is it worth it?
after giving it some thought i have began to think that  lockpicking is useless
if i understand correctly, lockpicking generally offers medium or bad loot
all the really good loot is dropped from bosses or received from quests
only use of lockpicking is to get gold
however, if you just sell all your stuff and also steal it will net you a ton of gold
plus, it seems to me that since you only really need gold for good armor and weapons for your charachter, quests by themselves should net more than enough gold for your needs

the reason that i have been thinking this is that i have a rogue who doesn't do lockpicking since i didn't want to waste talents so i brought along leliana, and i have noticed that leliana is seriously hampered because of her choosing lockpicking
her talents could be much more valuable elsewhere

There's at least one sidequest which requires you to get into locked chests. For the main game track, though, if you're happy with your cash levels I wouldn't bother.

You forget the XP you get for lockpicking AND Trap-disabling.

Also i can tell you: If you can open all locks, you can also disarm all traps.

I've never found anything critical that is locked. You make more money, there is one item I can think of that is in a locked chest (mage's eye), you get some chests in particular places with lots of pots and stuff (usually right before a boss fight) and you can repair the balistas if you need them in the last battle.

Also, if you have high cunning, you don't need as much lockpicking. I believe that for each 10 points above 10 you have in cunning, you need one less lockpicking talent.
