I'm actually surprised that there is so much support for BioShock 2's ending in here.

I had always considered it to be an extremely underrated sequel. Good to see other people share my opinion.

And yes, the ending to that game was a very nice bittersweet...

Personally one of my favourite bittersweet endings was from the first Freespace game. As you destroy the Shivan Super Destroyer Lucifer, the detonation from its engines destroys the jump node to earth cutting the system off from the rest of the galaxy and the human/vasudan colonies.

MGS3 had a real bittersweet ending; the ending of ME3 is just soul-crushingly depressing.

Probably the best ending in gaming history.  No doubt the best ending in the franchise.

Final Fantasy 10. It was sad, not a surprise and made sense.  It was so bittersweet the sequel was pretty much one of the characters really hoping she could find or bring back Titus. And she never did.

You need to feel it. While Nier did it in a Meta way, I must say that my Bioshock 2 ending(Hardest difficulty, Vita Chambers off, Harvested little sisters to survive but hated doing it, spared everyone else) was personally the most emotional and bittersweet moment in any form of media. The look on her face when I pushed away that needle...

Probably the most emotionally impactful ending to a game I've ever seen.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I am so tired of the whole messiah-complex in game narratives. It's been done so many times it has zero impact for me.

I like that some people posted red dead redemption. As a western game the ending fit with the tropes of that genre, and it also fit well with the themes of the game. Great example.

This might sound incredibly stupid to some, but I honestly felt that Gears of War 3 had a proper, bittersweet ending. Not trying to say that Gears of War is the pinnacle of deep, thoughtful and thematic storytelling in video games, but its ending did provide closure and explanation and did remember that bittersweet means equal parts of the two words not just mostly bitter with a hint of sweetness i.e. a species was made extinct and has been all but destroyed, but now humanity is secure and can safely look towards the future with hope and rebuild. Just thought I'd contribute to the thread. Hope it wasn't dumb.

I always thought the ending to Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines was interesting. Jack packing the sarcophagus with explosives and then hanging out with the corpse as he watches LaCroix's penthouse suite get blown to smithereens might not be bittersweet unless you side with LaCroix, but it's definately entertainment of the morbid kind.

Screenshot linked because 1600x900.

Oh, don't give me those looks. Without Noble 6's last stand, the original Halo trilogy (and 4-6) wouldn't have happened. S/he gave his/her life so that MC and the Pillar of Autumn could high-tail it off of Reach.

Might want to play FFX-2 again.  You are wrong, or you just didn't have a high enough completion because you rushed the game.

Since everyone has already said Torment, I'll say Persona 3:

Get some:      4/4, you can watch the other 3 if you want.

Persona 4 as well.  There's thousands of others, Japanese games don't even like happy endings so the list of bittersweet endings is endless.  Bittersweet can be done right, and it's not that hard.

I wouldn't say not 100%ing an rpg is rushing, but you are correct.  I didn't ever get that ending or see it.  Not in the habit of researching every game I beat 10 years ago is my defense.
