ME2 for me. I felt that it had more detail, liked the darker themes and style of the game, and the places you visit are more vibrant than ME1. It also felt more satisfying at the end, and I like suicide mission stories.

If ME3 played out more like ME2 (story wise) it would have been more satisfying.

It really depends on what you mean.
Story wise definitely ME1.
Gameplay and graphics ME3.
DLC ME2

Somthing like that.
ME1 for the nostaligia, story telling and introduction to the world.
ME2 for the characters and gameplay.
ME3 for the same as ME2.
They are are great but they all have their faults.

ME 1 was awesome. Complete RPG style game. Storyline was just terrific. Decisions to be made were truly awesome. The combat system was really slow, that was what I didn't like about it.
ME 2 got Combat Upgrade on the table but leaving aside all RPG aspects of the first game. Storyline was acceptable. Big shock when the Collectors were Re-Engineered Protheans.
ME 3 got some Combat Upgrade, introduced some old RPG aspects back into the game as Weapon Mods. The Storyline was amazing until the end. The actual endings may have been good for just one, maybe the bad one, or the good one, or whatever, but no matter what choices made in 1 and 2, you get the same ending different colors only.
Still an everythin, I will say ME 1 was the best. (The combat system was upgraded thanks to new technologies and new software, so in fact what really matters is the RPG and Storyline.)

Mass Effect 2 since character development had been significantly improved and combat was a lot smoother. the ME1 then ME3

I'd say out of the entire series, Mass Effect 2 would have to be the best. Sure the story wasn't as "epic" compared to the first Mass Effect but everything else about number two makes the the other Mass Effects feel slighty inferior.

ME2 and ME3 are tied at first place. ME 1 comes in second.
P.S. I'm counting the ME3 ending in this rating.

ME1 for the epicness of the last battle with Sovereign. ME2 was more entertaining overall, but the few moments leading to the ending was not as great as ME1(still impressive though

ME3 > ME2 > ME1 each have their pros and cons but in the end after you know the story it becomes all about game play and replay value and ME3 has both with the better controls and Multiplayer

I would give it to ME3.
My list goes like this: ME3>ME2>ME1.
I still do not understand why ME1 gets so many points for a lot of people. The voice acting was much worse, the conversations where not as good as in ME2 and the length of the main story is less than14 hours... I finished the game in 13 hours and did a respectable number of sidequests as well (not all). And the combat in ME?? Oh my God the combat was a royal mess... and the inventory?? Need I say more? Or the fact that the skill trees are 70% useless when it comes to actual benefits from "leveling up"?
Sorry ME1 had a great universe, a great story, but some awful awful awful combat, inventory, skills and game length.
ME2 is where things became interesting for me. The gameplay was finaly what it should be, it had one of the best cast ensemble ever in any videogame or movie at least for me, it was bigger, there was a bigger sense of exploration, you visited amazing places, your upgrades and levels made actual sense and it had the best ending mission of the trilogy. Also conversations where much more interesting and mature than what they were in ME1.
The negative stuff about ME2 was that they went overboard with removing elements and they stripped more than they should.
ME3 is easily the best when it comes to the gameplay part and mission part. I seriously am baffled why people would say otherwise. ME3 definetely had overall the best missions out of the 3 games minus the final mission which sucked. The moon of Palaven mission was as atmospheric as it gets, the mission on Mars with the chase at the end was simply incredible and need I really comment about the missions on Tuchanka and Rannoch which were -just by themselves- like game ending missions?? Or the mission in Thessia and the amazing mission in Cerberus headquarters? The only negative aspect when it comes to mission design in ME3 was the final mission.
Also ME3 had the best combat by far. It was feeling great and finally your biotic and tech powers had actual meaning. it also had the greatest enemies and the smartest AI of all previous games. Also many RPG elements came back like modifying your weapons, without the awful inventory of ME1 and the expansion of skill trees, without making it a useless mess like it was in ME1.
ME3 only drawback was the not so expanded and cool cast and of course the ending, because it left you with a lot of questions, a lot of plotholes and if bioware addresses that issue with care and attention , then ME3 will be miles ahead of everything the trilogy had to offer.

All of them had their own strengths and weaknesses, but here's what I thought. I play for story and my ratings are mostly based on the replayability of the games.
#1 ME2 Positives for replayability, engaging DLC, and choices that directly impacted the conclusion of your suicide mission. Improved combat and graphics from ME1 plus even more freedom with choosing what quests to do, not do, and when. More cities to visit, like Omega and Illium, plus it felt like there was a lot more to explore. A full experience that made you feel like your choices mattered.
#2 ME1 Positives for story, exploration, Saren as a villian we could empathize with, and changing squad members' views depending on how you respond to them. It does have the nostalgia factor as well. Plus all fun weapon mods. A great intro into the series with a fantastic story. Combat wasn't as good, but the story was what drove this one.
#3 ME3 Positives for combat, armor customization, more weapons + mods, and touching moments. Game play was far too linear, choices didn't seem to matter in the end, plus we lost the middle/neutral dialogue option and squad conversations were replaced with autodialogue rather than actual response conversations like in ME1 & ME2, all of which really decreases the replay value. Ranks 3 mostly because of the replay value.

ME2 even without ME3s bad ending. ME3 would be a close 2nd and ME1 a close 3rd.

ME1 overall, especially for the story and exploration who overshadow the poorly designed user interface and lackluster economy/loot system.
ME2 second, interesting characters but very poor game mechanics (rock paper scisor strategy level and an unchallenging economy/upgrade system makes it a no brainer to play)
ME3 third, maybe the best game mechanics of the three but the story isn't very much interesting and isn't link to what you do, you're pretty much a witness to the event as in DA2 rather than a part of it.

1. ME 2 - Best squad, more dialogue control, better romances and the suicide mission had plenty of variation.
2. ME 1 - Best story but the series was still finding it's legs. Gameplay was lacking but still enjoyed it. I replayed it numerous times.
3. ME 3 - Good story but Bioware uses slight of hand tricks in an attempt to fool the player into believing they are receiving more when they are actually getting much less. Lame and much smaller squad, less and poor romances, far less dialogue choice and a linear final mission when compared to ME2 suicide mission. Out of all the games this one has the least replay value by far.

Overall...probably ME2.
ME3 would've taken it but I don't think I need to go on there.
As my 'least' favourite, ME1 is still a damn fine game.

1, great story, great feelin to it ..kinda lika a sci-fi-mysterie-thriller and the feelin of "scale".
3 if there`s something positive coming out of this "ending-fiasco", great gameplay, best soundtrack, weak story, but some amazing sideplots and some good dialogue (even with all the autodialogue)...the mp is kinda fun too.
