@numerous cranky femSheps that surfaced in the thread.
Wow, disgruntled gamers + yy chromsome = frighteningly large walls of text.
You could criticize for gender-selection not being given as an option in RPGs, but games like Witcher and well Witcher 2 also benefited from the fact that the gender was not changeable. In fact the character wasn't customizable at all. Geralt was his own character, and the fact that he wasn't open to customizations at all, allowed the developers to delve deeper into the characterization of Geralt and provide more options without having to worry about what his female counterpart would/wouldn't do. While seemingly taking the control away from the player, it actually also gives developers more freedom to tell different stories and provide more options.
Aside from Witcher, why exactly do you guys feel that you can't have as much fun playing as a male? Is it a role-player's dilemma? (if it is, it's probably me that just 'dont get it') Or is it just the idea of not being given the choice?Maybe it's my handicap at 'role-playing' as a character, but I personally can't ever seem to bring myself to 'role-play' as a male Shepard before getting frustrated with the limited dialogue options and a strong level of cognitive disonnance from the character having his own distinctive voice (not just literally but personality wise as well). Every ME game, I will try to make a male Shep that looks like me, and a couple hours later just delete him and wind up using the default Shepard face for an 'a**-hole Shep' playthrough (inspired by those 'Shepard is an A**hole' vids on YouTube).
I personally feel like Mass Effect games are less of an RPG than it really is just a videogame version of a 'choose your adventure' book (and probably why I don't get bored with them like I do with Bethesda games).
Shepard more or less comes premade as a character, and all you get to do is decide how he looks and which of the three given personalities/voices he/she will be. I believe what really draws you in and also what's one of the great things (or it used to be) about Bioware games, is that instead of just letting you roleplay they only really just let you choose WHAT stories are told to you and HOW they're told you (thorugh the player character, the narrative device). And until that abysmal ending, they did a damn good job at it.
And for those reasons, I can play Femsheps just fine, and perhaps even have a better time than playing a customized male shep (what's the point of customizing if you can't truly 'role play' the character?). If anything creating that obvious level of cognitive disonance between me and the player character (in that she has boobs), helps me get into the story better and enjoy Shepard as a character of her own. And the fact that I can make my female narrative device look like Rosie O'Donnell or Shirley Manson is just gravy on top.
I dunno, just a thought from the other side.
