I loved this game, but I had a rough time with the combat at first. It would have been nice to have an optional tutorial near the beginning. Something along the lines of Alistair saying, "Hey, you're new to the Grey Wardens. Would you like some tips on handling combat with multiple party members."
I felt this way for several reasons:
1. I was playing on Xbox, which with the controller and the persepective gives you the initial impression that you're playing an action RPG.
2. I've never played WoW, which I hear has a similar combat style.
3. Previous to this game, I played Oblivian, Mass Effect, Fable 2, and Fallout 3. All of which seem to be more action oriented (i.e. clicking the button causes your character to attack rather than queue an attack).
4. Yes, I did read the manual, but it didn't really clarify things. Especially how to properly freeze the game and issue specific orders to everyone.
I ended up learning everything by trial and error. There were some battles that I had to reload and try again ten or fifteen times. The worst thing was, I was level 20 when I figured out that I could order my party to hold position.
After I figured everything out, I thought the combat was a lot of fun. But a tutorial would have made my first play through a lot more enjoyable.
I would have appreciated a combat tutorial.

Ya i suppose in many ways the first play through is a tutorial
I think on my third i may play the same race and class as i did on my first just to make a few different choices, the end game had some hard decisions to be made

They probably felt that the simplistic and intuative combat system didn't warrant a tutorial, but that the Origins were supposed to ease you into it.

I guess the combat didn't seem intuative to me. On the Xbox, you have to pull and hold the left trigger, select a party member with the bumpers, select a target with the d-pad, and then execute a skill or spell using the analog stick and the A button. That procedure wasn't obvious to me at first. Once I figure it out and got good at it, no problem.
As for the Origins, I didn't think they eased you into the combat at all. I played through all the origins just managing my main character and letting party members run with their default AIs. I didn't start figuring out tactics until I was surrounded by enemies and facing down several yellows and an orange.

The irony is that it's kinda too complicated for a tutorial.
But, you're right, they should have done more to ease people into it. Maybe tutorial videos like Madden ("hey, let's learn to use tactics! Boom!").
