Mine won't start. Period. Not even if I try to run it manually. Windows just tells me that it "Did not respond to the start or control command in a timely fashion." The diagnostic tool didn't work for me at all, either. It just said that everything was fine.

When I ran the diagnostic, it said the same, but it also said DA Updater was updated after, and I was able to follow the location path. Whether it was there before and I just couldn't find it, or if the diagnostic fixed it anyway, I can't tell. I'm running Vista 64, btw. For Steam, the updater is in steam/steamapps/common/dragon age origins/bin_ship

I was able to manually run the updater from there and use it to install the PC Gamer addin A Tale of Orzammar. While running it, the progress bar never did fully complete, though it said the file was otherwise installed

1/6/2010 8:18 PM - Engine.Content.ContentInstaller, Information - Updating AddIns.xml
1/6/2010 8:18 PM - Engine.Content.ContentInstaller, Information - Install successful.

Other than an initial crash in chargen the first time through (doesn't seem like you can use an existing character), I started up the game okay, Other Campaigns, and there it was and seemed to start fine. So maybe problem solved for me for now.

I can only run DAUpdater if I run it as the Administrator whi installed DAO (only that user account will work - other administrators cannot run DAUpdater either). But since DAUpdater installs content to the user directory, I can't access the installed content unless I also play with that administrator account (which I don't, for good reasons Microsoft would be happy to tell you about).

And sorry if my question is a bit silly, but is there some news about this? I mean, regarding Bioware or EA. Some kind of "we are trying to solve the problem, stay tuned! " or similar?

Because I think this is not fair. We have an incredible game called DA, but thanks to this problems, the game is getting ruined.

Anyway, all the people having the DAUpdater problem, is having too, the problem I have which is that my registration code is invalid? (according to rhis website profile) I delete the code and enter the code again, and always the same: this code is not valid for this game. And the code was running ok all this past month.

You can tell they are working on it because they already have a beta version available!

What I don't know is why that beta doesn't work for me. I mean, I can't even install it cause it tells me that i don't have frameworks SP1...and the thing is taht I have version 3.5 plus update fix 3.5. I have vista.

I'll add my name to the "updater not working" list. I can't even find the DA updater in services.msc, it's not there, and I can't run the updater manually. Frustrating, kinda sucks not being able to access downloadable content.

"Also, you'll want to confirm your service starts when you boot the
game. A few users have reported they need to manually start their
service for some reason.
1. In Windows, Press start
2. Run "services.msc"
3. Find and start "Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater"
4. Restart game"

The problem I have is "Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater" in Services is there, but when I attempt to run it i get error message "Windows could not start the Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified."

It's as if the registry is blank and i have no idea what to try next.  It had been working before i moved my DAO folder to a different harddrive and then uninstalled/reinstalled it.

Its probably still looking for the service in the old location.

You need to unregister and reregister it. Instructions in section 3.2.4 of the Redeemed DLC Troubleshooting FAQ

You may need to use the old path when doing the "installutil  /u" step.

If you're still having trouble and cannot get it to run, there is a 3rd party application that does the exact same thing that DAUpdater.exe does. You can find it here:

i think i may have the same problem but i also know what made that problem.

im getting the same message : could not start dragon age: origins - content updater servise on local computer error 3: the system cannot find the path specififed.

but the thing is that i just bought a 1000mb hard drive ( drive E ) and i moved steamapps and steam luncher over too drive E from drive D since the old hard drive was only 250mb ( drive D ) so after i moved the folder and that takes about 30-40 mins and after running steam self updater but after that im having DLC problem with dragon age.

i looked up the service.msc and what do you know the path is still under drive D i whanted to change it but no it whont let me and im running as admin. i then uninstalled all the dragon age and re instaled it again but the path dosent change a bit i ran DAUServiceDiagnostic_beta it when thought and was complete but dint change the path. so im guessing this might be a problem for sum people but what i like to know is how can i change the path from Drive D too drive E.

p.s.

after uninstaling and instaling again i cant see noting under downloded content nothing at all ive yet to try this http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=286 that Dostovei suggested and see if that will fix it.

At the moment the easiest thing to do to fix the path to the service after you move it is to edit the registry.  See Section 5 of this FAQ for instructions on how to do that.

If I upload my version of the Daupdater would that help?

Well the only way that would help is if you attached all the associated files along with it. My guess is that it is not a problem with the exe itself, and all of the files seem to be intact. It works just fine on my girlfriends computer, and used to work on mine, but since i updated my .NET it has given me nothing but problems.

My system:
Phenom 2 x4 Black
8 Gigs Ram
Radeon HD5870 1 Gig Video PCI x16
Windows 7 Ultimate

Girlfriends System:
Athlon 2 x4 Dual Core
4 Gigs Ram
Radeon HD5450 512 MB PCI x16
Win 7 Ultimate

No clue other then maybe .NET, This is the first application my computer has refused to run, and I am lost.
So if you want to upload your working daupdater.exe and all the files that go with it, you can try it.
