BoltGypsy, I know enough about the story to know that Hawke either sides with the mages or the templars at the end. So, I'll bring Merrill since I'll be on the mages side (then again, I'd have to learn more of the story, since the mages might be up to some bad business).
All of your companions will be present at the end. So if Fenris' or Aveline's score isn't high enough, you'll lose them when you side with the mages.
This isn't entirely true for Fenris. It also has to do with whether or not you've completed his personal quests.

I'm curious: Do mods go in the "override" folder?
I'm finding this game to be much harder than Dragon Age 1. Enemies are much harder to kill.
Mods will go where they are explained to be installed to in the discription of the mod. It may contain folders that will end up being placed in tha addins folder as well.

I'm midway through act 2. I have 3 words to say about this game: I like it! I had no idea how awesome this game was. It's quite a bit harder than DA 1 though, so I had to set the difficulty down to 'casual'. Playing it on casual makes it about as hard as DA1 played on 'normal'. I'm curious: what quest ends Act 2?
Glad you like it! . Regarding the final quest of Act 2, you will be able to tell because Aveline will make sure you have finished any other business before you complete it. Hint hint: it has to do with the way the act began.

True. If you haven't completed them his score won't be high enough in either direction to keep him on your side if you side with the mages.
BTW, like the Firefly quote in your sig.

Yeah, I learned that my first playthrough. I missed one of his quests somehow and then bad things happened later and I was bummed. Thanks!

Actually, Kavatica, I think you may be right. I seem to remember doing a playthrough, having Fenris at full friendship, and having him leave to join the templars, anyway. I believe I missed doing his last "Questioning Beliefs." I was pretty shocked when it happened, too. First time it ever happened to me! Happened a second time on a later playthrough but I was able to get him back that time. Whew!

A justice abomination might be helpful, unless he just wigs out and attacks everyone. It's wierd, because both Anders and Justice were good, but when you put the two together you get this psychotic mixture.

Anders is pretty good too and the poor squishy love keeps things interesting. I loved where they went with his story so keep him around regardless.

Same here. I'm near the end of act 2. It took me a year to pick up this game because of all the people ripping the game on this forum. I decided to give it a shot only because I loved DA:O so much and I thought I at least owed it to Bioware and myself to judge the game myself instead of relying on second hand rants.
I'm totally enojying this game. There are some major issues that really bug me (recycled environments (they rushed this game to market) and spawning enemies / multiple waves). But they also did a lot right compared to DA:O.

I'm done with Act 2 now. One of my biggest problem is that Hawke inflicts very little damage, so I wasn't able to duel the Arishock. Varric seems to inflict the most damage with Bianca. In the final battle, I'll probably take Varric, Anders, and either Bethany (now a Grey Warden) or Merrill.
The only way to duel the Arishok is to hit him and then run in circles. Hit him, run in circles. Hit him, run in circles. And hide behind the pillars. Also, bring a bootyload of health potions. I learned this the hard way. Especially because every time you die, you are forced to rewatch the entire cutscene over and over again. By the end I was reciting all the lines word for word. But, when you finally do beat him, oh how sweet it is. I think I almost cried.

Thanks for the input, but I wanted to save my health potions for act 3.

The arishok is a pain in the ass so don't worry about it too much Sir Pounce. Varric is good at dishing out lots of damage since Bianca levels with him and hilarious to boot.

That Arishok was a major pain. I couldn't even beat him on the 'casual' difficulty, unless I wanted to lose all my healing potions. Storywise, agreeing to his duel didn't make any sense either. Varric was definitely funny. I laughed when he made up the story about how he killed a bazilion guys with Bianca in his brothers house.

I was the same way with DA2. I heard all the negative comments and decided that it probably wasn't a good game before I even played it. The recycled environments bugged me a little bit, but the only real criticism that I have is the sheer volume of people that you kill. I'm surprised that there were any people left in the whole city.

haha, yeah it is some massive carnage. I don't mind that since most games do that. It is the enemies that appear out of nowhere. If there are a lot of enemies, show 'em to me all at once. It's one thing if they are darkspawn since they can pop out of the ground. Or demons which can be summoned. But when a bunch human warriors appear out of thin the air behind you, that bugs me to no end.

The number of people that you kill in DA2 is sort of silly. It reminded me of that scene in the movie "Hot Shots! Part Deux" where the movie is declared the most violent movie ever. It's a great game, but this is my one criticism.
Honestly though, what game that is combat oriented is there where the body count is not massive?

It gets easier. My first playthrough he killed me numerous times on casual mode before I finally beat him. Now I can kill him quickly on casual and I think I barely use any health potions. But he's definitely tough.

Keep in mind that the game takes place over a span of 10 years. So you aren't killing that many people in one year. But yeah, Hawke kills people a lot. Hawke also jokes about that a few times in the game. A lot of really poor people. Who carry around crappy loot.

I have a story-related question. I know that Anders blows up the Chantry and that I'll probably lose him. Unfortunately, he's the only healer that I have. Bethany is a healer too, so my question is, how much time elapses between the time that I lose Anders and I get Bethany back? If it makes a difference, she's a Grey Warden now.

Killing monsters, critters, demons, abominations, undead, etc. is one thing, but it just seemed silly for Hawke to wack that many people. It was over a 10 year period though, and Varric's story could be exaggerated.

Wow. Sucks that the ending was spoiled for you. That was kind of a fun moment of complete shock and dismay for me. Also, you might not lose Anders. If you do lose Anders, you will meet up with Bethany very very shortly afterwards.

Well... you don't automatically lose Anders... you have a choice.
If he kills a bunch of innocent people, his head is gonna go flyin'. Rofl.
So, considering that, how long do I have to wait for Bethany to come back? I don't want to chug too many healing potions until the final battle. I assume that I'll be fighting Meredith, and I'll bet that she's no pushover.

Oh yeah, you don't get to do...that.
You have to wait as long as it takes you to walk down a flight of stairs. (Edit: and by you, I mean Hawke)
