Do any of you remember all the hype before the Phantom Menace? Do any of you remember how you felt after leaving the theatre?

When I was half-way through Mass Effect 3, after completing back-to-back playthroughs of the first two games, I was telling everyone (including my parents who saw the original Star Wars in the theatre on a date) that this was THE BEST SCIFI SINCE STAR WARS.

And now look at me.

I should have listened, Marauder Shields. I'm so sorry.

And it is tragic that Mass Effect has met the same fate as Star Wars.

To borrow from another franchise, "Fate it seems, is not without a sense of irony"

I still cant see how a team of writers agreed to this kind of ending to a series. One would think there would be mini protests within Bioware itself. Prob more things the monster EA publisher pushed for, and then threatened everyone in the "Entity" they acquired with a jobless state if they complained.

I wish developers would stop selling out to giant publishers, there's no reason for them anymore. Seriously.

Good read! Thank you.

And all of that boiled down into "Avoid technological singularity. Choose color of genocide please."

Sigh.

I can't care anymore for game developers because of this. There's only game themselves that I am a fan of. I've been burned too manytimes by blind purchases.

How did we go from this:

"Inconceivable, immortal, uninvolved super-beings that are not divinities per se, but so far beyond our realm of existence as to drive insane those who encounter and worship them. The seat of being, the mind, becomes rent apart and irredeemably misshapen to bend to the whims of a malevolent ancient life form."

To this:wizard:

edit: epic fail.

I demand a change in the title, artistic integrity be damned. "Mass Effect *was* the most important sci-fi of our generation".

God, I wish I'd been ten at the time, haha.  But we've all been ten before.  It's okay.  We forgive you.  ;)

I read something similar a long while ago.

I still think Phantom Menace had some good parts, I don't diss any of the Star Wars, though Empire gets dull after you've seen it 30 times since the whole plot thing at the end is obvious.

I've purchased ME1, ME2, and Me3, and all story related dlc to date. For me, I had Me3 on pre-order late 2011. It was a no brainer purchase, but I should have known better looking at how DA2 turned out. I won't be purchasing anything published by this game developer until it's had a high level of gamer scrutiny, as obviously bad endings don't factor into critic reviews.

Such potential... but they squandered it! For what? A marketing ploy for future content? To be artistic? This series will be forever scarred for these "endings," whether or not they really are endings.

Ugh. What might have been. This series was SOOOO CLOSE to being THE game series of this last decade, possibly our lifetime. I'm going to go eat stuff to hide my emotions now :(

They didn't squander it for "artistic integrity," that's for sure. Anyone with an iota of "artistic integrity" would never have released such a terrible, garbage ending.

I hope Bioware learns from this. Yes, the Mass Effect series is art. But when something as rich and full of potential as this comes out, it has a responsibility to society to be of the highest quality possible. I refuse to believe that Bioware does not know how to do that.

The reason is this: Mass Effect is the first blockbuster franchise in the postmodern era to directly confront a godless, meaningless universe indifferent to humanity.

Which they ruined by carelessly adding the Star Child without consultation of the entire writing staff. Great job Bioware.

As a friend of mine put it: "You don't have to meet God at the end of every damn video game!"
