So I've read some spoliers on Merrill and her dark quests. I read that
if you refuse to help her with her dark plans, she becomes a rival ASAP.
But I also read that once you get a companion at 100%, either way, they
get "locked in".

Sooooooo, what happens if you are at 100%
friendship with Merrill before you start her quests and refuse her? She
can't technically become a rival because she is locked in at 100%
freindship... or can she?

Sorry if this question has been asked
before. I did a few searches but can't find the keyword combo that gave
me a thread with the answers.

thanks!

I haven't tried it, but I assume she's stay at 100% friendship.

I think the idea is that you only would get her to 100% friendship if you supported her beliefs and were nice to her the entire game. So if you're that type of Hawke, why would you refuse to help her in her personal quest?

Unless you're just trying to break the game, in which case, you would have succeeded,

I agree with BubbleDncr. There is no sense in exploiting game glitches . You will be not satisfied yourself at the end.

Friendship indeed locks at 100%.

She stays at 100 % friendship. Merrill is perhaps the simplest person to get 100 % friendship with so in my experience it happens naturally in Act 1 if you bring her along and you're nice to people. The Feynriel quest alone gets you something like 50 points if you play it out in a way Merrill likes.

I rivaled Merrill on a Hawke that helped her with her quest and befriended her with a Hawke that did not. It creates issues with dialogue. It's especially odd and glaring in the former case because giving her the tool only gets you a handful of friendship points and can easily be done on the rivalry path but if you do Merrill will occasionally act as if you sided with the Keeper against her even though you did not.

ok, thanks for the clarifications! I do not want to exploit any holes in the game.

On a side topic, I don't like how once you get 100%, it locks in. That should not be possible. If you max out but then do some negative things, it is only natural that you'd lose friendship (and vice-versa). The Merrill issue is a good example.

If they're going to have a maximum then it needs to lock. Because if you're no longer getting credit for all the good things you're doing, you shouldn't lose out because you did something that they disapprove.

Plus, if after finally getting Fenris to 100 Rivalry so that for once I won't have to end up killing him, he then doomed himself by giving me +15 friendship for telling Charade to see her father, I'd go stark raving crazy. If I haven't already.

I'd wholly approve of the lock-in if it were accompanied by appropriate actions and reactions on the part of the party members in question, like, if Merrill was more surprised and betrayed if you refused to help her at maximum friendship than she would if you were more neutral about it. And stuff.

Well I like Merrill overall and support MOST of her mage friendly opinions... except one. I can't support that one. No way. So I know I will drop friendship points like a rock when that comes up. But until then, I am gaining a lot of friendship points and I'm still in act 1. I'll have to actually stop using her simply to not risk gaining any more points (to avoid the lock-in) without forcing myself to be intentionally mean to her. Kinda ridiculous actually...

Yeah, that or one you get 100% friend, don't lock it but have it so that it is doubly harder to lose friendship points (cut rivalry points gained in half) until you get back to neutral. Think of it as because you maxed out, they give you the benefit of the doubt for awhile.

But total locked-in makes no sense. I can't image locking in Anders at 100% friends and then start to sell out all mages by helping templars and such. NO way Anders would still see me at 100%. No way.

having encounted this very issue I can tell you how it works out.

If you don't give her the tools and are locked into Friendship then the game assumes you gave her the tools. When it comes up in act three she acts like you handed them over.

So basically you support the blood mage until she actually uses her blood magic...?

When I realized how far she would go with it. I know she is a blood mage but my goal is to help turn her away from it. But the more aggressively she pursues it, and thinks it will be ok, the more I will fight her on it.

I'm not automatically anti-blood mage all the time. For example I was sympathic to Jowan and wished his life to be spared. I spared that blood mage during the broken circle quest when she feels things went too far and she seemed remorseful. But Merrill is going deeper into the pit and I need to fight her on this.

If you want to fight her using blood magic, rivalry it is. Friendship means you condone what she is doing.
