Yes F-C I do, if you're to busy to have kids then I suggest you don't. Your KIDS take priority in every aspect of your life or they should. If they don't and you find yourself to busy to regulate what your kids are watching, playing, listening to, then perhaps you just arnt in a position to have kids right now, and maybe you should wait.

Your kids arn't my responsibility, they are yours, if you dont want to take the time to look at a box and see THE HUGE M ON IT, then I dont know what to do for you. It would be like not looking at the nutritional value of the food you are feeding your children, not looking at their homework or even making sure they are doing their homework.

Are you to busy to know where your kids go for fun? Who they associate with? I mean I know all that takes much more time than turning over a box they hand you when they ask you to pay for the game or even for money to buy the game. I understand looking up a website and seeing "Game Rated M for Mature Contains "" must take away so much time. You're making excuses for yourself, stop making excuses for yourself and start being responsible for your kids.

So true. I'm sorry if I said mean things about americans, I really do think most of you are great people and I am immensly thankful for all the wonderful games you've given us (I know Bioware are Canadian, but there are lot's of great non-Bioware games too).
I still do hate the ESRB though.

Hey no offense taken.  I am a French girl raised in Quebec that lives in Montana (US) so really I am tired of generalisation in my day to day life mostly.  I feel like doing the slow motion ogre move when guys say ooh lala to me with a french accent  on a regular basis.

So sex? Alistair? Enchantment?

I think that like african-americans can use the N word, gays can use the Q word, and Mel Brooks can make jokes about Jews -

An American can freely critique America.

So -

Large portions of America, as I see it, are at least fronting that they are religious puritans. They make a big stink because (as they see it) how can they lose, as who's really going to argue that babies should be watching hardcore pornography or that NAMBLA is a bunch of swell guys?

Oh, they favor the strawman argument, surely. Did my sarcasm show?

Not all American's are religious zealots (heck, not all religious people are zealots!) but a large, very visible group of them ARE.

America was build on Puritans - and somehow, despite Freedom of Religion (that implicitly, and should explicitly, implies Freedom FROM Religion), our mass cultural identity views nudity as the most dangerous thing to anyone, especially children.

If you are American and do not share that stance (the puritanical one) then do not be insulted. Not all Americans (here's one writing this right now) share this restrictive view.

Other countries have a bigger problem with violence in video games due to their culture's views on violence in media (thinking Australia and Britain here, but I'm sure there are others) and those countries band games that America has no problem with.

So, to be clear:

I am an American. Born and bred, raised in a Catholic family, served in the Army. And I believe that a noticeable and disproportionately powerful group of religious puritans DO affect how much nudity and sexual content is in media, even for those who don't care if it's in there or are seeking it.

arguing that places like walmart wont sell the game then is not much of an excuse really. if you want it to be sold in walmart it shouldnt have sex scenes in it and be in the video game section in my opinion. i dont see them selling 'debbie does dallas' either.

Why do you care if walmart sells debbie does dallas?

you just completly ignore that any game with even something as minor as a cuss word or an explosion in it will get labeled as mature.

so now you are going to tell me its her fault her husband was killed and she shouldnt have had the kids because her life is so overwhelmed now. she should have been able to tell the future and know it was going to happen before she got pregnant.

alright then, you sure are a classy guy.

when you wake up and realize people have to deal with the reality of their lives, weather its nice or not, let me know.

until then this discussion is over.

This is the back of the box, you will notice next the M+ rating there are the reasons why the game was rated M+ and what to expect.

Its always easy to make up situations, I dont know you personally, nor do I care to. Lifes hard and life throws stuff at you thats always, you have no idea who I am or who you are talking to, and I dont care if you do, but dont pretend that you or your family are only people in this world that have it hard. That being said its not the point of this discussion, you want to cite excuses if thats the case maybe you all shouldnt be playing video games then, there are more pressing issues to deal with.

The ESRB is stupid! It's entirely private, and entirely voluntary. Game designers don't design games around the ESRB unless they're shooting for the E or T rating (for the kiddie market). Violence got this game an M - there's NOTHING else the ESRB can do with even if the game had full-on penetration.

If you want to blame any coercive foreign element infringing on game design - then blame the 20-odd-plus Bureaus of Censorship that every post-feudal semi-state has across the pond. These organizations have real power and real authority to restrict game sales. The ESRB is a paper tiger.

As per puritan American society, Bio already took their flak from Fox News for Mass Effect. AFAIK, ME2 is still gonna have homosexual sex with aliens - it's NOT FAIR to blame America for EVERYTHING!

Every society has its taboos. For America, it tends to be showing or discussing sex around children or young teens. This may seem weird to Europeans, but Americans think its weird that Germans have strict anti-**** laws which infringe on our sense of free speech. Or countries that still have laws that make it a crime if you insult the royal family.

At any rate, I'm sure Bioware made a calculated business decision when it came to DA's sex scenes. Showing graphic sex would have made a few fans happy but resulted in a possible massive loss of sales. For better or worse, WalMart has a huge impact on America's commercial scene. If they won't carry a game, a lot of other retailers won't either. From a business standpoint, it would be crazy to have full sex shown in this game. And besides, I'm sure a mod showing full nudity is in the works, if it hasn't been released already.

O_O, not only does sex sell it seems, it makes for massive threads, O_O

For the record I do think the underwear does look odd during the one scene it appears, with every other time being fade to black, so I think the scenes could have been done more similar Mass Effect extra, still being tasteful but a bit more believable. On the other hand it's hardly even that major a part of the romance quest to I don't really mind, also yes, here in the UK the game is rated 18, for me a view such a game to then be for 18 or older the same as any movie like that, and obviously not something I would let my nephews play or see. It would be by definition for adults only in my mind

Just wait a few more years and it'll be porno cut scenes in vivid action.... really!

and as a comment to the snide remark by Jack_Cheze about programmers have never had any (sex) well guess what? most programmers have never used a sword or worn armor either! Point?

Sex is as normal as eating so why not have it games - I'll rather my kids were f...ing than fighting!

Its not really an argument over nudity and/or sex, its the freedom to express it in a game, and the arguments that people are trying to present that state that they shouldn't have to be responsible to read why a game is rated a certain way.

Only in America do we have such stigma over sex and nudity, in Europe seeing a nude woman during a prime time tv show is common. Here in America however we let those who pretend at being holier then thou dictate to us what our morals should be. I am truly thankful that John Ashcroft was ousted before he could do any more real harm other then spending ten grand to cover a statues breasts.

What truly amazes me however is that most of these same parents will set thier children down unsupervised infront of a PC, I commented about this to a friend once who's response to me was "it's only world of warcraft." obviously the idea of child predators never crossed his mind untill I mentioned it. Now I am not saying that pedobear is going to steal your children if you let them play wow, but it is a venue that is probably appealing to child predators giving the amount of parents who see video games as being the ultimate baby sitter.

Right, like in Australia the OFLC has the power to actually ban media from the country.

ESRB is just an entity that offers guidelines for parents making decisions on what games to buy for their kids.

yeah, its just mature rated, which was my point. herp durp.

you really expect say my nieces mother who is a single mom with 2 kids, works full time, has to take care of her house, family, herself, bills, laundry, cooking, cleaning, and everything else to have the time to sit down and look up every little detail about every little thing their kids want to get?

arnt you just living in your own little world.

slapping an Explicit label on the box instead of the standard mature rating that is on pretty much every game that even has something as minor as a cuss word would be a good alternative in my opinion.

If your nieces' mother was a decent mom, I'm sure she could spare the half-minute it takes to actually read the label where it says "sexual".

Also, your opinion of a good alternative is based purely on your problem, not anyone elses. You are basically saying "Mature doesn't mean mature! It means little kids, herp durp." So basically the world should cater to your own ignorance and misconceptions. Herp durp indeed. The M already says it all.

Even the "Wal Mart Ban" on products is pretty much an urban legend. I think the last time they actually "banned" a video game was in 2002 - and that went away as soon as they realized it would sell. Other bans are on a store-by-store basis, like Hawaiian WalMarts banning Superbad because the DVD case included a fake Hawaii driver's license, etc.

Just like to say, if I was a teenager I would buy Dragon Age and no parental warning would stop me from getting it. C'mon blood, sex and dwarfs sounds like the perfect night. I was bought the first GTA for my 11th birthday from my mum and I have never run over a group of Hare Krishnas.

Did computer games like fear effect, tomb raider, leisure suit larry etc. make me have under age sex (I was 14)? No. At that moment in time I would hump anything with a depth bigger than my John Thomas and had a pulse(to be honest it wasn't a must have) ,and that was down to hormones, not games.

It is only a computer game and if some idiots want to emulate it(yes if you don't know the difference between reality and a computer game when you are a teenager, you are an idiot), well good luck with the child, the adoption or the abortion.
