However, while we do appreciate that fans were creative in how they expressed their views, after a lot of discussion, we decided ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team. This is a subtle, but important aspect in determining how to pass the feedback to the team.

On the one hand, good on you for giving cupcakes to kids. On the other hand, are you seriously suggesting that feedback passed to the Mass Effect 3 team should be in some way limited to that which celebrates their work or accomplishment?

Knowing when you screwed up and the ability to admit it is one of the most importent aspects of working for a living. I think that the developers, as adults and professionals, need to face the negative feedback honestly, which thus far seems not to have happened. Appeals to artistic integrity and apparent unwillingness to acknowledge that the ending failed to measure up to BioWare standards do nothing positive, Chris.

Yeah, I realize the irony of the 4th option (can my Shepard have that option, please?)  But I can still admire it.  Its like a wrestling match with my brother when we were younger.  We pulled a good move, and they turned it around with a good judo move of their own.  I didn't hate my brother when he did that to me, and I don't hate Bioware for doing this.  And the end result is that ultimately some kids win, and everyone can walk away happy.

This in no way lets them off the hook for putting out a crappy ending to ME3 like they did; I still am hopeful though that they'll fix it.  But c'mon...there is no downside here.

-Oh... I think youre wrong. Because right now some of the fans outthere are thinking "how can we outwit them next time". This is pr "warfare".

So... whats next? Q-tips to make them "listen"?  Something will emerge. Im sure of that. Because whatever else you might say of this fanbase... its certainly not unintelligent nor unoriginal.

What I'm curious about is, do people really think that by eating the cupcakes Bioware was just going to say "Yep, changing the ending". It was a small, humor-filled gesture on our part, with a bit of bite. Bioware got the cupcakes, they read the notes, acknowledged the ending issue again, and then sent them off to charity. Everybody wins.

Go look at Stanley Woo's post from a day or so ago that covers the "yep changing the ending"

As far as this outrage about them not keeping the cupcakes... Childs Play. The defesne of that from so many that are now acting outraged is "well something good came from it"
Now they are trying to argue semantics of how its okay "something good came from this" but how BioWare used them.
Damn that wheel turns fast.

*sigh*

Chris, another closure from left field? And with another enigmatic explanation? Well, at least props for handling the donation part of things and not just refusing shipment. It probably won't save that youth shelter any money, but perhaps 28 kids would be a bit happier for the 15 cupcakes each?

ALSO: Stop making it so hard to take our money from us! BioWare is an entertainment company, right??

Wow, did not expect that. Very well played Bioware.

With creative, on your feet thinking like that, its a wonder that you couldn't craft a better ending

ZING!

Still, glad someone got to eat the cupcakes. Bonus points for needy kids.

Before they dropped the cupcakes off at the shelter they scraped the icing off the top of each one and made the kids pay $1 if they wanted to have the icing put back on.

They did accept feedback, they kept the notes after all.

But sending cupcakes to try and say "You dun f'ed up" is a backhanded compliment.

Why can't more people see this.  The message was made.

No matter how tongue in cheek or how much love... it was dirty and backhanded at the core.  Maybe a tiny core but that is the kernel that created the cupcake drive.

In the end, BioWare made a good call, kids got treats, they kept the feedback, and there was positive media attention.

I consider that a victory.

Agree 100%

Ok guys, seriously? It's ok for us to donate 80k to Child's Play but if Bioware donates cupcakes to children and that's a publicity stunt?

The only thing you should have a problem with is the reason stated WHY they decided not to accept the cupcakes. Regardless of how they felt about the gift it should have gone to the kids, but to tell us they only didn't accept it because it wasn't 100% we love you and everything you do is perfect here are cupcakes is a little upsetting. Call them out on that alone, if even that...

Let it go guys, the kids got cupcakes, Bioware got that message. Everyone wins. Still, I'm thinking maybe a Marauder Shields poster or plaque or something next? Something that they can hang up in their offices XD

Indeed it does. It's just a bit funny because about a day ago, this thread was the height of positivity, and now suddenly it's exploding every which way.

Ultimately I don't think bioware wants to screw their fanbase so I guess I am evaluating Mr. Priestly's comments based on that. I am curious what he meant by

I think most applaud the giving of cake to children. What is troubling is the implication that no feedback will be passed along that doesn't "celebrate the achievement" of the development team. Criticism will be deflected.

Wow, so what, if the cupcakes said "We <3 Bioware" you would have kept them?

What a bunch of nonsense, shows Bioware refuses to accept criticism in any way, shape or form.

Good for the Youth Center tho.

Now this is the only issue I have with this.

Honestly the whole "no snarky feedback plz." is weak. Especially hilarious coming from you Chris who loves to snark on the forums.

To me that letter didn't even sound like Chris. Perhaps, he had his serious face on when he wrote it. Idk. But it sounded more like some PR/Lawyer type of speak....

I think it would be a brilliant idea, a 'Never Forget' with a message from fans.
They would look at it everyday and can't just ignore it. B)

I think we've rubbed it in their faces enough at this point.

A week and a day until PAX, guys.

I don't think people are upset that they gave the cupcakes away, I think they feel like Bioware didn't really get the point (which I think was ment as I kind of playful dig, like we love you but your ending was bad)  and that is what is upsetiting them, but at this point it just good to let it go and move on to the next creative stunt.
