I wonder why?  Are the professional critics smarter than we are?  Or are they just paid shills for the gaming industry.  Discuss.

Yep. Other non-gaming-press reviewers have loved ME3. I won't bother to give you links since you know this already.

Take a look at those, and then their own reports on games, and then see how they almost always say the same exact things that the others did... generalyl meaning they more or less copy and pasted without effort due to getting hits on their websites or magazines purchased.

I usually only read Schiesel in the NYTimes. Haven't seen him be wrong about something yet, though he likes more genres than I do.

Of course, the real reason I believe the positive reviews is that I would give ME3 a very high rating myself, were I to review it. YMMV.

You mean the guys that get paid for reviewing it and host ME3 ads on their site?
Or the dozens of cases where "professional" reviewers were caught taking bribes?

Oh please, IGN just posted "mass effect 3, second opinion" where a bunch of their writers trash the game. problem is, it doesn't look like any of them played the game, but more likely just watched the ending on youtube. One of them wrote: "I don't understand why I have to watch these cutscene with these charecters I never met before". those charecters he was refering to include joker and anderson, possibly shepard, and probably some of his new squadmembers like javik/edi/james. which makes me think they just grabbed a bunch of people who never played a ME game, probably their RTS guy and sports game guy, and platformer guy and whatsnot, and forced them watch the ending on youtube and maybe some gameplay video.

Personally I think it boils down to a large difference in how reviewers approach games and gaming. If I played several different games a day I'd soon prize 'novelty' over anything else too.

These are the same people who prized DA2's 'unique' aesthetic over themuch better (IMO) but classical/generic aesthetic of DAO. The ending of ME3 revolts gamers who spent hours focussed on the lore and the emotional experience of ME1 and 2. But critics are rushing through to complete as fast as possible to meet a deadline. They don't have the same emotional connection, or attention to lore. These things are, comparatively speaking, not what they are looking for in their game. Likewise, long games that offer 80+ hours of gameplay frustrate them because they don't have the time to play them through so they adore games that are shorter and that let them move onto the next game in their list. Complex inventory management doesn't appeal to them in their rush to get onto the next game in their list, simplified, streamlined works for their agenda.

Add to all that the conflict of interest from advertising dollars and not needing to pay for their own copies, and it all boils down to a markedly different appreciation for various sets of features.

Regardless, I decided to never again pay attention to professional game reviewers after DA2. They simply don't reflect my subjective tastes for it to be worthwhile. About the only thing I find helpful in them are screenshots, video, and a description of the gameplay. Liking or disliking the game is a subjective thing and I prefer to listen to feedback from other gamers who like the same kinds of features that I do.

I question your logic with 42 plotholes as stage 1 of my counter to your rating.

Pro reviewers are in the pocket of big game developers due to advertising with them. Forbes has already sited that honest bias reviewers have been fired because of game developers pressuring the parent companies to take action against them, in favor of a inflated review.

critics ,reviewers alike (i.e. Colin Moriarty) are bought and paid for. They'll say anything to get you to believe otherwise, hoping you're an incredulous 9 year old. They don't understand the true gaming demographic. Nne of those critics could've been fans  or ven players of the entire franchise. I'm a 45 year old professional, who has played video games since Atari was in the arcades. They are all just clueless and have lost all credability with gaming fans.

Actually, Erik Kain only speculates and even says there may be something to it but it's not universal, and is just exploring the option.

What bothers me about the line I keep hearing from angry fans is the idea that everyone at the big gaming sites must be hopelessly corrupt, toeing the corporate line for each big game that hits retail shelves. I understand that this is first and foremost a sign of loss of trust between fans and journalists. That loss of trust is actually a symptom of a larger and deeper lack of trust between the gaming industry and its consumer base.

But I don’t think we’re being fair to label anyone in the gaming media as corporate stooges out to make a buck. This is the sort of narrative simplification of the Other that turns us off to bad storylines in games.

And David Their actually is telling all of you to stop thinking conspiracy theories in this post.

http://www.forbes.co...n-to-companies/

But to say that because others don’t feel the same way, that makes them biased or paid-off, I don’t think that’s fair. I owe nothing to the other writers and editors from these larger sites. I personally don’t know them and I’m not a part of their “club.” But I don’t think we need to trash an entire industry based on a few rogue instances of malfeasance.

Fans, respect that sometimes journalists will have different opinions than you, and this does not make them paid stooges for gaming companies. Journalists, respect your fans’ contrasting opinions and try to learn why they feel the way they do, rather than mock them for their views.

So, I see both men actually telling you folk to calm down and stop spewing this "paid off" garbage.

A very good reason why we shouldn't listen to so-called "professional game critics", they might bash a good game simply because it has a few minor glitches or "repetitive gameplay", which is a common excuse.

Gamers do not pay for content on a gaming journalist site. Publishers pay for advertising space. If publishers don't like the way their product is represented, they can cancel advertising contracts, not offer previews, and withold review copies.

There's really no mystery here on how this works, and why it works the way it does. Gaming Journalism is a joke, They don't review games, the review advertisers, the score they give games is directly related to whether or not an advertiser has a contract with a site, and what score the advertiser expected the game to receive.

I really don't understand why people continue to act like "Gaming journalists" aren't dishonest.

To be honest i have never seen a review that intentionally spoils the ending. That would be bad reviewing tbh. But with an ending this bad i would have expected something along the lines of: The ending leaves a lot to be desired.

Pro critics reviewed the game as a Whole.

fans gave bad marks on a 40 hours game, because of a rubbish 5 minutes.

look at Angry Joe. he gave the game a solid 8 out of t10, he still hated this ****ing ending.

Y'know, I've finally twigged it. Fans wanted it to be Mass Effect, critics want it to be nothing more than an entertaining game. It's an exceedingly entertaining game, but it is a sporadically a little lean with what fans know and love about Mass Effect.

Trolls appear to be on both sides from what I've seen at least. Then again I'm just a lurker.
