People are spinning this incorrectly to say we are not listening to "negative feedback" and how bad we are and etcetera.
Wrong.
We did listen. At no time did we try to stop Fuss for making the cupcakes or delivering them (this would be unfair to Fuss and to the fans who sent the cupcakes and a generally dickish thing to do). When the cupcakes reached us, we did not refuse to take them (again, unfair to the people who sent them). I, along with Fernando, Mark and Alistair went down, met with Shadow Wrought, gave him some swag for being brave enough to show up and keep us honest and took them upstairs. We took all of the included messages out of the bags and boxes so we would not lose them (again, cuz we're listening). We did not throw them away, ignore them till they got stale or not use them as what they are, food. We chose not to eat them and gave them to a needy charity.
The message REACHED us. Whether we ate the cupcakes, threw them in teh garbage or donated them to charity is secondary to us getting the message, right? If we had (somehow) frozen time, put them in a display case for all time as a reminder of the message sent by fans, this would have been the same thing.
Us actually eating the cupcakes or not should not have been the issue. The issue was fans creatively sent us a message expressing their love for Mass Effect as a franchise, but dislike over the endings. This message was delivered to us and we got it loud and clear.
Well, a lot of the mistaken interpretations had to do with how you worded your original response, which made it seem like only positive feedback would be funneled to the rest of the staff.
Whether or not that's true, that's how your first response made it sound.

I REAAAAAALLY hope that the irony of this outcome isn't lost on everyone.
I applaud needy kids getting cupcakes
(although honestly 408 cupcakes for 28 kids suggests they just used it as an excuse to deflect the reason for sending the cupcakes....I mean they could have distributed the cupcakes to more than one shelter if that was their true intent)
but I REALLY hope the irony of Bioware not choosing one of the three cupcakes which were representing the "endings" (ending) of ME3 and instead making their own choice because none of the choices presented to them were good doesn't go unnoticed by everyone, Bioware chief among the rest.
hmmm I wonder how this could relate to being given an ending that makes no sense, is full of plotholes, leaves no choice and ruins 5 years of gameplay?....Hmmmm lets ponder this.
Plus no matter what anyone says this part:
"The gesture certainly gained our attention both with its creativity and
deliciousness. However, while we do appreciate that fans were creative
in how they expressed their views, after a lot of discussion, we decided
ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context
of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team.
This is a subtle, but important aspect in determining how to pass the
feedback to the team. "
was completely unnecessary and basically boils down to "if you don't have anything nice to say or congratulations to give, then don't say anything"
This!

It's great that some poor kids get cupcakes, really.
Yet refusing the cupcakes in this way makes Bioware seem very small minded.
To react like this doesn't exactly lead to feelings of reconciliation between Bioware and Retake.
Seriously I want this all to end well, but I feel that Bioware is sending one wrong message after another.
Good way to deal with this? Graciously accept the cupcakes, let everyone at BW who wants to eat one do so and donate the rest to charity (even better if they donated something from their side as well).
Agreed. I wish they could have done that instead of completely sending them to charity. But, he has a point. They didn't ask the bakery to not make them, and they did accept them when presented at the door, and they kept all the notes...so, how many points do they get for that?

Little drastic, don't you think?
lol it totally is...but then we just finished sending them 400 cupcakes...
Taking out ad space is, in my opinion, a step in the wrong direction. I'm all for creativity, but people need to calm down on this thread. Good god, BioWare isn't evil and they ARE listening. The situation the cupcakes presented them with was unorthodox (in respect to a video game prostest, if it can be called that). People need to calm down and think before they post.
Indeed, part of Mr. priestly's answer seemed like it was saying "only good feedback please" but his last post clarifies that. And even if he didn't do us the courtesy of clarifying that, taking out ad space or doing things that are purely "offensive" (both in terms of being mean and offense vs defense) is not the right way to express our displeasure to the Bioware team.
They are people with feelings and dignity just like you and me, and we should always remember not to get carried away no matter how soul crushingly depressing and horrible the ending to ME3 was.
Also, as egregious as the ending to ME3 is right now, for the moment we should always remember that these are the people that brought us the 99.85% of the games that (generally speaking) we liked.
So until they announce at PAX what they are doing to address the ending issue, we should remain calmly firm yet respectful, and if PAX comes around, or if they release the "solution" and all we get is more PR speech or half-a**ed "solutions" then my suggestion would be just to not buy from them and move on.
At the end of the day your wallet is your vote, and buying or not buying is the simplest, most efficient and most dignified way to express your displeasure.
That's exactly why I havent bought the game yet. Between all the Origin stupidity, day one dlc already on disc, and the atrocious ending, there's no way I'm buying ME3 until I see a light at the end of the tunnel...

Okay long post incoming but I felt it needed to be said.
I understand why people feel like it is a slap in the face but the symbolism of the cupcakes I think was more important then them eating them. The retake movement needs to be careful here though, if the media sees people are complaining that the cupcakes went to less fortunate children instead of the Bioware employes the media will tear the movement apart even more so then they have done before.
If the media sees this they will generalize everyone involved in the movement and say that we are upset the cupcakes went to needy children and will use it as leverage against the movement as proof that we are all just entitled whiny fans that take games to seriously. I would hate for the movement to be all paint brushed like such given how much the movement has also given to charity out of there own free will just like Bioware has done today.
I am going to play devils advocate (don't eat me alive) but I myself think the endings need to be clarified but If it was me I wouldn't of ate the cupcakes either, It wouldn't feel right too because the overtone of the cupcakes are ultimately not celebratory. Its almost degrading to have years of work lowered down to three different frosted cupcakes, it simplifies the endings even more so though then they are.
However it is also a powerful message and a wake up call to Bioware that things need to be explained and modified for the fans. I bet the Mass Effect team isn't feeling very upbeat like you would normally feel if you received free cupcakes. In the end they kept the notes and have donated the sugary goods to a kids shelter I think its win win all around. Good PR for Bioware, the children get some sweets, and the retake movement cannot deny they have been heard.
Now we just need to wait till April, Its not that far away guys hang in there!
^This.
Guys, it's done with. It was a cool idea, the pics are great! The message is clear. Kids somewhere get to eat cupcakes, kids who probably don't have regular access to well made treats. It's win all around, so lets move on with grace, dignity and civility.
p.s. Also, I ♥ Eain.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Chris. My issue wasn't with whether or not you got the message or whether or not you ate the cupcakes, but with how you chose to motivate your deicsion to donate the cupcakes. It sounded as if you were giving them away because they were sent in criticism instead of praise, which would imply that you would have eaten them, had they been sent in praise. See how that can sound...well, disgruntling?
Thanks for hearing me out.

Honestly, this should have ended the thread. They got the message (although it seems they've already gotten the message a dozen times already), which was the whole purpose of cupcakegate. It was pretty clear once examining the situation that this was not the case and the conflict of interest and perception of the gift lead to the decision to to donate the cupcakes. Along with other factors I am sure but utlimately it all worked out for the best.
