What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

Something similar to ME1 - turn off eezo cores of the Reapers an allow the fleet to take them down. Something simple, clean-cut. Not brutal like something energy-based and boom, but sophisticated like kill-switch-code sent to all Reapers. You know, "format c" or something. M.

I was expecting it to be a final trap by the reapers. Just another piece of their plan to force organics down a path.

I just thought that it was gonna target all the Reapers somehow (space magic) and blow them all to hell.

I was expecting it to give three color-coated options for utterly nullifying the entire Mass Effect trilogy.

I thought/wanted it to send out a pulse that somehow made it impossible for Reaper consiouness to remain wwithin the repaer bodies- reaper "ships" break down, some fall to earth. Reapers transfer consiouness to husk bodies turning the reaper war into a ground/ orbital bombardment war. Missions were you go to Tuchanka and Pavalen to end the reaper resistance. Includes stuff like: stopping them from creating reaper-like dreadnoughts, fighting Harbringer in his actual form (the robot thig for the species he was based on). Illusive Man attempts to control Reaper dreadnoughts. etc...

Actually I did axpect that Shepard himself turned to be out some kind of key element activating it... i hoped that depending on the way ypu played the game the crucible turned out to be a waepon or a cure or a transmitter for a diplomatic message or a huge manipulator etc... at last they somehow went this way, but not as i expected and not really satisfying as most of us feel :/

I was hoping for something really unexpected. When you first hear about it on Mars, my first reaction was "oh no, not another super-weapon!" Then I remembered ME1 and the conduit. Everyone says all throughout the game "oh yes, the conduit, must be some kind of super weapon." Well, guess what it was not, that was cool, that was unexpected. So I hoped they'd pull something like that one off again with the crucible. Something that gives us an edge but is not the solution. I didn't really have any specific ideas but I have read plenty here on the forum. One being that it is a ruse for the reapers, another that it is a time capsule that - similar to the beacon on Eden Prime and Virmire - transfers all the knowledge of millions of cycles into Shep, giving him the information he needs to defeat the reapers (Stargate SG1 anyone). Another that it counters the indoctrination signal, finally allowing us to study and/or board reapers. There were plenty of amazing ideas in the forums over the last couple of days alone.
But noooo, it is a super weapon and it is one that not only destroys the reapers but the infrastructure and backbone of the entire ME universe. Unexpected? In parts yes, but it was neither well thought through nor well executed. You certainly did better in the past BW.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it wouldnt work! I felt sure after the conversation with EDI about saving others over herself that she would end up sacrificing herself to make it work or something along those lines.

Not sure what exactly I expected but I know I expected it to not work as expected. Because I didn't think BioWare would really introduce the actual solution to the Reaper threat in the first 30 minutes of the game (via huuuge concidence in the plot).

Honestly, although I was expecting some kind of twist, I guess I basically expected the end cutscene, but without the mass relays being obliterated. So, the energy beam being fired and taking out every Reaper in the galaxy. With various amounts of collateral damage to ships and planets depending on how many War Assets you collected that improved the Crucible's quality.

IE, collect barely any Crucible-related Assets, and the thing won't even work haha.

I figured it was a trap - to get the kind of infighting we saw between cerberus/alliance and then trick the remnants into gathering together in one place for easy kill. But then the Reapers didn't count on Shepard and the whole goddamned galaxy uniting.

I thought it would turn into a giant, anti-reaper gun and start blowing the reapers out of the sky.

Yeah.. when Catalyst started talking all that bs, i was almost sure that EDI will show up and prove him wrong... or that Shepard contact the fleet and order them to destroy Citadel and The Crucible.

A bigass gun. Targeting systems ease and other devices you pick up as a war assets seemed to indicate that the Crucible was meant as an extreme-range mass accelerator cannon that could penetrate the kinetic barriers and armor of a Reaper with ease. That would've made sense at least.

No instead, its a gigantic key to the Stardouche's loft, where he ponders solutions to problems that don't exist outside of the ones that he creates himself by trying to solve them.

Something to do with dark matter, or disabling the reaper shields. Then all them fleets you mustered attack and mop up. That was what I thought...

For some reason I had this thought in the back of my head that said The Crucible wasn't a weapon, but a shelter.

As in, it's big enough to hold a certain population, divided amongst the Council races. Sort of like a big Noah's Arc, if I may be so bold as to get Biblical on you guys.

Then they can just "wait out" the Reapers, until some ticker counts down to start off the next 50k years. Kinda like seeking shelter from most real world disasters. Talk about some emotionally charged moments.

Being the coordinator for a finite amount of 'seats', no matter who you decide stays or goes no ones walking away not feeling sh***ty about that.

It was a bit of a "Hey that's not a cliche idea to implement against the Reapers. I'll believe in that" moment.

Disrupt the Reaper mass effect fields so they would be more vunerable to weapon fire and after a mission on the citadel to protect it watch as the combined race fleet ground them down into dust.

This. Considering all the War assets gathered i thought this was gonna be the way the crucible would function.

I thought it would broadcast, through the mass relays, some sort of Reaper-paralyzing energy or code. From there, the united peoples would blast their asses to oblivion.

:( Fail.

Going through out the game with being told, "We don't know what it is, but it has to be a weapon since the Protheans left info about it, so we have to build it to stop the Reapers." or "We need to figure out what it is otherwise we are like children playing with a gun." This kind of foreshadowing pretty much told me it wasn't going to end well or it was some kind of Reaper trap due to the, "plans are so simplistic to follow and we can probably make upgrades to it." Yes I'm doing a lot of paraphrasing.

I had a feeling that it would gather energy from the mass relays to scramble the reapers or do some mass effect shearing on them or something (just taking energy from the relays; maybe rendering them inactive for a time, but not all out destroying them). When I found out the Citadel was the Catalyst I thought I was right, considering it's the hub of the network and all that.

While, that may sound like I was gratified by the ending, sadly I was not.
