What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

I was just thinking it was going to be a magic Deus Ex Machina button that destroyed all of The Reapers and everyone lived happily ever after.

Not going to lie, I wasn't too thrilled when I was told that the schematics for a machine built to solely end The Reapers was discovered on Mars just as The Reapers showed up. It just came completely out of nowhere. Even from the beginning, I had a bad feeling about The Crucible.

Something impressive. How they failed to meet expectations that vague goes beyond human rationale.

I thought it was going to be something that called all Reapers to the Citadel and then closed it.

You would then have the decision to destroy the citadel (all reapers AND all the people on it) or fight the reapers normally.

Basically this came from the citadel looking a bit like a flower and reapers looking a bit like insects. Scientific I know.

The whole thing didn't make much sense to me really. 2 things you think would be put at the top of the agenda for Prothean beacon messages, Reapers and the crucible, but instead they seemed to think mass effect technology etc was more important for the next cycle to know about and that's what they put in 99.9% of the beacons. Only the beacon on Mars mentioned the crucible according to the story. Way to go Prothean race, cheers for that little last minute surprise.

I thought it would broadcast, through the mass relays, some sort of Reaper-paralyzing energy or code. From there, the united peoples would blast their asses to oblivion.

:( Fail.

That's exactly what I thought it was going to be. Instead, we got a genocide-blaster that rendered the entire galaxy useless.

Something once long ago shot and downed a Reaper with a single shot. We know it was the Leviathan of Dis. I'm thinking it was the rail gun to end all rail guns and make the main gun of the Destiny Ascension look like a pee shooter. I'm assuming it was built in such a way that allowed it to be that big and powerful and there was some in verse reason that the current navies limited the size of their dreadnoughts main guns.

So I was expecting the Crucible to be able to pick off the Reapers one at a time but still need to be guarded by a fleet lest it be overrun and destroyed. Which is where the war assets came. Hells, I even thought the catalyst was some mumbo jumbo thing you had to get to keep the Crucible from tearing itself apart when fired, which is why the Protheans never used the Crucible.

But alas, starchild space magic.

I'm sure someone else already wrote it but I expected it to make the reapers' barriers/shields fail.

They'd still be a threat until they got shot down and the forces would still need to basically search the entire galaxy in order to kill off all reapers. Basically, keeping the united races on red alert for ages afterwards.

I expected it to disable the reapers or something then the fleet just destroys them, like in ME1 when Soverin lost its sheilds it was quite easy to destroy...

I thought it was some kind of anti-reaper EMP.

anti-reaper EMP.

Yeah, me too. Hacket does tell the player that they know it will release a tremendous amount of energy, and that they need the missing bit (Catalyst) to focus that energy to destroy only the Reapers, rather than everything

I expected that will be some kind of trap to those who will use it.
Seriously. Citadel was built before protheans. It is so old so noone can imagine. And it was a trap.
Relays were built far before protheans. It also was a trap for those who use it because of being controled by the Citadel.
And now Crucible. It was started to built far before protheans. Its purpose is unknown. But these primitive races wantto use something what wasn't completed even by those ancestors?

It could be nothing but some kind of another trap. Obvious and horrific because of unknown purpose.

I really didn't know what to expect from the crucible. When I did form a theory it was after TIM died on the citadel. When Anderson and Shep are sitting there enjoying the view, Anderson dies and Hackett says nothing is happening. I watched as Shep crawled towards the console. I thought Shep would hit a button that would some how make the crucible destroy the Reapers. Either by disabling them or blowing them up. Then Shep would die while looking out at earth with that same smile he/she had after destroying Saren/Sovereign.

At first I thought it would disable the Reapers shields, then as the game progressed I suspected it might be a trap.

Nothing prepared me to StarChild ç_ç

I kept thinking of farscape and the wormhole superweapon from that (way cooler then the crucible imo)
The idea that it was a "trap" seemed like it could have been a badass twist (though i guess in a way it was a trap..)

We learn in ME1 from the Prothean VI on Illum (Name started with "V"...cant remember grr) that the Citadel station was created by the Reapers as a huge Mass Relay to get them into the galaxy faster from dead space. That being said, I figured since the Citadel was Reaper-tech and the Crucible had to connect to it, that it would send out some pulse to the Reapers in the SOL system, thereby removing most of the Reaper forces in the Galaxy (as most had massed there to counter the combined fleet).

After the main Reaper force was destroyed, I thought the combined fleet would hunt what was left till they were all gone (or move the Citadel + Crucible to whatever system it was needed in next).

Edit- The Prothean VI on Illum said the Mass Relays and Citadel station were left so races would advance along a path the Reapers wanted them to. To make it easier for the Reapers to harvest them.

Honestly didn't even think about what the Crucible was supposed to do. It was just this thing that kept getting mentioned while I was having an awesome time with the rest of the game. The Reapers were too big, too ancient a threat to be defeated by a giant space pear of anguish.

How wrong I was.

I was HOPING it was a trap set by the reapers. That would've been the only way to salvage it from the realm of huge massive awful terrible deus ex machina.

I read the ending leaks before I even knew what the 'Crucible' was so knew more or less what it was going to do when I first heard about it. Of course reading about something is very different to seeing it with your own 2 eyes.

A device that would weaken the reapers, maybe not completely destroy them, but weaken them enough for the armies you brought to finish them off.

I assumed it was a specially attuned kind of EMP or, at least, something that destroys the Reaper's defenses making them easy prey for the fleet. Or a deactivation signal. Could have been a lot of things, even a self destruct signal...
