What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

I thought it would be an enormous rocket propelled bomb (quoting the art book)

According to the art book it's just supposed to evoke that.

Anyway a lot of these "pulses" just sounds like space magic people keep on harping about, and none of these single endings people keep coming up with seem to give you any choice.

yeah i know lol but when i first saw it i thought it would function like one too

I was thinking along the lines that it wasn't gonna work, then the fleets would have to improvise.

Wish I was right.

this, I was expecting them to pour all these resources into it and then find out it was a waste or something and have to rally. Or find out it would wipe out the reapers but would destroy earth too and Shepard would have to choose.

I never really thought about what it did.

Independence Day-style disabling of Reaper shields or scrambling of their coordination.

Enough time for the largest fleet ever assembled armed with Thanix Cannons to do their job.

I was thinking Independence Day, too.  If only Shepard was as cool as Will Smith, maybe it would have worked.

I was thinking that the crucible would have to use a whole race of people to power it... Somehow. haha

Like, maybe Shepard goes inside and then his whole species drops dead. I don't know.

Hell, maybe if you have enough war assests you can get a reaper to go in the crucible... The catalyst being a reaper, and then the crucible shuts down all the reapers/destroys then. The illusive man then goes on to try and control them via the crucible, though that is a horrible idea and...

No, no. I'm going to stop thinking about this. Thinking too hard on how this would work out and this time I'll stop thinking about this for real.

So basically for the most part, those who mock the 'Space Magic' of the endings basically expected the Crucible to do a different kind of Space Magic.

I think most people who mock space magic didn't really like the crucible plot to begin with because it screamed "turn off reaper button". If we're forced to work with it there aren't really any options other than either 1. reaper trap 2. space magic.

No.  Well, yes if you call everything space magic.

I don't see how disabling the Reapers shields would be space magic though.  We know the Reapers have their own code.  We know that Reaper technology isn't infallible since they couldn't even break EDI's firewall.  We know their shields can be disabled, though that's not even entirely necessary as 4 destroyers can overload their shields anyway.  We also know that they broadcast an indoctrination signal.

Seemed to be reasonable to assume that you could use that same signal to broadcast something that disables their shields or screws with that same code.

That's not "space magic".  Not the same way as broadcasting a beam of light that gives Joker's cap circuitry.

Lasers of very high power locks onto every Reaper and husk in the galaxy, and fires a pinhead accurate laser at all locked on targets. In effect, it's a massive, ultra accurate homing laser cannon. It bypasses shields because it's light and hits the Reapers with enough force to instantly destroy them. The lasers are able to curve, able to wrap around a planets and other objects to make a perfect hit. To view it, it fires literally thousands of these lasers, one for every Reaper and husk in the galaxy, and they all go off in their own directions seeking that specific lasers target.

I'd seen speculation that saving/destroying the collector base would effect how you could use the crucible (using the reaper heart or brain), and I kinda liked that idea.

That said: the OP just made me drag out my PK Wars DVD and remember how WELL they ended that series, even forced to condense what would have been a full season down to a few hours.

Expected: Blow the Reapers out of the sky by using some super powered energy beam after it docked with the Citadel.

Received: Kick in the nuts.

I think I always imagined it was going to be something unexpected, like a reaper creation device or even a reaper itself, something so powerful even the reapers could not face it, but at the same time a truly destructive and evil power. I imagined the ending might revolve around whether shepard was willing to deploy it or not. Its funny how little it actually seemed to matter in the end.

Since I already knew it used the Mass Relays, I thought it would send a shockwave that would kill only Reapers. Sadly, It killed several other things. Which I wanted to live.

I expected Shepard to press the button and blow the reapers out of the friggin sky.  Then he passed out and Godchild said "Hell no" and beamed him up.

Yeah I though it was going to disable their barriers or something, or at least mess with their AI cores in some way.

I thought it would generate a supernova like explosion that would kill the Reapers close to it. For some reason I thought the catalyst was a planet, therefore we would be forced to use Earth since the majority of the Reapers were there. I thought that the reason people were so upset with the endings was that Earth had to be sacrificed no matter what. How wrong I was.

I was spoiled in the general discussions by a trap and that **** who kept making those damn videos with the catalyst dialogue and the final battle to retake earth synced up.

But before that, without any spoilers, at the time I thought that it would drain the relays of energy and use it to overload the reapers or something, and that EMS would help pick what died or lived through the energy surge, and how stable the crucible was in doing so.

I thought it would be some kind of sniper rifle that used the relays to exterminate every reaper in the galaxy.

It'd become the biggest and baddest space battleship of all time... with a 1 instant kill shot laser. Because it is controllable, it allows the option for Shepard to dominate the galaxy with it... becoming the evil renegade. All hail Emperor Shepard!

I was thinking it was some kind of Reaper EMP device, that would disable them (at the very least disable shields/weapons) so that the massed fleets could take them out.

My biggest concern was how the game would address, (in a reasonably believable way), the issue of it only affecting the Reapers and not other ships/tech (of course this was before I learnt of the existance of Space Magic).

Well it kind of did that, in one of the options.

I thought that the Catalyst that destroys all Reapers was going to be an organic life form, and that - one way or another - Shepard would be the only one to physically make it to wherever it was activated from (naturally) so he would have to sacrifice himself. I kind of had an inkling that there would be several choices as to what the effects of the Crucible would be, but I never imagined that all of the possible endings would be as uniform and abrupt.

I think one of the reasons the writers made it a point to say the Reapers had concentrated their attacks in Sol space was to avoid people calling the Crucible "space magic". If you can accept everything in the series thus far, there's no real reason to call bull**** on the Crucible. Remember, the Reapers were concentrated in the vicinity surrounding the Crucible, so the energy it gives off wouldn't even have to travel throughout the entire galaxy.

I expected it to be a magic bullet that destroyed all Reapers in one hit, to provide an easy perfect ending for Bioware rather than them having to deal with making a cinematic long enough to show a proper battle for Earth with all the fleets.
That and as a central plot device other than gathering the fleets. Aka: Searching for the Conduit in 1 in addition to hunting down Saren.

Bioware did the complete opposite of this. They made a Diabolus Ex Machina to doom the galaxy instead of save it. They did still keep it as an alternate driving force for the story, but I was really disappointed when I heard about it. Common, Deus/Diabolus Ex Machinas are for lesser writers Bioware. You're better than this!

But then, the endings tell me otherwise...

I thought it would blow their over-sized eezo cores.

Of course, that would probably have some negative effects for Normandy too.

I suspected it was some kind of Reaper EMP device. But it wasn't so much on what the Crucible did but how I might be able to use it. I figured that there would be more than one way to use it...aside from what color explosions I want.
