I liked him, it was nice to see a character that wasn't moping about something half the time. (Not really a dig at other characters, I like good drama) He tried to find the fun in any situation and I always appreciate having a sense of humor when times are so dark.

Freddie Prinze Jr. did an awesome job with him, I just wish we had gotten to see the beginning of the relationship with Shepard. He just comes in and I was like "oh, apparently we are already buddies, that's cool I guess"

I don't want him to become a LI however, sometimes it's good just to have a solid friend.

dont like or dislike James in fact I thought Freddie Prince Jr did a good job

but for myself and I think a good amount of people that "dislike" him we are wondering why we have him on the team when we much rather have the ME2 characters back on the team I mean even one of them on the team but no we get James, Javik and Edi and while I like Edi as a AI i didnt like her in the squad didn't make sense to me seemed forced

we were given a character driven game in ME2 and we grew to like them and wanted more time with them

think of the kind of smart dialogue Liara and Mordin would have, wuth Ashley's mistrust of Shepard think of great moment Ashley and Miranda would have had, if Legion and Mordin were on the team until their deaths you would fell it even more, Jack after the rescue pretty much has nothing to do, Sarama after the issue with her daughter is taken care of if still alive goes and joins your force why can't she just join the team, what if you get to have Thane on the team for abit and watch him slowly die and you can't do any thing about it. I could go on but thier just what ifs and I'm sure you get the point

I think he's useful, hell of a lot more useful than Ash who I used to like in ME1 but now find she's an utter waste of space. The shield and health buff he provides can be a life saver and I like the banter.

Hey, I like Vega. He's relatable, and what marine isn't just a little bit nuts?
Not sure that I find him interesting enough to star in his own cartoon feature, when the rest of the universe is so rich.

But, eh.

He had some decent dialouge. But while i did not dislike him in any way i did not like introducing new companions when there already was a number of companions from ME2 with which i had much more involvment and found much more interesting.

This however is purely personal view.

Vega's awesome. The reason people hate him is

a) he replaces the usual krogan tank squadmate
B) he's the only new character besides the DLC squadmate
c) Shepard is automatically friends with him at the beginning of the game, regardless of what you want your Shep to do

Vega is the perfect meatshield, and since Wrex or Grunt were not there to fill the roll, they put him in. As for his personality, it's fine, typical Jr Marine/Soldier. As for the hate...maybe some people can't deal with his ethnicity. /shrug

I don't think it's the ethnicity for most people, just his typical jock-meatheadedness and/or faux stupidity (I feel like he wasn't *really* stupid, just acting like it). That was ok to me, since we haven't had that kind of character before, and it was interesting to have that dynamic for this game.

But yeah, I think a lot of the hate comes from people who wanted Wrex or Grunt as their meat shield instead.

And other males i nhear find the "harder than it looks" dialog with Vega awkward at all??
In Sheps cabin..

Vega - "...things are a little too soft up hear for me"
Shep - [points over shoulder to bed] "The beds harder than it looks"
Vega - [Throws up hands protest-like] "I'll take your word for it"

woah...awk...ward. It's bad enough I got Cortez crying and moping everytime I go down to the shuttle bay and having to choose renegade options so I don't have to listen to him say things like "Anything for you" and "You make me feel better when your around" etc.

I'm just curious why so many people seem to dislike James.   I think he's pretty funny and he gets a lot of funny dialogue on missions but a lot of people hate him.  Is it the appearance?  Is it because he looks like a meathead, but at least that makes sense with him being in the military, unfortunately the same can't be said for Ashley (Who let Angelina Jolie join the Alliance?)

I like him just fine. Don't worry about it. I could give a two sh*ts what anyone else thinks. As long as you like him that's all that matters.

Enjoy.

I also didn't know who he was at first, or why I was supposed to know him. Only on my second play through did I do the sparring bit on the Normandy... and he kinda grew on me.
As an aside, I felt the squad could have done with another strong Biotic character, it was a bit Soldier- heavy.

Nah, that's the kind of creepy joke that bros make with each other.

I liked Vega, if you start talking to him he starts to flesh out nicely. Like the bit with N7. He is the new guy among all these heroes just trying to hold his own. He is young and it shows too at points. But he does mature quite a bit by the end of the game. I got the sense that if he made it out alive he'd become a really good soldier and leader.

I liked him, thought he was a well written character and worked well with my female Shepard and I like the fact he was a buddy and had no interest in getting into my n7 pants.

In a RP sense he reminds me of what I think my young Shepard was like, his skill natural ability as a soldier got him were he is, just a bit unorthodox when it comes to military eticet, which is why the more 'by the books' people may not like him.

I think if they had made the history between him and Shepard clearer that would have helped a lot. Having him be such a good friend while still a total stranger to your Shep was weird. Wasn't he assigned to keep track of you on house arrest? But they never talk about that.

He does have some great dialogue with the other squad mates, particularly his BS session with Garrus in the mess. He makes for good mood lightener, even if I do hate being called "Lola". Why couldn't Shep be Loco no matter the gender? FemShep is plenty nuts.

Perhaps it's because I'm a band geek/nerd/gamer and he's the stereotypical jock, my arch enemy. That and I'm convinced that he was probably on the Jersey Shore at one point.
