That's a whole other beef, but I see the two intertwined often (that is, endings are bad due to tone/theme and endings are bad due to just not making any sense). I'm definitely in both camps, but I was talking about only the first idea before (i.e. going after the people who just want dark endings, which I've seen on the forums, thinking it's the only way to end ME).
I think what would have worked best is fine, just cop to using the Cruicble as the savior superweapon macguffin of ME3, but not an overwhelmingly powerful one. Then activating it, combined with how many forces you were able to muster, dictates the whole spectrum of either losing to the reapers, winning but scortching earth with high casualties, etc. all the way to, given the circumstances, a decent victory. Everyone gets their outcomes of choice, with a minimum of plot holes. Along with a decent epilogue.
What bothers me is that broad ideas like what I just outlined are SIMPLER than bringing in starchild and the RBG choices...adding more layers of complexity onto a story at the VERY end rarely works out well...
I agree. I think it would have been better if the Crucible was just a weapon that downed the Reaper's shields, which seemed to be the biggest issue in taking them down. Then, your readiness level determines whether you're able to win or lose in the end, with different choices through the games determining how it happens. Saved the Rachni in the beginning? They help manage to hold off a wave of attacks that would have killed a team mate. Destroyed the Collector Base, but saved the Destiny Ascension? Well, you lose half your forces here because you don't have both ships to protect them (or you save most of them if you spared both, or lose them all if you destroyed both).
So many unfulfilled possibilities.
