Hi. I have just finished my first runtrhu, with a warrior.
Thougt I would try a mage this time, but am a bit unsure how to build a good one. What do you think is a good build for a first time mage?
spells/specialtions etc?

There are several spell guides on the forums. I've got this one and this one bookmarked.

Edit: removed bad link

I'm going to admit on normal my mage dies constantly. So this is ok advice, but not great.

Magic is obviously a super important stat that is a requirement to be a certain # to take higher spells and how powerful they are. Put a few points in Dex so it's at least 12. But that might just be years of NWN talking.

Almost equally important is Willpower which determines how much Mana you have to use.

Spell selection? Depends on what type of Mage you are. What your character would love to use. I love magic, and consider myself a mage IRL so the type of spells I took are the type I would love to have if obvious showable magic was within my power to use on this plane of existence. That is to say: Primal, with a dabbling in creation only for the Heal line of magic.

But telling you to Role Play your character may lead you to as many deaths as I've had. Which is bad.

As far concrete advise on taking spells: I think a mistake I made was dabbling in first tier of all of Creation magic first for a wide range of damage types. I'd suggest working toward a third or fourth tier spell you think rocks as fast as possible.

Earliest picks should be: Winter's Grasp, Cone of Cold, Rock Fist, Heal.

Get the Fireball quickly as well, it really 'solves' group encounters. Finally, don't leave home without the Force line.

Freeze and Shatter combo is ridiculous in its potency. As your spellpower grows, so does the fun factor of it. Last night, I managed to shatter a Revenant in Redcliffe with it - surprised even myself.

This is assuming you are going to be the only mage in your party and play with friendly fire enabled. Should you go with three mages, you can obviously specialise a lot more. Also, this is all personal opinion because I loathe the cast time spells etc. blah blah blah.

For your stats, put everything in magic. At some point you will acquire enough combat mana regen equipment that any point in willpower will feel wasted; until then, make a batch of 100 lyrium potions and chug them like a madman.

Spellwise, both heal and mass heal are enough for your party members; regeneration and heroic defense are very nice but not necessary.

In the Primal line, fireball is an excellent opener; shock and cone of cold are both very good in close quarters and additionally give you lightning and winter's grasp.

Take mind blast early to avoid any threat problems you will get; pick up mana clash even if it means wasting three points in that line to eliminate any threat enemy mages normally pose.

In entropy, the first three hexes should solve any problems bosses might be giving you.

With books, talents from quest rewards and the like you should have enough points leftover to dabble and customise.

As for specialisations, I'd suggest going either Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior (with Wade's Superior Dragonskin Armor you end up with ~12% negative fatigue and +2 combat regen, and, coupled with e.g. that expensive staff from the circle tower merchant, enough regen to ignore both potions and willpower entirely) or Spirit Healer/Blood Mage for Blood Wound. AW/BM is popular but extremely dull to play.

After you pick up some damage spells, I'd recommend the glyph line. Repulsiveness gives you a nice little circle you can fit up to 3 character in that will knock back most monsters. I'm on my first playthrough too, as a mage. I have a mixture of crowd conrol and damage spells on my mage. Wynn is the party healer but I have the basic healing spell and the group heal spell too.

I've been going 2 magic, 1 will power for attributes.

It's hard to build a bad one. :) Take Heal and Winter's Grasp first. Those two will take you a long way and will be bread and butter for the whole game. Then go for Cone of Cold. After that, grab Force Field since you start with Mind Blast (you can go straight to Crushing Prison if you want).

From there, it depends on how I am going to build my mage. If I am going AW/BM, I got for the sustains (Arcane Shield, Rock Armor, Miasma, Death Magic). If I am going DPS, I go for Mana Clash and then straight for Storm of the Century (Blizzard and then Tempest). If I want more CC, I go for Sleep.

Stat. wize, go for MAG up to mid 30's so you can get the good spells. Then go to either WIL & CON for the tough mage route or spike MAG for the glass cannon route.

BM is a great spec. to grab at 7 if you've unlocked it and so is AW. I usually put SH on Morrigan so I don't take that.

It's important to decide how many mages you want in your party, and plan accordingly. Building a mage to support three physical companions is completely different from building a mage to group with Wynne, Morrigan, and one tank.

After experimenting a lot with different party makeups, I've found that I enjoy a 2-mage party best, with a tank and a rogue/ranger in the other slots. So I gave my PC mage Spirit Healer and Arcane Warrior (just for armor, not using AW mode at all), while Morrigan is a Blood Mage. Both of us have different control lines- she has ice and sleep, I have glyphs and paralyze... there are enough spell lines that you can get plenty of variety even with three mages, but you definitely want to make sure that the basics are covered regardless.

Don't worry about Willpower. Yes, having more mana is good, but having your spells do more damage is better.

I generally keep my Willpower score at half of my Magic Score (which means no points into Willpower at all for the first several levels).

If you're only bringing the one mage, focus on crowd control. The Sleep line is very nice.
