Not so. Defense Matrix is great, but the obvious choice here is the best one after all. Defense Drone on a Drone Mastery Engineer just makes for pure awesomeness, even if that particular Tech Mastery upgrade doesn't even buff the little dude. Just absolutely wrecked shop at the Cerberus HQ and def going through new game + this way; it's pure chaos. Anyone looking for an alternative to the obvious caster style should give this a go if you like getting right up in the action.
Core skills:
Combat Drone: spec'd for max damage/shields & rockets
Sentry Turret: spec'd for shields/damage, AP Ammo & Flamethrower
Defense Drone: spec'd for range/damage & incapacitate
Tech Mastery: spec'd for Duration & Drone Mastery
Other notables:
Sabotage: spec'd for hacking. Only time you should need to pause the action is to hack a turret/Geth or use medigel.
M11-Wraith: The absolute perfect, light-weight/high-damage, close-to-mid-range weapon to complement a build that has like, 7 squadmates covering its ass. The range of your Flamethrower Sentry and Defense Drone will require you to get in, and trust me you'll be able to.
Cerberus Armor?: Armor really doesn't matter too much with this build. Just go for what you think looks the best (and IMO the Cerb Armor has the perfect look for an Egineer, though I do miss the added visual shine of Defense Matrix :[ lol).
And that's that. It srsly never gets old when you turn to engage the final enemy left in an area you just tore through only to see him stunlocked in a blanket of flames before getting tased right on his ass and then killed with a Drone rocket before he gets up and you can even shoot or fiery-napalm-backhand him.
