach your friends house you simply drop the leash and walk off leaving the dog sitting totally confused. I am that dog, why did you drop the leash.
Edit: Sorry had to do a quick re-fix im having a wierd issue with my browser or mouse.

The best part of the series was meeting Vigil on Ilos, the best game was ME2.
A lot of people liked that component of ME1, I personally preferred the speech with Sovereign on Virmire...guess thats a sign of the kind of person I am
But Vigil basically explained ME lore lol.
