What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

Just like the people who built it, I had no idea what it would do. For all I knew it would do this:

I thought the point of the Reapers were to end chaos by uniting all races. Races must unite as one to fight back, and the ones who don't die.

i thought the crucible was just a big Reaper wrecking gun, proof that the previous cycles could unite to fight the Reapers, even after death. Because the crucible was built partially by all previous cycles, remember.

I expected the "Catalyst" to be mass relays, and the Crucible to be a dark energy weapon. In a way so that for every time you used the catalyst you basically "spent" a relay, using it's energy to wipe a large area. This would make for some interesting moral choices, because using it would sacrifice so much. It would also make for some very powerful endgame decisions.

Think about it, you have the united fleet... They can take out a few isolated reapers, but they are in no way able to take out every reaper by themselves. Then you have to choose which systems get obliterated by Mass Relay explosions, and which systems get saved by your fleet.

At least this would have provided the "drastically different" endings we were looking for.

Sadly, I cannot add my personal input to this thread b/c I was spoiled. In any case, back in my ME2 days, I predicted that we'd need an EMP of some sort to take down the Reapers shields; the Crucible probably could have filled this role.

I was expecting it to damage the Reapers' drive cores with some sort of Dark Energy EMP equivalent, didn't know if it would kill them outright or just weaken them enough for the fleet to deal with.

I wasn't sure if it would be working at all, I guess my main thought was something along the lines of idealising the concept of bringing the whole galaxy together so they don't need some kind of ancient super deus ex machina. This was actually my thought from somewhere in ME2 till the end of ME3, latest from the encounter with the Quarians and the struggle weather or not they should attack the geth. Tali's Trial Scene.
In fact, I even replayed my ME2 savegame just to make sure to take every "don't go to war" option in the dialog with the Admirals.

However, when the Crucible docked I somewhat expected it to just destroy the reapers. Mainly that. Kill reapers, life's good again. Roughly. I'd have been prepared for Shepard beeing the Catalyst, sacrificing himself and all. I wasn't prepared for space magic.

I imagined it'd be like the Dakara Superweapon from Stargate, which it actually was (using the Mass Relays to channel the destructive force/code/etc. instantaneously). I did not expect the mass relays to be destroyed, however.

Honestly had no idea. Loved the concept of it. But then the ending(s) happened.

Thought it would use dark energy in some way to send out a signal that destroyed all operational functions specific to the Reaps so the rest of the fleets could then blow them the f^#k away.

I thought it would let me win. Even though its shoved down your throat that you cant win conventionally... I would have at least rather tried to then use the stupid crucible.

I honestly felt it would be a fail safe kind of deal. whoever started the reaper ships had a plan in mind that would just shut the reapers down incase they got out of hand. This thing would somehow send this signal out over the relays and shut them all down at the same time everywhere.
