It was like: "So this is it. One of the greatest trilogies in gaming ends with a scene that looks like it has been written by a moderately-talented fan fiction author. At least I understand now, why people were so angry about the ending".

I remain sceptical that DLC can fix this. But after running around in my flat in confusion and spending a few hours on various websites and in these forums, I realized that Mass Effect 1 was probably as close as possible to what I wish computer RPGs would be, and that probably most of my emotional attachment to the series results from that game. Retrospectively, the feeling of being part of such an enormous adventure in an unexplored galaxy never fully returned after Mass Effect 1.

Mass Effect 2 (and to some degree also Mass Effect 3) had their bright moments, the game mechanics have definitely been refined until now, and production has become better and better ... but somehow I now realize that my expectations were probably too high and that most of them were just wishful thinking. Maybe computer games are just not ready for the rich kinds of interaction you find in pen and paper RPGs (with a good group and game master).

Maybe, at some point in the future, it will become clear why all this has happened. I would be interested in Bioware's rationales for the current plot design, even if I do not plan to come back to the Mass Effect universe.

knowing the rage going throughout the community I tried to brace for the endings but even so I was angry.

I was thinking to myself after a while though that  this must be the bad ending or I screwed up somewhere. 

What a terrible way to end a trilogy.

I thought the white light on the elevator meant I was dying, so I was like... "Well, that's a bummer, I wonder how they'll pull this off without Shepard for the last stretch." But, oh no! They weren't done yet.

Then I was so bitter after talking to the Catalyst, I got the achievement for finishing it and shut the game off. I tried to do it again the next day to get a different ending. But no. I then whined to my friends who hadn't finished the game so they looked up a guide online, and then they read "Shepard lives" if you get 4,000. So I spent an hour on that multiplayer getting my EMS up and then I got the breath scene.... And that was when the rage started.

Edit: Not that Shepard living would make it or break it for me. It's just that I was holding out hope that it would totally change the ending since the gameFAQs said their were 16 distinct endings. I thought, "So this one must be lower on the suckage right? Since I need more EMS? RIGHT?!?"
