It would make more sense certainly that it was just one being the whole time and it appeared as a kid to try and manipulate you when you were on the verge of victory. However there would've had to have been a reveal and not the total obliteration of the galaxy if you pick the destroy option for that to fly I think.

Good point, however even without the reveal it'd still make at least as much sense as the ending as it is now.

In my opinion.

If dancing Spanish pandas turned up and flamencoed the Reapers to death it would make about as much sense as the current ending!

But yeah, I agree the whole one being as all the Reapers would have been a better way to go.

So if the catalyst is what casues the reapers to do what they do ...

Why didnt Shepard just tell the fleets to blow up the Citadel?
Problem Solved.

Sure, he'd die ... and may cause alot of damage to Earth because of debris but the relays would be OK, the Reapers could go about thier merry way, and most everyone lives.

This. But, destroyng the Citadel would also destroy all teh Mass Relays (just theorizing).

Now that I think about it further, it seems less likely that the catalyst has been the big bad the whole time. Otherwise in ME2 you would have the situation where catalyst controls Harbinger who then controls the Collector General. Does seem like a stretch.

Though I'm still torn on whether the Reapers are fully sentient/autonomous.

I did not read the replys so I am sorry if somebody already said this, but this is from the opening cinematic of ME3. "In 2157, humanity discovered it was not alone in the universe.
Thirty years later, they found a peaceful place among dozens of galactic species. But this idyllic future is overshadowed by a dark past: Reapers, a sentient race of machines responsible for cleansing the galaxy of all organic life every 50,000 years, are about to return. The leaders of the galaxy are paralyzed by indecision, unable to accept the legend of the Reapers as fact. But one soldier has seen the legend come to life. And now the fate of the galaxy depends on him." So yes. They are sentient.

That's a good point, but as I said in a previous post what I should have named the thread was "do they have free will" instead of "are they sentient" because I think A) that's a more interesting question and B) it's closer to what I was actually getting at.

Though if the catalyst was really the one behind them all along there would still be A sentience behind them, even if they weren't each individually sentient.
