What did you expect the crucible to do? (before you beat it of course)

I was curious about it because how can 1 weapon destroy so many reapers without blowing the entire system up.
I eventually thought that it could disable all shields or something so that reapers are vulnerable to all fire and the massive fleet would be able to take them down easilly.

I thought it would just "absorb" the Citadel's power to use as a weapon when it shoots.

Independence Day-style disabling of Reaper shields or scrambling of their coordination.

Enough time for the largest fleet ever assembled armed with Thanix Cannons to do their job.

This, pretty much.

Yep!  I also expect the DLC to be "clean up missions" that allows the team to visit various systems and wipe out he the rest of the remaining Reapers and deal with factions trying to take advantage of the state of the galaxy in its post war state.

Honestly I was expecting it to send out a signal that shuts down all the reapers. I was expecting a epic battle to get to the citadel.

I expected it to do exactly as the 'destroy' ending did.

Sans blowing up every relay in the galaxy.

I expected to get to the beam unharmed with my team (or not, depending on loyalty) before facing a battle through the Citadel meeting up along the way with all the war assets I had acquired for it. After fighting our way through we would reach the Catalyst, which would disable the Reapers enough so that dependant on you Readiness you had a chance of winning or losing the battle. High enough Readiness and every box ticked on the play-through and you got the happy ending, just rushed through and little to no readiness and you actually lost, and the Reapers won, with varying flavours in between.

*Edit* Oh, and I also thought the DLC would be missions to retake Thessia etc, as the Reaper ground troops would have been unaffected by the Crucible.

Haha!

Well I wanted Bioware to come up with some original way to disable the Reapers so the Fleet could win.

I expected Bioware to cop out with an Independence Day type thing so the Fleet could win.

Which they did.  Sort of.  Except it was just a massive blast that killed or controlled Reapers somehow.  And the Fleet that you had spent all game creating played just about no part.  Bioware will probably argue that they were protecting the Crucible but uh... didn't really look like the Reapers made too much of an effort to go after that thing.  It's slow as molasses and it just sort of floats in there...

Plus that Synthesis thing.

Destroy the Reapers. I intially expected Joker or James Vega to sacrifice themselves to the greater good (even if it came down to a choice, Vega would have been the one to sacrifice himself). Afterwards, my FemShep could have some downtime and get in a quickie with Jacob Taylor.

I didn't know. That's what kept me playing. In most Sci-Fi I've read or seen the 'great big superweapon' is always a bad thing. And ultimately gets not used if the 'good guys' have it or being destroyed if the 'bad guys' have it.

I was looking forwards to seeing what Bioware came up with and got the endings as they stand now.

I expected some kind of huge ass wave, like we actually got. Which just made the reapers crumble.

I expected the "Catalyst" to be mass relays, and the Crucible to be a dark energy weapon. In a way so that for every time you used the catalyst you basically "spent" a relay, using it's energy to wipe a large area. This would make for some interesting moral choices, because using it would sacrifice so much. It would also make for some very powerful endgame decisions.

Think about it, you have the united fleet... They can take out a few isolated reapers, but they are in no way able to take out every reaper by themselves. Then you have to choose which systems get obliterated by Mass Relay explosions, and which systems get saved by your fleet.

I expected something like the overload Sovereign suffered from killing it's Saren-Husk.

It seems a reaper can be that severely harmed by destroying one of it's remote-controlled puppets.
They are most likely connected by some kind of signal.
The Sanctuary-mission is quite a supporter for the theory of such a signal being the weak point of the reapers.
Then the prothean VI tells us about the citadel controlling the reapers via dark-energy-transmissions(which could affect Haestroms sun).

I thought, the crucible would create a slightly stronger signal that overloads the reapers and would use the citadel to broadcast it.
I even thought, the crucible could be a last attempt of redemption from the creators of the reapers.
It was quite convenient how the Crucible is just big enough to be enveloped by the rounded half of the citadels plates.
Just as if it was the control-system belonging to the citadel, which the reapers destroyed when they rose against their creators.

The Saren-husk didn't explode and wiped out half of the citadel to generate such a signal.
And it was just one small "humanoid" machine.
I suspected a dark energy communication array, which already spans the whole galaxy and is made of the same technology that can survive the blast of a super-nova(relays to Ilos), would be able to send a signal to kill the Reapers without destroying the relays or vaporizing the surface of earth.

I had a couple of thoughts;

First was conventional .. that it was a big honkin' space gun that could one-shot Reapers, and the Citadel would become the floating weapons platform that turned the tide of the war.

Second was conventionalish too .. that the crucible would negate the Reapers shielding technology allowing them to be tackled with conventional weapons and tactics.

Third was philosophical; that the shared effort of creating the Crucible was a huge galactic test; by proving that the various civilizations could work together to complete its construction, we had "passed the test" and shown the Reapers that we were truly united and not locked in a cycle of destruction. Hence, Shepard was the catalyst of galactic peace.

I was thinking that the crucible would be powerful enough to force the reapers underground somehow. That the fight wouldn't end completely but that reapers would have to change their tactics and rely much more on stealth and indoctrination to default the galactic civilizations.

I had no idea, my only idea I had was it was going to be some colossal superweapon that would wipe out the reapers in one foul swoop, however I had no idea how it was going to do that and not wipe out the inhabitants of the galaxy as well.

I thought the catalyst was going to be a dying star, like on Haestrom.

It's description was too vague, I fully expected it to be some sort of beam weapon that failed. The EMS terminal hints at 'strength for a final push': I assumed the final push would be after the Crucible failed.

Basically this came from the citadel looking a bit like a flower and reapers looking a bit like insects. Scientific I know.

Your idea about what would happen obviously did not come to pass... But there might be something to that observation.

Honestly, and perhaps a little silly, I thought it was a giant gun. Like it would've been this massive weapon of ultimate destruction, could EASILY rip through the Reaper fleets. Only trouble was, insane amounts of collateral damage. You'd end up having to choose to fire it and destroy whatever is within a four light-year diameter of where you're aiming, or hope you can beat them conventionally.

Yeah like I said, silly.

Something epic with lots of big awesome explosions and Reapers fleeing the field in fear!
You know, what awesome epic antagonist killing super weapons usually do.

I expected it too control the relays and give the alliance a tactical advantage.
