ME2 - combat I wish ME1 had, wish it was more open like ME1 (large maps, vehicle travel etc.), sniping someone from what was actual long range was greatly missed. Story was good too
ME3 combat again, most emotional of the three I think. The story had its good moments but it also had those weird wtf ones as well. Multiplayer was actually enjoyable too, was afraid this would be a bad inclusion at first.
Overall I would have to go with ME1 as it has my favorite story out of the three

Then I picked up Mass Effect 2 after reading some reviews, I loved it, the combat was much better and I had to make myself stop and go back to redo ME1. I ended up just turning the difficulty down to the easiest setting in that game to muscle through it. I really am not a fan of ME1's combat, it's kinda clunky bland.
ME1 had an atmosphere that the others just can't match though. Once you get off of the citadel the game really takes off, it's a slow burner but it just has a great vibe to it.
Overall I have to say ME2 is my favorite. ME3 has the best combat hands down, and I'm greatly enjoying the multiplayer as well, but in terms of sheer enjoyment I'd have to say ME2 wins. It didn't have that 'something' that made ME1 feel like a great adventure but it was still a fantastic game.
All three are up there in my favorite games list.

ME1-Best story, characters, atmosphere and music. Gameplay is GOD AWFUL however, which really kills it for me TBH. Thank god for Soldier w/ singularity on casual.
ME2-I was a big fan of the mini character based stories ME2 was based around, and it was interesting working with Cerberus. Combat was a huge improvement but RPG aspects were greatly diminished. A lot of great moments and some of my favorite convos. Probably the most polished game out of the trilogy,
ME3-Best combat, and the return of more RPG elements was much appreciated. Disregarding the ending, it still had it's flaws though. The journal sucked, animations are bad(quite frankly, some of the worst I've seen in a AAA title) and convos seemed like a step backwards(less dialogue options, lots of "eavesdropping" conversations). Lots of awesome moments though, and I loved the characters and story(again, disregarding the ending). Ultimately though....I dunno, it kind of feels rushed. Great game but I expected more after 2.

I'm not happy with the route Bioware are taking, APPEAL TO THE HARDCORE FANS NOT THE CASUALS. You've already hooked us and we'll buy pretty much most of the games and the DLCs. The Casual gamers won't buy the DLC or play the game for very long, probably won't even rate it. Make your choice Bioware, its them or us.

ME3
ME2 Worst story always equals worse game when I'm comparing RPGs
Wow, lots of ME1 love in this thread, didn't expect to see it, I thought I was going to be alone lol.

ME2 was the most detailed. It had the best conversations and was the most polished. Did not like the lack of customisation. Also preferred the Hammerhead to the Mako. I also like that they added that taxi cab race in it. There just was not enough of those types of missions for me. More diversity is good. Planet scanning was better than driving around for minerals, but was way too boring after a while. Also was not a fan of the Human Reaper boss; was a bit cliche in my opinion.
I just don't get why ME2 and ME3 were not "RPGs". Just because they had less customisation and less exploration. They were all "Role" playing games. That is what the genre means. They lost a bit of their adventure, but were more RPG than ME1 as your role affected the game a lot more in the last 2.
ME1 had the most epic ending (ME3 was more "epic" but too controversial). Loved the vehicle missions. However, they did go on for a bit too long and got tedious. Hated the over-customisation of guns and armour. ME3 was an improvement. But, it was better than nothing in ME2. It had the best Citadel, the other 2 did not give the sense of scale as ME1. Combat sucked though.
ME3 was probably the best, and can be the best game ever once the end is sorted. Then it is ME2. Then ME1. That said, ME1 is still my favourite compared to any other game ever, as a reference. Or it is at least equal to Chrono Trigger

2) ME2 had a terrible story. Shepard died only to reset the stats to level 1. The crew members have their own quests, but only Tali's seemed to be related to the story. These are not bad, but just acted as fillers. The end game was silly. A base near a massive black hole? Not a good idea. A human reaper? Too much Frankenstein complex. It was clear that reapers were already too powerful, so fighting the collectors and hiding anything about the reapers was probably BW's best idea. I do not require a game to have different endings, but if you promise that then do not come up with a suicide mission in which the different endings merely mean different survivors. If my PC dies in any game then I view that as a failure. So, that "ending" never happened to me. The gameplay feels like I've accomplished nothing. I felt just as strong at the start of the game as at the end.
3) ME3 is my least favorite. It starts well. But slowly it feels like you are part of a galactic funeral. Everyone around you dies or is greeting you farewell. Some even do that more than once. That's OK for the first run, but I can do without on the subsequent runs. In all previous games there were supposed to be these large decisions which would have impact later on. I never saw any of those having a real impact, because at the end of ME3 all civilizations will be lost, and because all relays are destroyed, it is, according to the codex, the end of intelligent live in the stellar system near an exploding mass relay. Planets have no time, nor the resources, to evacuate billions of people. Of course there is a winner in ME3, but it is not Shepard, nor his friends. Any decision that could have an impact on the galactic society is blown away at the end.
Part of the fun of ME1 and ME2 is what impact Shepard's decisions have in the final showdown. And because there is none, it also rubs off on the previous games: There is no reason to play those anymore. In that respect ME3 destroyed the fun of ME1 and ME2.

While I don't agree with all of your post, I do with this part. I still remember my "OH SHI..." reaction when I discovered that Sovereign was the one really running the show!AngryFrozenWater wrote...

Yeah. Even on subsequent runs I was trying to get answers to questions.
