It really amuses me how, in this day and age, news of a sex scene in a
game can make the headlines. It amazes me further that some people
still see fit to complain about sex in computer games at all.

Why is sex in games bad? An editorial over at Inc Gamers discusses this particular question. A very interesting read, written by a woman.

its everywhere else, T.V, Ads on T.v, or magazine's or books or movies.

I guess games still get too much flack as it is, to push it too far.

I think the people who still think it's bad are the same people who still believe that Video games are for Children only. I don't think it's going to get any better for awhile, not until the generations that is our parents die out and a generation more comfortable with video games and see them beyond just children's toys start to take positions of power and influence in our communities/governments/media etc

I totally agree with this. Some people still don't understand that an 18 age rated game is only for people over the age of 18.

Good article.

As for it being by a female writer, not that it matters, but it says "by Bill Vaughan" which sounds like a man's name to me... though the picture beside that looks like a woman... never met a woman named Bill.

There was more nudity on some of the Bosses than in any of the cutscenes. ^_^

Sex in games is bad because they are almost universally badly done. After I'd seen the scenes once, I had absolutely no desire to EVER see them again - they were that bad in Dragon Age.

If they can make it halfway decent, like in ME, I'll tolerate it, but in general, my stance is they're better off leaving well enough alone.

Dragon Age is for the kids. If kids see sex in Dragon Age, they might have sex in real life. VERY dangerous.

Romantic storylines in games suck because they're badly written.

Storytelling in games can be quite good. And throughout human history, romantic plotlines have been the foundations of some of the greatest stories ever told. But so far, it just hasn't worked in games.

IMO, games have badly written romantic storylines because they're treated like optional add-ins to a larger story. So long as it's optional, skippable, and not the main focus of the work, it's going to get short shrift in the writing and production process. When it's written as a distraction to fill some time between the long periods of murder, it's going to come off as such. That's fine if you like the game equivalent of studio-directed thrown-in sex scenes in the middle of an action movie, in there mostly to get some sex appeal into the trailer and help the opening weekend gross. But if you want a romance worth reading/seeing/whatever, you're looking in the wrong place.

I don't know why, but the harsh pragmatism of this comment made me laugh.

As for why sex in computer games is so frowned upon, it's probably for the same reason that amongst the first mods released for games these days are nude textures. We (people) generally like to believe that we are higher minded as a species than the actual truth reflects. The truth is embarrassing.

Lol!

I still find it funny that people get scandalized by these things still. Sex is part of life and if you don't want your child watching, read the flipping label.

This is because they have to tread on eggshells. ME was more than halfway decent, it was tasteful, soft, and at least as well handled as a good cable TV show. Not that that's some big masterpeice of art, but it's at least a good showing. Still, they got slammed in the news fodder for the idiot masses, so now they got scared and took two steps back. They use even more restrictive camera angles and leave on the underwear, making it virtually impossible for their animators to do anything good with the scenes.

Shame on BioWare for getting scared, backing down, and allowing mass media to damage their artistic integrity, but I understand how it came about.

Unfortunately, you'll never overcome the fact that 49% of people have a below average intelligence. (Yes I know that's hyperbole and not actually how statistics work, but the point behind it remains pretty true.)

I don't mind sex in video games and as the author said it is a way to draw us in the story. I dont think the sex scene in the game were that bad really. It could have been a little less "puppet like" but overall it was ok.

Also maybe I am overly open with my sexuality but I really don't think the sex scenes shown in the game warrant a adult rating at all. The blood, some of the action and the story matter, yes but really two people touching over their underwear not really. That said I don't mean to restore the debate sex vs violence.

Oh no did I miss the sex scenes? LOL! Man I shall have to play it all again and again to find this illusive social hug. Must be that my answers to suggestive lines were not encouraged......could be that what you answered is what you got. Hey, Witcher had sultry scenes and language too that was eye brow raising but hell we enjoyed the game immensly. Kids should be supervised with what they play, parents were are they these days? Or do parents allow kids to read Playboy etc...what do I know......seems to me this is designed for a Mature player...says so on the box. Now what character should I start with.......mmmm

"Young boys may see women as sex toys"...Boys shouldn't be playing the game anyway its for 17/18+, I'm probably horribly abnormal by that age I'd had a steady g'friend for 3 years, & been chasing anything in a skirt for a year before that. Its ridiculous that violence in forms most people couldn't dream up in a million years is the norm in most games & is regarded as fine, but sex is some terrifying taboo that will turn everyone viewing it into a crazed siko.

I sort of agree with this, for different reasons. I don't think it's absolutely that because it's optional so it gets less production value, but because it's optional so it has no impact on the overall story. For romance to have a realistic impact on a game, it needs to be a major driving factor for the main character, and it's all but impossible to do that if it's optional.

This is a hurdle for RPGs because it needs to be optional. You need to be able to choose to fall in love or not, and choose who with. But for realistic romance, it must be acknowledged that one of the main motivators for most humans is romance. It's the driving force behind the heroes of many quality stories.

As long as romance feels like something on the side and not a main focus of the character's life, it will feel inconsequential and superficial.

If I choose Alistair as a partner, then aside from my conversations with him and some comments from my party, it has no real impact on the story beyond what it would if you were his good friend. I'm not motivated by my love for him in any way. It's just not organic.

(Edit Note: I haven't finished the game so this is a preliminary impression.)

I find it disturbing that we don't mind our kids chopping people to pieces with knives, swords, axes, and what-not, but a little side-boob sends us all in a panic.

2 thoughts.

1)Know what your kids are playing, today video games are more like interactive movies than like pacman.

2)Sex scenes in video games typically suck because most programmers have never had any

I wouldn't say that. It might be your love for Alistair that changes how the story ends.
