I started a 2WF-fighter and ask myself, why should I make this kind of fighter, when I can make a rogue with the same 2WF-talents but so many more complementary talents like the entire duelist-branch, lethality, evasion, etc. and of course the abilities backstab and stealth.

Perhaps I should mention, that I'm neither a min/maxer nor a DPS-fetishist. It is not so important for me, if my main inflicts X dmg, while (s)he could do X+Y, when I raise stat A and ignore stat B etc.

In my games I prefer versatile characters and because of this I like the idea of a "2WF-rogue-fighter/duelist/..."

I finsihed the game with a sword&board warrior/champion/berserker. So I know about the different specs of a fighter. I just like the ones of the rogue class a bit more

My questions:
Are there any serious reasons against a rogue who fills virtually the role of a fighter?
Are there any serious positive arguments for a 2WF-fighter?

I do not see the point either. its not like the Warrior Specializations compliment the style.

Maybe a dumb question, but I am clueless when it comes to Rogue play.....when doing backstab, do you actually have to be behind the enemy? I tried using Zevran, who comes with many Rogue Assassin talents, but I can't seem to use him effectively. What is the best way to use his talents, or in the future if I want to make a Rogue Character?

Yes to backstab, you have to be behind the enemy. Backstab is basically just a critical, plus extra stuff if you have talents.
You don't have to be directly behind the enemy. There is some leeway where you can be slightly sideways, and still backstab. There are circles at the enemy's feet, and around their back, the circle part is black in color. That is the backstab spot.

Also using poison is very effective.

The main difference is that later on in the game you can tank with your warrior, thus having 3 damage dealers+ healer. Where a rogue will need a tank. Not that a rogue can't take a few hits, but he needs the enemies to be looking the other way.

As a guy using a dw rogue with daggers and high cunning + lethality I'd say, sure there are some reasons to go dw fighter. To name a few they have several attacks that compliment tanking, can equip swords and axes with substantially longer reach than rogue daggers, and they still will have much faster dps (not faster than rogues but faster than both sword and board and 2hers). It's something like a difference between attacking every second and attacking every second and a half. Plus larger weapons have more damage output than daggers (with the roses thorn I think it's like 6.9 which is about teir 2-3 in swords).

For tanking, you lack defence and resistance (probably made up for with your high strength and some physical resistance items) but make up for it in crowd control with at least two moves that attack multiple enemies one of which has a really fast recharge and low stamina cost.

I'd say it's perfectly viable to use a dw warrior. Mileage may vary...

The big difference I found and why I converted from Rogue to Warrior is the ability to tank and take things head on.

The warrior gets a couple of nice things over the rogue a level 1 talent that makes armor less costly in stamina and this is coupled with more stamina. This allows you to use fatigue skills, ware heavy armor and still perform some attacks. This is important because as your character takes point in most fights they are going to be the one targetted (at least to start with) and so some tanking is really helpful.

Now I don't know the thief specs as well as I know the warrior ones but things like mental fortress incresing mental resistence and devour allowing you to heal yourself from the dead also help make your warrior just that little bit more useful.

And finally there are times when dual wielding you will be attacked things like dragon breath or whirlwind or massaive attack etc and at these times all the best laid plans don't work so well if your a low hp low armor duel wielder.

So when you are in position to backstab, and access the radial dial (XBOX) There will be circles and thats how you know you are in the position to pull off a backstab?

I've played two dual wielders, one a rogue (duelist/assassin), the other a warrior (berserker/templar). The warrior was far less squishy than the rogue. Beserk+Momentum is a rather brutal combination when it comes time to use whirlwind and sweep. The rogue was absolutely vicious and could down squishier targets (mages) very quickly.

Playstyle thing. I personally loved running into things headfirst and not blowing up right away.

Your character will perform a backstabbing if they are in flanking position and are able to do so (shield users late game cannot be flanked). You should see the targetting circle as well as a dark semicircle within it, usually stretching along their backside and their weak side (left because right hand is usually their main or shield.)

Berserk, momentum, dual wielding two longswords with three rune slots. Heavy armour. Reaver specialisation, or templar...

Being able to do monstrous amounts of damage and still stand up :).

All these things are good.

I took the 2h route on my warrior, it seemed like a natural choice for dealing damage when I know I'll roll rogue later and do the dw thing. It doesn't matter much, unless you're MMO minded and insist on maxing the non-existent meters out. They're viable, they're fun, run with it.

One word about survivability:
I have another rogue in her traditional role. She is a maxed duelist and has a defence over 100. Together with her evade ability and the better dragon leather set she still stands almost with full HP when Alistair as maxed shield-user and heavy armour wearer is about to go down, when he doesn't get the heal or the next pot in time.

I didn't put any points in 2WF except one for the first ability in the first row.
Sure, she does not inflict as much damage, when she is not in a backstab position, but for that she can use her basic rogue stun and two of the duelist attacks.

In other words: I do not have the impression, that she is "squishy", since she has all the duelist's and all rogue talents.

Next question would be, for what I'd need a second tank? Even if there would be the need, I could go with Alistair and Shale, my rogue and a mage.
If I had a 2WF fighter, I'd have me, Alistair, Leliana (rogue) and a mage.
Isn't that six of one and half a dozen of another? :)

Dual wielding with a warrior is fun and the only real problem is that you waste a skill slot (that shield...). Maxed dual wielding, warrior, templar and berserker for max fun. Plus the two best long swords out there with runes.

Eager to try a different and more soft approach to two weapong fighting.

@Veracruz

If you choose City Elf Warrior you start off with points in 2WF
