Earlier I tried to type up a long story ending version of an ME3. Then the website erased it and i couldn't bring myself to type it up again. I just didnt give a carp. but heres the cliff notes version.

The Starchild is not the Catalyst. It is an Ancient V.I. It explains the History of the Reapers
The Reapers began as an ordinary race millenia ago that overcame base instincts and developed technology
and lived in a Utopia society. However they began to grow curious about what lay outside the planet and explored their solar system discovering it's wonders including a planet full of Element Zero. Eventually they decided to develop an device for exploring the galaxy which was the first Mass Relays but like Shooting an tennis ball out of a cannon they knew it was a one way trip so in order to ever come back they would have to convert their form into an immortal form I.E. the first Reaper. The first reaper went through the Relay and began exploring and Creating other Relays while back home more and more people became Reapers. {or for simplicity state the entire race was in the first reaper your choice} once the Relay network was created they watched the younger races develop star travel and then discover the relays. The Reaper was proud of them untill the young races destroyed themselves. the reaper used their broken ships and such for it's own uses it sighed to itself and waited for the next race but again it was the same story. Till eventually the only way to prevent Galactic Genocide was to force other species to Evolve like they had. They offered a choice at first. the other species refused and attacked. They tried just forcing a race to become a Reaper but instead the race went mad and ended up destroying itself so the Reaper began designing indoctrination and such and finding new ways to force races above they're barbaric warrng selves into true enlightenment. And more many cycles it worked The Reapers honestly believed they were doing good but they also had a contigency plan. If the Galaxy ever united. If a Catalyst for change could bring the Galaxy together then the cycle of genocide and domiantion would be over and the Reapers could find peace.
Shepard is the Catalyst  that the Reapers had been waiting for and is given two options.

Destroy- Essentially committing Galactic Euthanasia to Ancient Races the Cycle is over and the Galaxy will be united in a new age of peace. Indoctrination systems are shut off and the Reapers become giant hunks of supplies for rebuilding society.

Forgive- Shepard forces the Reapers to remember their original purpose of helping the galaxy rather then harvesting them against their will. The reapers call back their forces allow any outcasts of society to volunteer to join them and become part of something more. There are remarkably few takers and the Reapers head back to Dark Space after leaving plans and tech behind for the races to rebuild their wrecked societies they build one last Mass Relay leading into Dark Space in case they are ever needed again and Dissappear into Dark Space.

If Shepard has to die to complete these images i'd imagine it be less goofy then the Control and Synthetic.
I imagine it'd be something incredibly painful where shepard is having to move through the pain to get to the choice.  Either way the normandy wouldnt take off and crash land on a jungle planet rather it would land on earth and the crew would be seen in the FOB being patched up unless your EMS was too low in that case they'd be laying in body bags which are zipped up one by one.
