What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

I may be a little crazy but I suspected that it was an anti indoctrination device. A way to cut off the reapers from all of their organic forces and make them fight with their "bodies".

This.

But would have been funny if it were a giant microphone which allowed the voice of the keepers to be heard, a sound so irritating it was the original inspiration of the destructive cycling of the reapers, and hearing it again would crush their souls, causing them to eschew their giant space cruiser bodies for less auditorially capable keurig machines.

I also thought it could have been a reaper trap, but being a hacking device was pretty clever IMO

I kinda expected it to work in a similar fashion to what it already did with a few changes

1) The crucible would have functioned by broadcasting a "shutdown" code to all Reaper tech that emits an indoctrination field.

2) The relays would have still been the method of delivery but would not have been destroyed instead simply deactivated

3) The citadel would be deactivated for a time but would have been powered back on within minutes of the crucible firing.

4) Once the citadel was operational again the master control unit could be accessed to re-open the relay network or power the reapers back on

5) The deactivated reapers could be reactivated in a "safe mode" and given basic commands from the citadel master control and act as a modern day UAV (meaning whoever was commanding the reapers could instruct them to fly into the sun

6) Synthetics like EDI or the Geth wouldn't have been effected since the technology they're built from doesn't broadcast an indoctrination field (EDI may have been effected since she was built with reaper hardware)

7) A "control" option would have been available where you alter the broadcast the crucible sends out to where the reapers are still fully sentient and still broadcast their indoctrination field meaning they could corrupt whoever is controlling them

8)Reaper controlled forces like husks would be deactivated entirely and indoctrinated individuals would be put into a coma with brain damage based on the level of indoctrination they were at (so TIM would have been a vegetable)

I guessed it would be a weapon that would more or less shut down the reapers since we had seen that conventional warfare wasn't going to stop them, but at the cost of the mass relays. The price of breaking the cycle would be galactic isolation, and the universe being forced to rebuild on its own, not on the reapers' pathways. So I was actually pretty close there, at least to the Destroy ending, though my means of getting there and the story's weren't that alike.

I was thinking it was going to fail if I didn't gather enough assets OR it was going to work if I was fully prepared.

The way I imagined the crucible would work was that it would send out some sort of signal that would be sent across the milky way, this signal would disable the reapers which would allow for the fleets to move in and destroy them.

Then everyone would either die trying, or live, or whatever depending on the choices we made across the whole trilogy.

I thought it would either be a giant dark energy type cannon to disable the reaper's shielding or a way to send out a virus of sorts to disable reaper shields.

Believe it or not i was expecting it to be similar to what it did. But i thought that the decisions would be made at the computer console and that we wouldn't see starchild. Also there would be no Shepard sacrifice.

at first...I thought it might be some kind of dimensional emp gun...which would cripple or disable the reapers...making them fully inert...

then..I thought it might just be a big lazer gun..that would arc spark all the reapers....which it ended up doing!...to the reapers and relays...lol! but not how I expected...

then..I thought maybe it would send a anti reaper code across a quantum spectrum....and again..disable the reapers...or re program them or something...make them dance the conga...lol

then..I thought...maybe it can make a lil electric shock..like and eel...since I saw the eel fish for my tank...and made a conspiracy theory connection...wink wink...and the shock would make the reapers pee their tin pants...and rust out their hard drives...and make them stop mid attack!!

and finally..I thought it might make some ice cream...and we could share a cone..tell stories with the reapers...about that one time at that cycle....

I was thinking it would be some kind of EMP thing that only affected Reapers, so it would disable the Reapers and our fleets could destroy them.

Not sure that makes logical sense, but whatever. No worse than Space Magic! ™

At the activation of the Crucible, I was expecting the Leviathan of Dis to show up, and all other Reapers to go "WTF!" at its presence... or, dunno, something would happen. Quite frankly I wasn't exactly expecting any sort of disabling of Reaper shields really, I was expecting something more unpredictable (not necessarily "good" for originality's sake, but something "different"). At the very least I thought that perhaps Harbinger, individually-speaking would have reacted to the connection of the Crucible to the Citadel in ways that would suggest that the Reapers would start to understand the never-before-seen (by them) determination of a cycle (compared to all others) to survive, and for the first time ever, Reapers (via Harbinger) would actually "discuss" the cycles with Shepard, or something.

Really... ANYTHING but the Starchild crap.

Was I the only one thinking that it was going to be big BIG gun. The catalyst being the only thing powerful enough to power it. I was also expecting the star from Tali's recruitment mission to be the catalyst. Boy was I wrong.

I wasn't sure what the weapon would do other than kill Reapers, but I was expecting that a human (most likely Shepard) would act as the Catalyst. The fact that the Crucible plans were found on Mars and the note found during the mission on Mars indicating that the Protheans seemed to be interested in humans seemed to be pointing in that direction.

I thought it was going to transport Alduin to the far future. Some Dragonborn can deal with the issues, not our problem anymore.

Jacob: I was up until 4 last night changing Shep--man this coffee is bitter sweet.
Thane: Did you just say bitter sweet?
Shepard: Why?
Thane: Cant, control it, shadowy songs, the false chid, three colors, bitter, bitter sweet---
Grunt: Wait, aren't you dead?
Thane: uh...
Keurig: B-w-a-h-h-aha-ah. Prep-are 4 your ascension.
Jacob: Man I thought this thing wasn't supposed to come with auditory processors.

Independence Day-style disabling of Reaper shields or scrambling of their coordination.

Enough time for the largest fleet ever assembled armed with Thanix Cannons to do their job.

Second.

Except an EMP thing that only affected the Reapers fits under what everyone calls "space magic"

That was my second thought actually.  That it would somehow punt the Reapers 50,000 years into the future.  Since I had just beaten Skyrim.

Let the next cycle deal with them. :P

But I had no idea how Bioware would explain that rationally within the boundaries of their established lore.  Little did I suspect...

I thought it would allow me to enhance my resistance to the indoctrination powers in such a way to destroy the reapers, using my own mind as the catalyst for the crucible

Halo button.

Wipe out virtually all life to stop the reapers but give the next cycle a chance.

I kept thinking of farscape and the wormhole superweapon from that (way cooler then the crucible imo)
The idea that it was a "trap" seemed like it could have been a badass twist (though i guess in a way it was a trap..)

At the end of my second playthrough ........ shoot red, green and blue colored lasers at the Reapers.

At least I kinda got what I wanted.

Not true. The pulse would do to the Reapers what Shepard did to the Soverign 3 years ago.

I thought that it would be a Death Star-like weapon that could fire through the mass relays and take out the Reapers.

I did speculate that it would work like some massive gun or be used as some type of giant bomb.

I thought it was going to do what it did with the red ending, except without destroying the relays and creating massive plotholes

Also, I thought it wouldn't kill the Geth, edi, and other synthetics.
