I figured that since it was designed in the process of millions of years, a reaper was at some point killed and studied, and thus applied to the crucible. So then the weapon goes all boom and there is no space magic, but a explanation of how the reapers go down. I also thought the endings would be good. My Mistake.
What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

I actually never really tried to guess. I was scared it would be some kind of trap, but I was also confident it would work in some way

I thought it could be used to temporarily deactivate a Reaper's mass effect core. It would have taken fine tuning but that's why I had the best engineers in the galaxy working on the issue ... or so I thought.

I was expecting it to use the relays to send out a pulse that temporarily disabled the reapers allowing the amassed fleets to mop up, rather like what happened with sovereign.
The whole time I thought Bioware was ripping off the Black Hole bomb concept from Gunbuster (better ending than ME3 by far)...but I like your thought much, much more!

I thought it was going to turn out to be the mass accelerator weapon from ME2.

I was hoping that shepard could actually control it. Like getting into a control room and using it to blast reapers out of the sky as if you were in a turrent or AA gun.

Since it is explained that the Reapers have a special "Reaper Code" I thought the crucible would somehow release some kind of virus that would make the Reapers explode or disable them or something cool like that. Oh well...

I had no expectations. They kept saying "We don't know how it works", so I made no assumptions. I honestly wasn't impressed by the sphere/wave of light thing. But I guess that was important to their ending....

I thought it was going to be a giant cannon, that could one shot reapers. Not like what they made it into in the game, but like a gun that could kill 1 reaper with 1 shot.

After it was discovered that the Protheans did not invent the Crucible but built on its design like those before them, I figured it was originally a fail safe created by the first race to become Reapers. Something along the lines of it would act like an EMP and put the Reapers in stasis long enough for the fleets to secure a tactical victory.

I was expecting that your resources you collected would matter. One of the parts you get for the crucible says that it allows access to the relay network in order to exactly target every reaper in the galaxy. Seems like a useful tool. Imagine if you missed that one part?
I was thinking if you did everything you could and got everything and collected a majority of the scientists/engineers/etc that it would actually work and nuke them all, but if you just blew through the story missions and didn't bother with the collections that it would backfire and toast the Earth.
In short, I figured what you did would matter in the end.

I was expecting the crucible to cripple the reapers some way, allowing a brutal battle between the reapers and the might of an united galaxy to unfold.
I was expecting to see all of the war assets deployed in the cinematics or during the gameplay.
I was expecting to see the numerous possible endings as the developers had mentioned, one of them involving Shepard, Garrus, Tali and rest of the squad watching the dawning of the sun on the Earth they just saved, followed by a satisfying end to an EPIC that is the mass effect series.
Instead, I got colorful explosions and a Deus Ex Machina -___________-

I didn't want to expect anything, so I tried not to think on it too much while playing, hoping to be surprised on what may happen.

Surprise!

Well... I guess I'm just not that imaginative... I thought it was a giant laser gun what was basically a one hit kill on any reaper.
I would've lived with that. Because if you could oneshot Harbinger and a few Capital Ships and Destroyers that would make the Fleet's job a lot easier....

My theory was that depending on how much you learned about the Crucible you could influence what all it killed. Such as if you had a bunch of scientist working on it then only the reapers would be destroyed or just an average amount then Reapers and Relays got destroyed poor killed all synthetics and minimal play through such as just picking up ME3 and doing no side mission then everybody would die.

I thought it would channel dark energy into all the Reaper drive cores, causing them to explode.
Then I realized the truth, that it channeled dark plot energy into me and made me loathe the ending.

I was expecting the *reaper trap* doomsday device to fail, and then your massive galactic fleet of allies that you worked so hard to assemble would have no choice but to take on the reaper ships in a epic space battle.
Win or fail depends on your choices from me1/2/3.
But that never happened now did it Bioware * shakes fist*
I really wanted to see Rachni swarming reaper ships like ants.. bleh
Such a wasted opportunity.

I thought it would either be a Reaper trap or the Bastion.
I'm now fully of the opinion the Reapers designed it.

A giant, powerful laser. It would target each Reaper and vaporize them in one blast.
Not very creative, but I didn't want to set my expectations too high. Little did I know...

I expected a Reaper trap. Just didn't make sense that so many races were able to hide it and have the next cycle discover it. Nobody ever seemed to know about the Reapers but they all happen to find the superweapon to destroy them? Come on.
I figured it was just a Reaper plant. Like Sovereign said our technology was their to lead us down the paths the Reapers wanted. Chaos to Order. Why risk one of the lesser races actually coming up with something to beat you, when you could prove it for them?
