How I would've done it... (spoilers, and wall of text)

So... Lots of free time, a vivid imagination (oh well, I can dream can't I?) and a love for the series has resulted in this. I've not read the books, comics, whathaveyou... so my ideas are only based on what I've learnt from the games. Therefor I'm sorry if I've made any massive mistakes regarding the lore.

So first, changes to the overall plot…

First: Get rid of The Crucible! The way to win the war is to have the galaxy united. But
the idea of having prothean tech save the day is quite nice. Not just a massive
“weapon” – make it so that you equip the ships with prothean weaponry (similar
to the weapon you get in From Ashes – but you know, made for huge ships). This
will even make for nice red vs. green beams in cinematics haha. Also other prothean
tech could be useful to find (better shields, more powerful biotics, etc.). I
got this idea from what Javik says in dialogue: they lost because they weren’t
diverse and The Reapers “figured them out”… But a united galaxy, with all the
unique races (just with better, prothean, tech) could put up a fight. So to sum
up: The Reapers haven’t faced a united galaxy like this one before, so uniting
the races is the way to win. And with prothean tech you get weapons that can
match The Reapers’.

Second: Tone down Cerberus. They’ve had their time in ME 1 & 2. Also, I would’ve
made them even more controlled by The Reapers. Keep them to side-missions
(except for the mission on Mars, where you find out their soldiers are
basically a form of Husks). Even though they think they’re fighting The
Reapers, they’re building them an army (“Build me an army, worthy of Mordor!”
anyone?). Also they can be used as strike-teams by The Reapers, to sabotage and
hunt for prothean data before Shepard gets to it. So they’ll still be an enemy –
but the real threat of the game is The Reapers (like the difference between
mercs and Collectors in ME2).

Third: No spacekid! Make Harbinger the leader of The Reapers. ME1 had Saren and
Sovereign, and I kind of missed having the “big bad guy at the end” in ME2. It’s
a game, and entertainment, a big bad villain is a good thing (it’s like having
Star Wars, with Sith but without The Emperor… or Starcraft with Zerg but no
Kerrigan. Doesn’t work)!

Now for some game-play changes!

Firstly,
and most importantly, CHOICES! Have us make some hard choices (weren’t really
any in ME3 IMO). For example: “do I go to help save asari from Thessia or do I
attack Cerberus Headquarters before they manage to do X?” (but not enough time to
do both). So it’s basically choices between weakening the enemy and making your
side stronger. And also, let us see these choices play out. To continue my
earlier example: if you chose to assault Cerberus, you get a short cinematic of
Thessia being overrun and the asari leaders getting blown up (maybe also get a
conversation where you have to convince Liara that you did the right thing). If
it’s a war you should have to make hard choices and sacrifices. Could even make
it so that “you can help evacuate this colony, or leave them to their fate –
but doing so will slow down The Reapers, giving you time to do X instead”.

I would also have liked to see more war. A few missions felt like you took part in a
war (saving the students I really liked, for example). Hackett does say that
you should be the tip of the spear – so make us go take the fight to The Reapers
in different ways. Like possibly destroying a Reaper to help establish a
landing zone for when Krogan reinforcements arrive at Palaven. And also let us
take part in those big fights! Even if it’s another “laser The Reaper so the fleet
can focus fire on it” (with the entire Turian fleet opening fire on it)… I
thought I’d get to fight next to (some of) the War Assets I acquired – not just
see them turn into numbers. Especially I was just waiting for my chance to
fight next to the Krogan on Palaven… Now, the Quarian and Geth bit I really
thought had a lot more potential when it comes to consequences. For example:
Geth cyber-warfare with The Reapers… Or just hooking Shepard (and eventually
other organics) up to it, and letting him/her battle a Reaper in cyberspace.

I have a ton of other ideas as well, but figured this post has gone on long enough… Just
want to finish with ideas about Shepard’s death. If you’re dead set on killing
Shepard, make it a heroic sacrifice… Like telling the others to get to safety
while he/she runs in to detonate the nuke that kills Harbinger. I’d have hoped
for an ending in the style of DA:O – die, sacrifice your friend, or don’t play
by the rules (which is what Shepard has done in the previous games) and save
everyone. Now, I don’t mind Shepard getting killed – but I really didn’t like
the way it played out in ME3… Just imagine if you get a cinematic with Liara
standing at a statue of Shepard saying something like “this was our greatest
hero… this was your father/mother” (given that she was your LI of course) to a
little blue baby. Now that’d been an ending! And one that probably would’ve
made me cry. Just don’t end it with everything (well almost) getting killed… If
you played Arrival, you know what happens if you blow up a Mass Relay.

So, if you read this far – I congratulate you, and would like your thoughts. Just keep it
civil, please.

Hmm... Noticed that something weird happened when I copied in the text. Should be sorted now. Also bump.
