My female Human Noble was thrust into her Grey Wardens role following a catastrophic set of events in her home.  My female City Elf survived a hard-scrabble, dirt-poor, 2nd-class citizen upbringing, culminating with the brutal ending to a day she had never wanted in the first place.  Each woman survived trauma that would break most people. Each went on to be strong, level-headed, compassionate leaders.

But they weren't just leaders.  Each made a genuine attempt to understand each party member's lifestory and even tried to be a friend to some of them (except Oghren who is just flat-out disgusting).   Each routinely gave gifts, some mundane, others more sentimental.  Each spent time actively listening to their companions' stories, then searched out gifts that specifically touched those companions' hearts.  A flower that reminded the recipient of Mama.  A pair of gloves that reminded the recipient of Mama.  An amulet which reminded the recipient of... Mama.  (hmmmm lots of Mama gifts, but that's a different post, I think).

And yet, it didn't seem to be reciprocated.  Perhaps I missed it but it seemed that while everyone was delighted to receive gifts, no one offered any (one flower excepted). Companions told my characters sad stories of their pasts (granted, in many cases, my characters had asked) and my characters were avid listeners, lending an empathetic ear, offering a shoulder to cry on when needed, providing a word of encouragement.  Yet my characters were rarely asked about their own pasts or how they ended up as a Warden.  For my City Elf, her own love interest (Alistair) didn't know a highly significant aspect of her life before Wardens until very, very late and he only learned of it via a passing comment from someone else.  It was a fact he really should have known by this point in their relationship, if he cared for her as much as he said he did.

Anyway, romance is all fine and good but where is the platonic affection?  Wynne occasionally provides motherly advice (often in the form of lectures) but when my character is scared, who provides words of encouragement?  When she's sad, who allows her to cry on their shoulder?  Additionally, most of the time, my characters had to initiate the conversations.  People didn't just come up to her to ask "How are you holding up, dear?"  When entering Denerim for the first time after her traumatic departure, no one even bothered to ask City Elf, "Are you ok with this?" (for the record, she was petrified but I guess she didn't show it :D).

And where are the hugs?

I hear you a bit on that, no matter the origin your PC goes through some horrible stuff all of which include having to lose friends/family and pretty much their entire life up until that point. Yet no one really seems to care about the fact that your whole world just got shattered, in fact on several occasions Alistair outright forgot that my human noble's family was murdered just a few weeks prior.

About the only time your companions really comment on all the pain your PC has from the origin story is during the sacred ashes quest when the guardian asks about your past.

Instead of Dragon Age, maybe the D should stand for "Depressing"?

Its pretty typical though that the main PC is the one who gets to support everyone else in the adventure and take on everyone else's burden while also shouldering their own.

Not saying I like it, just that that's usually the way it is.

Yes, its a shame that bioware havent quite grasped this yet. it would be awesome if you were asked loads of questions by party members who showed sympathy for you and sometimes didnt have to take the lead and all the nasty decisions. Please think on this bioware, it would be so much more immersive.

You're the leader, your morale greatly effects those around you. Luckily, the game has stripped you of any semblance of lacking confidence.

What about the Archdemon? he has one long origin where his friends are killed constantly then he is killed off by some sadist with a sword.

Even if the PC is a mage, they go out of their way to kill him with a sword.

Rough day.

There's more to Oghren than what meets the eye. He's my favourite companion, because he's so friendly. He too, has a messed up past and he seldom complains about it. From time to time, you may notice that he's a bit troubled. You can ask if somethings wrong but he doesn't want to talk about it. He does admit a few things if you get his approval high enough. It was when I took him to the gauntlet that I felt sorry for him, and ever since then I've had him in my party. He likes to fight, after all. No other companion made me feel so good as Oghren did. <3 Oghren

and also, yeah it'd be fun if origins played a bigger part in the game. When I returned to the alienage I was suprised that none of my companions commented anything, you didn't even get to introduce them to your father.

You know, this could be a great idea for a mod, though the problem would be that we don't have the voice actors for giving additional dialogue to the companions.

I completely agree with you OP, I thought the same for my human noble and the lack of reaction of the party.

I think the point is, it's lonely at the top. No matter how badly you'd like it not to be, if you want friends and fellowship, stay off the top rungs of the ladder. Any ladder. Being the best/top/leader of anything makes you a target for your enemies, and you never really know who your friends are. In real life and in game. You want a shoulder to cry on? Um....stay out of leadership.

a lot of the characters use their attitude to cover up their past most of them have had bad past or done something they regretted.

Thats the sort of DLC I wouldnot feel bad about buying - even if it meant going through the game again. It would be cool if your Origin meant more. I was really bummed about my Dalish one. I was hoping for something a little more interesting involving Tamlin but he shows up, I kill him, then we moooovvve on.

Hence why modern A-frame ladders have the warning label at the top "Do NOT stand on or above this step"... Or maybe why the violent character keeps telling you to get a ladder?  :?

But I actually agree with this.  The leader is basically the keystone in the arch, the lower stones support you but if you waiver too much the whole arch comes crumbling down.

Actually, a fairly common complaint about BG2 was how often (along with the timing) your companions would just start talking about whatever. I personally enjoyed it (and thought non-romance characters should talk more), but maybe that had a factor.

Play through as a Dalish.... Lots of dialogue dealing with being Dalish... You also get to answer lots of questions with lines like... "I'm Dalish, I don't understand your human ways" But it kind of fell apart when I got to the alienage and the game seemed to all of a sudden think I was a city elf or something.. Lots of dialogue pertaining to situations that I really had no clue about.

I find it a bit hilarious in this game that Dog is the only one who reciprocates the gift giving.  Though close second for moral support is Wynne.  I didn't find her too preachy, but she was the only one trying to bolster you instead of the other way around.  Perhaps that's why she's become my favorite character as time passes.  I would have liked to have the option to give her a hug.

Anyway,
/hug.

Please accept a /hug from me as well. As Grey Wardens we're supposed to be self-sacrificing and emotional mountains others look to for inspiration and assistance. Little do they know we have our own emotional scars and insecurities.

I tried to play the game so that the recent events in Denerim (as a city elf) had left me, well, pretty damn moody. Not to mention my character regretted her decision at the end of the origin story. I was being mean and snarky to everybody but that really just made everyone hate me... Nobody ever came up to me and ask how I'm doing.

The game has lots of dialogue linked to the relationships you have with the other companions, so I think it would be most fitting if they sometimes paid attention to you as well and you would get the chance to say what's on your mind.
