That's not a remark about the endings either, even with a great ending I'd still rank them that way. I feel like ME2 had the perfect balance of character development and atmosphere with intensity in combat. The narrative was smaller and much much character driven, opting to set up major conflicts as opposed to driving the main plot the same way the first one did, but it was just so well executed that I can't call the first one better. They are very close though, and I'll probably debate about which of those two is better until the end of time.
ME3 had a poor balance between its main content and side content in my opinion. All of the priority missions were incredible, but everything between it just felt... boring. I didn't want to be bored, but I felt that way far too often. I also think that this game had a weak opening. Similar to Skyrim, you are still trying to get your bearings while the most important thing ever is happening. You aren't equipped to properly process the events happening around you. Contrast that with ME2's opening where you are thrust into the situation only controlling movement. It lets you get used to the change while you are able to be completely absorbed in what is occurring.

- Best story with excellent pacing and build up
- Sovereign
- Mako planet exploration (I felt like there was a tonne of unknown worlds for me to discover and explore).
- Renegade points for running over a pyjak
- Shifty looking cow
- Matching weapon and armor sets, my squad felt like a SQUAD rather than 3 people who happen to be in the same place (look at a ME1 squad in full Colossus armor with spectre guns, and compare it to ME2 with catsuits and belt bras)
- Noveria
- Unexpected thresher maw attacks
- Funky soundtrack
- I'VE BEEN ON THE MOON
- Decisions that made me stop and think out the possible consequences (Virmire, Rachni queen, the Destiny Ascension... Obviously ME3 ruined this one, but I'll always remember it fondly).
I do still love the other two, but for me ME1 was something different and special, and although I didn't play it until 2010 it still evokes the same nostalgia as games like Tomb Raider and Pokemon Yellow.
On t'other hand, ME2>ME3 mainly due to ****ty endings and lack of Jack and Miranda.<_<

I think ME2 edges it for me over ME3.
It was the first ME that I played, I loved the characters, I enjoyed the story, I liked pretty much everything about it. That said ME3 is the superior game in several key areas, but the negatives it does have are much more damaging than those of ME2 IMHO.
I liked ME1, but the combat is frankly dreadful at times, I'm replaying it at the moment and the action just doesn't flow like ME2 and ME3. I'd sum it up by saying that in terms of story ME1 is the winner, in terms of gameplay ME3 wins, but as a combination of story and gameplay, ME2 does it for me.
Pretty much sums up my oppinion if you replace the reason of me2 winning over me3 (story) with characters.

But, if the ending wasn't all wrong in ME3, I might make that number one. But as we all know, BioWare pooped the bed.

Written by rational, thinking adults.
Even the "sex" was superior. They managed to have the women nude (No bras, no panties ALL NIGHT like in ME3 - literally, Ashley wakes in the morning in your bed STILL WEARING A BRA! What woman does that?!) and gave it a nice suggestion of what was actually going on...fairly adult and sophisticated in depiction.

Mass Effect 1 still my favorite. Yeah the combat system cool downs on powers was wonky but the game itself was just plain awesome.
I loved the story but I hated that freaking inventory menu...I had 100 pieces of the same thing...how annoying, it took so long to get rid of them...lol

ME1 had the best story experience (and ending).
ME2 is still my least fave.
