You're right, of course. As a Grey Warden and as basically the Leader of the Ferelden GWs (LFGW), I suppose it falls to my character to be the rock. To be the glue holding it all together. Still, certainly even the staunchest of heroes has brief moments of doubt or tiny micro-seconds of trepidation. And, at least in my characters' cases, they did not spend their lifetimes aspiring to be LFGW. It was a role they just sort of assumed because, well, someone had to.

It's funny that you mentioned Dog's gifts. I hadn't even thought of that! Of course, I rarely used Dog, so he just sat at camp. With or without a bone, Dog was always happy to see me and offered 100% unconditional love. Isn't that sweet? The few times I did take him along, Dog brought some... interesting... gifts. Dirty undies? I guess it's the thought that counts. Wonder what he was thinking when he brought those?

In any event, having read your responses (and I appreciate them, thanks!), I feel a massive /grouphug coming on... gather round, folks!

I agree that given the fact that our characters actually have some history, it would be nice if some of the NPCs would get a bit more involved and ask about it.

Still, I'm a boy, my character's a boy I'd probably just dodge there questions anyway ;).

Nevertheless /hug.

You know reading this, that sort of makes Cailen's death even more depressing. I think he was the only one who ever asked about my character, who they were, he showed shock and horror at my noble's story and instantly promised to support me and in another origin was very distressed that my city elf cousin was raped by a human noble. He was over eager and a bit naive, but you know... he really did care enough to ask.

Hugs all around and a toast to the King...

I played as a Dalish and my Character didn't want to leave her clan at all and was literally forced to go. She was very much taken from everything and everyone she knew and then was made to be in charge of saving the country due to Alistairs totally refusal to. Which is why I got irked when Alistair shouted at me. It would have turned into a right lovers tiff if the game gave me the option xD But no one really seemed care that most things were alien to her.

While I like the origins, it would be nice if they had more of an impact on the game, or how the npcs treated you beyond the rare "You're an elf" comments.

/hug

It was hilarious that the Mad Old Hermit was more interested in my own history than any of my friends and companions.

He had that same infectious charm that his father had which made everyone love him in the novel "The Stolen Throne"

Passion and idealism can indeed be charming. Those romancing Alistair should mention that :P "Hey babe, I met your brother for 5 MINUTES and he already asked more about me then you'

Thank you for the post, my poor Dalish girl felt the same way. Alone and alien running around Ferelden on a mission of a group she barely knows about "The GreyWardens." She did it in the hopes that the Dalish (and her clan) would get some recognition. Alistair romances her, and wins her over, before Zev was introduced. Leliana was a turn-off, she was too clue-less about Elves.

My greatest issue with the romance was that Alistair, who initiates and is careful about his own emotional health and taking things to a physical level, doesn't realize that it is the same for my PC. She is Dalish, they BOND for life. They live for longer periods that humans and seem to pair for life. She is new to all of it, just like him, and he never gets curious about it, and neither am I given any dialog choices to express her emotional state. She never even shares how she had lost her 'boyfriend' and became tainted herself, prior to her recruitment.

I don't know, Alistair does strike up a conversation with you, just after redciffe I think, where he tries to cheer you up by telling you stories of the other grey wardens. Trying to assure you, in his own charming if clumsy way, that a Grey Wardens life isn't all death and destruction. I found that pretty touching.

If you ask Morrigan if Flemeth is really what she seems and your a Human Noble she can ask about your mother in return. If you say she was murdered/died very recently Morrigan can respond with something along the lines of: "For what it's worth you have my condolences"...

...which is a heleva lot better than Alistair flat up forgetting that little detail :D

I thought that being exposed to humans lowered the elves life expectancy to human levels, in the past they were immortal though.  Anyway as a Grey Warden it's 30 years.

However if any my companions started asking questions about my character's past or pestering him about how he was holding up, I would want the option to behead him/her and tell the rest that's what will happen to them if they keep asking questions.  Some people like to keep things bottled up.

I really hate when companions make interjections in RPGs.  We're in a dungeon surrounded by enemies and could be ambushed at any time and you pick now for a heart to heart!?

I couldn't agree more!! My character spent the whole time acting as a Private Detective, Family Guidance Councillor, Career Advisor, Social Worker, Charity Worker, Crisis Volunteer, Policewoman, and only bloody saviour of the land and did the love of her life sit her down by the fire, put his arm around her shoulders and say 'how are you bearing up, love?'. No he bloody did not! He mainly cracked daft jokes and tried to snog her a lot! *mutters* oaf!

I interpreted that bit as 30 years AFTER your Joining, so if you join at 25, you MAY make it to 55.  There's no way Duncan is under 30 years old.  Too grizzled looking.

You've got a good point there, LordP.  If your companions initiate a conversation, one of your options SHOULD be "None of your durned business!!!"  (for you mean-spirited, grumpy types ).  Especially if you're neck-deep in darkspawn.  I'd hope they'd have enough sense to start heart-to-hearts when we're back in camp but you never know.

No one care about you

You're the Warden.. You're made of stone .. You're here to save the world and all of your companion..You're jesus.

i laughed my ass off when Allistair told the PC - GOOD riddance if you ask me ... even if you romanced her... I wanted to smack him in the face after all i have done for him.

It is part of your hardening, this game is setting you up (to help a lot of younger players, well under 20). It shows you that being kind and considerate is pointless unless you only expect the reward to be the sence of smug self satisfaction you get from helping someone else, particularly when they didn't actually pop up to you and start to speak to you about anything.

It teaches you that ultimately everyone is self serving and you should be the same, the boards are full of peeps asking how to get so and so's quest, so they want the xp and couldn't really give a dam about the story, others just want the sex scene, biware has tought these peeps a valuable life lesson, right down to Morrigan using emotion pressure over leaving or getting her own way on the ritual.

There are actually a few places where the NPC's do ask about you during conversations, the queries are fairly minor but the do allow you to express more about your character. When discussing Antiva Zevran asks you about where you grew up, there is a conversation with Alistair about where home is (beware, if you are trying to be friends it will put you right back on the "love" path to tell him "home is with the grey wardens now, with you" even if you intended to relay a best friends message). Wynne asks about your experience with Jowan if you play the mage origin. Leliana seems to have trouble percieving elves as people and you can converse with her about that if you are playing an elf.

It would be nice to have more PC specific conversation but the dev's commented on this way back when the game was still in development. There is a great deal of difficulty in writing dialog for the player to express how their PC feels because everyone interprets their PC a little differently. I think they have tried to do what they can (this game still has some of the best dialog yet). Hopefully there will be more in the future. I personally would like more NPC initiated conversation in camp.

I do agree that some of the NPC initiated conversation it BG2 happened at awkward moments. Anomen to my PC " I love you" (or something to this effect), my PC "Can't we wait until we are done fighting the lich to have this conversation?"

Yeah. Alistair gets to **** and moan throughout the entire game about Duncan, whom he somehow adopted as a father during their seemingly short time together. Me, I got my entire family murdered in blood and fire.

badtim, my first character was a female dalish elf rogue (avatar.) Get ready to experience racism at its worst. The Quartermaster at Ostagar thought I was his servant girl simply because I was Dalish. The noyv of that guy! Image IPB Ah yes... All Grey Wardens have missing front teeth simply because they get their faces kicked in so often. That's friggen gratitude fer ya!

Oh, and bye the way ((((HUGS))) to all jaded Grey Wardens. Image IPB

He did that for my Elf Magi female, City Elf Female, Dalish Elf Rogue Male, so I suspect that a Standard greeting for race: Elf.

My Answer:  Because I am a Grey Warden?

You know, I don't really think of it that way.. I consider it as a lot of things go 'unsaid' in the game. You don't hear everything in the actual game but sort of use your imagination.

I know it sounds cheap; but, for instance, if you play a human noble right after ostagar when you talk to alistair asking if he needs to talk about his emo, and eventually asks if 'youve had anyone close to you die' and you have the option to say 'my whole family was slaughtered,' he doesnt say 'Oh really?!' he says 'Oh that's right, I'd forgotten about that in all my whining' or something not so butchered in quotes.

So I expect during the course of travels everyone shares things about them as they would if it were real. It's only the highlights of your character addressing others that the player actually sees acted out in the game. The companions make past tense references to things that happen that you didnt see amongst them all the time, too.

That all said, I agree, it would be nice to have some concern and attention payed to you from your dear companions from that direction here and there.
