I'm just curious why so many people seem to dislike James. I think he's pretty funny and he gets a lot of funny dialogue on missions but a lot of people hate him. Is it the appearance? Is it because he looks like a meathead, but at least that makes sense with him being in the military, unfortunately the same can't be said for Ashley (Who let Angelina Jolie join the Alliance?)
Why all the hate for Vega?

He's... dumb.
I know, he's supposed to represent a ME-virgin, but he just comes off as really stupid.
"Hey, those Reaper troops look kinda like turians!"
-Upon seeing Marauders on Menae.

Vega is a bit of a "Meh" character for me, I don't hate him that much, but I don't like him that much either.

I don't think most people hate him. He was a constant companion for me, works great as a tank, and he's already got an 11 page thread requesting a romance DLC. I'm sure he's not everyone's cup of tea but not everybody hates him.

I take it you don't understand that term's meaning.

My only objection is when the writers are clearly using him for exposition on-the-fly, since it just comes across like someone stating the bloody obvious. But that's a criticism of the writers, not James as a character.
Most of the time, he's actually great for comic relief, and it's nice to have a character who's a guaranteed 'bro' to any gender or orientation of Shepard, without being a possible romantic interest. Sometimes, being friends is satisfying enough.
And big props to Freddie Prinze Jr., for a great bit of voice acting. Seeing as they're not going with his likeness in-game, he could have just used his regular voice, and let the art team define the character - instead, you really get the feeling he found a distinct voice for Vega, quite possibly using the character art as a basis. It's a minor thing, but I really appreciate actors who make that kind of effort.

basicly Liara is the choice of Virgins... is what he meant.

When the joke is too subtle for someone to understand, it probably wasn't a good joke.
Especially when he admits it himself.

I thought Vega was quite a good character - he's the new boy in a company of hardened veterans and trying his best. He's not the filler I thought he would be, made only to give you a third squad member until you reach Liara. He's useful, he has good dialogue and great voice acting.

I thought I would really hate him after that comic came out....but his awesome, love him, he and Garrus are my A Team....I take them together on the high majority of Missions.

First three reasons to hate Vega:
1- He yells to his superior officer "Hey".
2- He endangers your friends with stupid acts (like hitting that Cerberus shuttle and make it drop on your group).
3- He continue do chin ups while talking to his commander.
If people are okay with it then they've never been in military. Check how Ashley, Kaidan, Samantha or Steve acts in Shepard's presence or how Shepard acts around Hackett then compare it to Vega. However maybe different countries means different military ethics. I highly doubt that but maybe how Vega acts is normal in USA or Canadian armies.
In my opinion all above actions require a renegade interrupt (Punch to the face). On top of everything his AI makes him look like a coward/incompetent. During first Palaven mission (only mission I bring him because I have to) when ever we have to face husks I make him change to shotgun. Then he hides behind my Shepard and keep overwhelmed by husks whenever I leave his side.

So?
2- He endangers your friends with stupid acts (like hitting that Cerberus shuttle and make it drop on your group).
And if he didn't do that, Cerberus would get away with that Prothean data and we would lose this war before we even get to start and fight it.
HOW DARE YOU VEGA!

Weird.
Never happen to me.
I guess I was to frustrated by Liara being completely useless there so didn't notice Vega distracting few husks from me trying to revive her for billionth time.

Probably because of his stereotypical look. His personality actually isn't that bad.

He doesn't contribute to anything new to the game. And he's using a slot that could have been used for one of the sidelined characters. We never needed Vega in first place.

Same reason people hated Jacob in ME2? Being featureless, normal, almost two-dimensional soldier guy?
With Normandy having a tendency to be like a "safari tour", I'd say these characters are actually needed, stabilizing elements.

He can hit Cerberus shuttle from different angle maybe? (I know it is mostly writer's idea of action still looks bad to me). Yes he looks like saved the day but it could cost lives of two other soldiers with me. I barely tolarate that kind of behavior in real life so can't be okay with it in a game. Safety comes first & think before you act were my first advices to new recruits.
As I said if his actions tolerated in other militaries yeah people can be okay with his actions. However for me in military dicipline and respect to your superiors comes first. I dealt that kind of guy during my military service and never liked them. To me not realizing the situation you are in (like military organizations which has ethics and standards) means you are not a clever person.
People can like his personality but I can't see past his poor military ethics. If game would let me I'd like to kick his undiciplined ass on Cİtadel. I wonder which unfortunate events led to him have his rank. He clearly doesn't deserve it (No worries people like him also exist in real life
).
So in the end I hate Vega because he is worst soldier I can imagine. Being a soldier not about pointing a gun and shooting it.

I personally like him (and am one of those who wold like a romance dlc) but I think most of the hate (is there so much of it? I had the impression many players liked him) comes from his looks. If Bioware had made him normal-looking, first impressions probably would have been better.

I don't mind him looking like a bodybuilder but they could do this in less "douche" way. For example this tattoo on his neck is awful.
But as I said, his personality is not that bad.

Aside from an early hiccup when he nearly killed the team, I like Vega.
Don't take him on missions cause I don't need another soldier, but his banter with, heh, Esteban, is classic.
