I happened across his videos by accident the other day and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was just going to be another geek ranting on the internet, but it's actually a series of passionate and cogent thoughts put forward by a dedicated fan who obviously cares a great deal about the subject matter.

I like his other videos, but I strongly disagree with the assessment that BioWare has lost their "passion" on the basis that the game's attention to detail is amazing. A tired game maker that just wants to be done with it would not have made the fourth wall breaking Conrad Verner scene, or an audio trailer for a Blasto film that goes on for what feels like ten minutes. There are hundreds of little things someone went out of their way to get in the game that nobody would've missed if they had not. My biggest complaint was the fetch quests, until I realized they don't actually replace sidequests. War Assets are the new minerals, and we are simply mining them in a slightly less repetitive way.

90% of the game is on par with the rest of the series (whether you agree or not with certain design decisions is a matter of personal preference), and the only reason there's a dip in quality towards the end is the deadline.

Just a comment on the first 5 minutes or so of his video.

I hadn't thought of not revealing the background for the Reapers. This is the first time I've even really given it any thought but the more I think about the more I think it would've been a great twist.

Scrap the ending that we have, imagine a really good one, but have the "Twist" be an ending with no true explanation for why the Reapers do what they do or any reveal as to their creators.

(Just to be clear completely scrap the current ending & imagine one where the Crucible is the ultimate weapon, no Star Child, Shepard does his thing & ends the Reaper threat but we never get  a detailed explanation on the Reapers thesmelves)

Now this would've been an interesting road for BW to go down & would've created (a fun) & endless debate over who the Reapers were created by, debate their motives, etc etc... I like the idea.

I could see how that ending could work. Obviously BW decided not to go down that route at all & their end reasoning for why the Reapers exist was pathetic, but man that would've been a fun "twist" in itself. To leave the Reapers as this alien, unknowable evil.

This is sad. See for yourselves.

tl;dr From a programmer-perspective view, Bioware lost the passion to work on Mass Effect.
The first two videos:

www.youtube.com/watch & www.youtube.com/watch

EDIT 1: Changed the topic's name because of constructive criticism.

EDIT 2: I said here that Bioware didn't care..I think they do, but for different reasons...

Who is this guy that I should care what he thinks?

He has the credentials to actually be able to back up what he says?

This videos is just a opinion on the situation. But he hits the spot right on several times, being reasonable and very detailed. I must watch for all fans of Mass Effect.

Well, ****.

Edit: He raises a lot of good points, which sadly, I'm starting think are true. Bioware isn't evil, they just seem to have lost their passion.

I'd invite you to watch the whole video. Or you're like this ME3 reviewers who didn't play the whole game, and still thinks it's magnificient?

Not worth my time.

Anyone who takes the dark energy thing seriously is demonstrating prima facie they haven't done the background reading in the codices they need to be remotely credible on the subject.

Anyone who thinks the conflict between synthetics and organics isn't a sufficient, ongoing theme in the game to base an ending around, just wasn't intellectually there while playing the games. At all. To the point I must wonder if they were even playing Mass Effect at all.

...and anyone who tries to talk about what would be a "better" ending in the context of that glaring ignorance of the universe and its ongoing themes is just a bloody fool, regardless of how well-spoken they are.

Whatever ****.

Dark energy was the original planned ending, the current one sucks and is full of inconsistencies, holes, and just generally comes from out of nowhere. You can say reading the codex makes more sense of things to make yourself feel better if you want, but that doesn't make it true.

Exactly. It's been 37 millions years, and only the original Reaper, Harbinger, knows exactly how they came about. Just one brief conversation with Shepard along the lines of:

Harbinger: Your human mind demands answers, an explanation of what you face to help you conquer your fear of the unknown. I deny you that. Face your fears in us and in the darkness of ignorance.

From Karpyshyn's own Twitter account:

https://twitter.com/...282864288960512

"Dark Energy was on the table at one point, but the original idea for the ending was all about Reapers and Mass Relays."

The dark energy thing came from the Something Awful forums. Karpyshyn was asked about this because of that rumor. His response indicated that while dark energy was on the table, it was not in fact the "original planned ending" for Mass Effect 3.

Even if it was, it's still bad and for all the reasons I've articulated earler in this thread and more -- I have other posts on this very forum if you'd like me to repost them. And, like I said before if it was the original planned ending, being as bad as it was is it any wonder Karpyshyn was pulled from the project?

They should have gone with the simple premise that an evil being from a cybernetic dimension is experimenting on our own. That would be simple and cool.
